ZENONIA 1 is a very faithful port of the game I remember playing on iOS and Android – which is not necessarily a good thing. I’ll keep it real with you: your enjoyment of this game is directly correlated with your nostalgia for the Zenonia series. Without those rose-tinted glasses, you have a very linear and very grindy adventure RPG with mediocre combat and an English translation that is poopoo-garbo. Any emotional impact that the story might have had is hampered by this dogwater translation,
Also, the gender machine is broken so everyone gets free he/him pronouns. Be sure to grab some on your way out.
I have some fondness for this franchise – with the third game being the only one that I’ve played all the way through and beat in Hard Mode. That fondness got me up to Ladon’s Illusion (~7-8 hours in) before my enjoyment backflipped off a cliff and I gave up. Funnily enough, this is also the exact same point where I gave up like 15 years ago. Mind you, that is with me making heavy use of the 2x and 3x game speed options. This game is just so unbelievably grindy. I am a fiend for the grind (I’m a Monster Hunter fan), but the grind boils down to me holding down A on the controller in a room and occasionally hitting RB so I can use a potion and not die. A part of me feels bad ragging on the game like this, because in the context of when it originally game out, it was pretty good. There were not a lot of fully-fledged adventure RPGs available on iOS and Android back in 2009-2012, and those that did exist generally shared a VERY similar gameplay philosophy to Zenonia. As a kid playing this on an iPad back in 2011, I held the series in pretty high regard. As a game re-released in 2026 for Steam, though, I think this game needed more than light polishing. There should have been more rebalancing and quality-of-life features added, like an XP gain modifier. Hell, 1-3 haven't been available to download from the App/Play Store in years. This should have been a bundle including Zenonia 1 through 3, but that's just me being a greedy bastard. As it stands, I can only really recommend this to fans of Zenonia looking for a nostalgic kick.

As someone who has now 100% completed this game, I've some thoughts on this game I loved to play back in my early teens on my phone. To begin with, I really do like this game, and definitely enjoyed my time playing this game overall. I still like the combat, the music, and the general look of the game as I did all those years ago. The Game Speed setting is a godsend and is easily the best modern feature of this release in my opinion. I'm super glad to see the series isn't forgotten and got a modern release. Unfortunately, steam works with a "Recommend" rating system, so as much as I personally liked the game, and while I do think this is a nostalgia-driven title that I can recommend to existing fans of the series, I don't think I can recommend it to a general audience in its current state. Time has moved on since the original release in 2009-2010, and some parts of this game - whether faithful to the original or not - make the experience more tedious than necessary.
Cutting the ride short
Firstly, I almost lost a 4-5 hour save because I encountered a 0HP soft lock bug. Thankfully, I discovered a workaround, and have made a steam guide to help anyone else suffering from it. I'm pretty surprised such a serious bug exist post-release, and this one has yet to be patched as of the date of this review.
"What am I supposed to do with this?"
The end-game weapon drops are completely daft: The highest levelled non-boss enemy in the final dungeon is 78, yet they strictly drop level 94-99 equipment! I can guarantee no player will be anywhere near that level when they reach this point of the game. The weapon, armour, and accessory drops from enemies in the majority of this dungeon will be completely unusable dead-space to players picking them up. This severely impedes the player's ability to continue grinding without leaving the dungeon, as the drops don't properly correspond to their level, meaning they can't replace the diminishing equipment they are using to grind in the first place with something stronger and more level-appropriate. The player is either forced to make do with whatever equipment they have on hand, or leave the dungeon to buy more suitable equipment and suffer making their way back through it to where they left. In most cases, what you take into this final dungeon is typically what you'll be using to fight the final boss.
The Grind
This could have been a whole lot worse of an issue if not for the Game Speed setting introduced in this release, so props to the team for including that. There are some crazy level spikes on enemies throughout the game which is roughly how how I remember the original being, but maybe because I'm older now I'm less tolerant of this level of grinding. It is expected that the player grinds for some time in this game before they can reasonably compete with the dungeons and their bosses, but this ranges between moderately fun to downright a chore depending on the class, weapon attributes (Holy ATK MVP), and skills (Meteor MVP) you have available (so it's very inconsistent). This is most notorious in the last dungeon:
the Valley of Despair
. Enemies are suddenly 10+ levels higher than you. Grinding is considerably harder for classes that don't have AoE skills that can kill multiple enemies in one go. Grinding past a certain level (I'd say around 82, depending on class) can be overkill for the final boss and lacks real purpose beyond it (no secret boss to fight nor achievements for reaching max level). With the limited EXP boost item and the Warrior class Meteor screen AoE skill, it took me a fair amount time just to get to level 80, and found levelling up had REALLY slowed down after that. Honestly I think the grinding wouldn't be as problematic if the limited EXP Boost item was less restricted. You can only afford about MAX 4 of them in one save if you've got Achievement Points equal to around 85% of the game's achievements, and because it's an in-game time-based consumable, the big AoE hitting classes like Warrior are going to get the most out of it versus limited range classes and skill attacks.
"...and all I got was this lousy mode"
The "Hard mode" that is offered to you after completing the game gives little to no context in-game about what it offers. I've learned in the Discord that besides enemies being "harder", rarer weapon drops are more common from enemies, which is probably only useful if you're pursuing the "Unknown Habits" achievement. Again, there's no achievement for completing Hard mode, so there's little incentive surrounding it beyond bragging rights. Players are also forced to start a Hard Mode New Game when trying to load your completed save data, and the original save slot will be overwritten completely with this Hard Mode New Game once the player saves in the New Game. As a result, your original save can no longer be accessed unless there's still an autosave slot of it before the final boss. This definitely needs to be conveyed to the player more clearly.
Side quests
I'm surprised there are no achievements for completing all side-quests. They definitely show more of the charm of the characters in the world, which is a plus, given the relatively light depth of the main story. The incentive to do the side quests is largely lost when you can complete a run without doing most of them in the first place, which I'm guilty of doing in my second run. Given that almost all of them are hunt/fetch quests, it does get rather repetitive.
Final Thoughts
This game definitely could use better difficulty and level scaling/balancing, another comb over with dialogue translation accuracy to tighten the story, and another round of bug squashing before I could recommend it to a more general audience. But for those that grew up with this game and it's quirks, you'll be pleased enough with what you play here - and I do sincerely hope that the rest of the series can see the light of day once more, just as this title has.
So I played this game for about 4 hours non-stop until the game suddenly froze discovering that there is no autosave, so i had to start over.. Well.. never again.
I remember playing this game on my iPod touch.....Man crazy how fast time has passed. So happy to find it again and play it on PC now (mostly steamdeck lol)
Love the game, such a great blast from the past. Don't bother playing it if you didn't play the original. There's just not much here once you pull off the nostalgia goggles. It starts off grindy as ♥♥♥♥, with you basically clawing for levels up until around 20. Without you realizing it in the background you begin scaling so insanely fast that you stop grinding all together. The difficulty curve then becomes weird. Fights become contests of who can one shot who first, you or the enemy. This typically then means if you don't have SP you're just sitting there with your thumb up your ass until you can use your skills again. And I mean, don't take my word on the balance. At the very end of the game like level 60-70 enemies all start dropping level 90 gear. As if the game assumed you'd have the patience to grind to that point, hell no. Save yourself the headache if you're here to relive your childhood. Get a memory editor, give yourself unlimited of the currency you spend at the Network Girl. Buy like 3 stacks of the instant revive and SP potion. Buy one stack of everything else, except for the item you can only use 10 times meaning any extra you have becomes undeletable garbage in your inventory. Aaaand beat the game in ~4 hours tops. Any longer and its going to overstay its welcome fast.
I love zenonia my first introduction was actually 4 and I loved it I tried to play the previous games but they where removed from the app store. now that the game on steam I can experience regret full story and hope the other games make it to steam too and i hope the positive reception of the port shows people still love this series and would love more games from it
Thank you for remastering this great franchaise. I will cry tears of joy, if Zenoinia 4 gets a remaster like this as well xD
It’s such a nostalgic game, and I love it. I hope Gamevil, now known as Com2us, can bring back the entire Zenonia series (Zenonia 1–5), along with the other series like Inotia 1–4. I know Inotia 4 already released on Steam in 2025 before, but it feels a bit “clunky” and not quite like it used to be imo, so hopefully they can fix it up. Looking forward to the upcoming series, especially Zenonia series. uWu ❤️ P.S. I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like some of the translations are a bit 'different' from how they used to be. I f the translations could be polished a little more, I'd be really glad!
