Sadly, as much as I want to like it I can't. The Linux version has terrible performance and it seems there's no plans to fix that. Unplayable.
This is a slight recommendation for the right person. I covered 1001st Hyper Tower when it released into early access. Now it's getting a full release and the base is still as solid as when I made the first video. Which is great! There's awesome stuff in this game. Yet, it's incredibly difficult and it's not going for everyone. The goal is to get to the top of the tower. But the tower is full of enemies and they are terrific at killing you. You need to play carefully because each room is deadly. Getting out in the open is worse, there are so many enemies! It's lethal, a shooting gallery and you're the target. Every time I get above a certain height, especially around the first boss, I find myself panicking from all the incoming fire. I actually don't mind and it's part of what makes this game so exciting. But, the game doesn't seem to want you to kill all those enemies. Ammo is scarce and the starting weapons are weak. It's one of my initial concerns from early access. So you need to find better weapons that are scattered throughout the tower. I'm enjoying the designs so far. Between shotguns and gasoline flamethrowers there are three different types of weapons each with their own ammo. It's awesome how the guns show exactly what kind of ammo they take by their design. The starting revolver has yellow bullets so it takes yellow ammo. I appreciate those small details. There are also upgrade points to collect which can be used at a workbench. You get to choose from four different upgrades and there's a large range. For example, one improves your aim and reloading speed when you're crouching. Although crouching isn't something I do in a firefight. Another one makes your kick do more damage to stunned enemies. I'm not even sure when the enemies are stunned. I don't find the upgrades make you that much more powerful. It's a pain you need to find the points THEN find the workbench. It happens too many times when I find a workbench before I have any points or I find a ton of points and miss the workbenches. Before I get too far I need to talk about kicking. Your leg was replaced in the tutorial and now you're a kicking machine. It's great! Shoot once then kick em can make your ammo last longer. So it's useful for conserving ammo when it's a one on one fight. Kicking is Less useful when enemies are going to shoot you in the back. My favorite is kicking enemies off the tower. Then I can save the most ammo by not shooting the enemies at all. Anyway, the tower is an organized mess. It feels new every run but during the run, I'll fall into familiar areas. Being able to learn the layout even though the tower seems like it's in shambles is impressive. I love how vertical the game is. You don't play many games where the level goes up without stairs. One thing to keep in mind is that the walls and floor can be destroyed either by explosion or enemy bullets. This means you can't hide indefinitely. It keeps the game frantic since you have to keep moving. Even with all the positives, 1001st Hyper Tower is going to have a difficult time finding its audience. The game is more difficult than it looks. There's little help and it's not clear how you're supposed to play. As I said, once you get to the first boss there are so many enemies out in the open with impeccable aim. My theory so far is that you need to sneak around the tower and try and take them all out. It's not my play style and I don't even think that strategy will work. You can't take pop shots at the boss since the walls are destructible. That means no hiding once the enemies know you're there. This is one confusing game and even after playing for a few hours I don't have a full grasp on what the developer wants. I'm not sure I ever will. Overall, I like all the pieces of 1001st Hyper Tower but together it's hard to recommend. There are only scraps of a story and with the high difficulty level, it's only for the most persistent gamers. I wasn't able to figure out how to get out of the first area. I'm close but too frustrated to continue. For people who do play, learning the game and working to get the top of the tower will be rewarding. Even the fairly early alpha version I was playing felt like a treat. It's a procedurally generated tower-climbing FPS that has a sufficiently high skill cap. While I haven't played any other such Roguelike-FPSs, the negatives I've heard people level at those don't seem to apply here, e.g. the A.I. is just fine and fighting varied enough. There are a LOT of weapons and enemies already, though the levels aren't hugely varied. High skill-cap if you want to challenge yourself. Not a lot of unfair deaths once you get used to a few things. I posted a lot of suggestions in the relevant thread for simpler and more complex improvements, and many have already been implemented. EDIT: I have to say the latest patch, with removing the ability to rebind controls (in an FPS!) has made it worse IMO. I can't get to the point of exploring what was improved otherwise, and whether or not the graphics update caused a performance drop, because the default controls are not to my liking.
I love gameplay mechanics, art style & atmosphere of this game. This game have a simple goals: kill enemies, upgrade your perks, defeat the boss and reach the top floor of each tower. So if you wanna to play a game with huge variations of random generated towers, this game will be grate for you. I recommend this game.
Guys, don't miss this diamond in the rough, 'cause this one is the NEXT BIG THING. I mean it - it has all the features that make it a great game for both Twitch streaming and YouTube show featuring, as well as being generally great: 1) It is a roguelite and it is done right. Even in EA it is not annoying but still features comparatively short action packed sessions with the rush and thrill of permadeath. 2) It is clearly as fun to watch as it is to play. Now, with a recent redesign it is even more fun than ever. 3) It may have a competetive factor in the future? Not sure. Grab it as soon you can. It is a great game already! Hope the Dev will see 1001st Hypertower promote itself very soon))))
Really the only description that does this game justice is that it's a Blendo game on coke
I'm playing Steam games in alphabetical order and you can watch my review here: https://youtu.be/fESLvLFRm5Y Prefer to read? This fast-paced roguelite FPS is pretty rough around the edges, but it nails the game design brief: Get cool guns, climb a tower, get upgrades, and kill bosses. It's pretty tough in the early game, thanks to the limited supplies, but once you get into the flow of the game, everything just connects and you're double jumping around the sides of buildings, kicking down doors and performing mid-air bullet-time no-scope sniper shots on enemies. The boss fights are a bit janky, but some of the most creative I've seen in a while, with an nod to Shadow of the Collosus, as you jump and climb your way around them to find their weak points. The sound design is lacklustre, the shortcut hub can't be accessed from the main menu, and some guns don't align their sights correctly, but if you just want to shoot some guys with cool guns and feel like a badass, this game does a pretty good job of it.
Still a bit raw, but it got a lot better since last time i checked. Everyone already pointed out pretty much all the good stuff about this game, but the most positive thing about this project is that the developer actually listens and cares about feedback players give. Usually every issue that somebody posts gets a response really quick and even couple of my suggestions made it into a game! This makes the dev a good dude in my book! Oh, and the game is fun. Buy it, play it, give it your love and attention it deserves!
Nice ideas in here, but it seems unfinished and fairly abandoned. If it is in fact finished, then I failed to play it right.
