Very Good Game
I had a CD of this game back in my childhood, and got some time of fun with it for sure. Now I'm back with it in 2026, for some reason... And I'd say - surprisingly - it's still a nice one for taking for a spin, maybe just for 15 min - maybe for a couple of hours! Still pretty much of a catchy thing, imho. Comparing it with newer truck simulators? Well, I'd say you shouldn't go for any comparison. "Across America" is too unique especially nowaday - so, I'm playing it alongside the other trucking games to get even more fun - and, of course, meet some new feelings because there's like nothing in common with driving games 20 years younger. Playing it on a decent gaming 2K/HDR monitor does help, bringing it some "bright colors" if you wish, pushing the graphics further than its native years, when the screens were way more simple. Oh, and - the game's a bit customizable with modding, I applied my own custom paintjob on my Ford LTL truck and modified its specs, and now I'm the happiest driver of 2003 😎
I bought this game so I can give my support to the devs who made a core memory in my childhood and leave a review. This review is based on how I remember playing it around year 2004 - 2006. I remember I was in elementary school, excited for the weekend to play 18 Wheels of Steel: Across America with my Logitech Momo steering wheel. I don't know how road rules worked before, so I remember driving on the center of a broken white lane; Getting to car accidents and trying to run away from cops that you can never outrun because they will always catch up to you and arrest you; Trying to buy brakes that you can't understand, I thought I bought the strongest brake but end up I bought a brake that was the lightest when you try to brake on a high speed, you just can't; Communicating with NPC trucks asking "how's the weather out there?" and being a happy when you meet one on the road because they honk a you. Overall, my experience was the best as it was one of my core memories in my childhood and would highly recommend this game in the past. Will I recommend this game in 2026? No, because you can play ATS and ETS2 with updated, modern features and graphics (Same devs as I recently found out). But if you want it in your Steam library collection and support the devs, then a big YES. To SCS Software, I'm happy for your success all these years. Thank you for the 18 Wheels of Steel: Across America, which became a core memory in my childhood. Wishing you guys more success on ATS and ETS2.
Not the best 18 wheels of steel game out of all the ones out there. Albeit being from 2003, it's a definite step back from the previous one. I tried setting it up right, tried to get it to run properly but it just ended up crashing minutes later.
