As both me and my co-op partner dig top-down shooters, we thought this one was worth trying for the cost of "free." Unfortunately, we didn't come away with a positive impression.
First off, as other reviewers have noted, the game is very dark. Often, I wouldn't even know that an enemy was near me until I began seeing the little white bite symbol over the top of my character, indicating that I'm already taking damage. On the flip side, this does increase pressure on the player to travel using the main roads, which are illuminated slightly better. It's interesting to feel this pressure through the gameplay, although I'm not entirely convinced that main roads would be safer than side paths in a zombie apocalypse.
We found the design of the city to be pretty lackluster, and felt that the procedural generation stripped it of personality. Although we killed the first three bosses, two of the three had the same subtitle (Taste Tester). It was a funny joke the first time...The bosses themselves run around wildly and stop in strange places and corners.
However, the biggest issue with the title is likely the pacing. With a lot of zombie-focused games, you'll have an involved defensive or offensive segment and then a slower-paced moment or two to "catch your breath." With [b]ZED Patrol[/b], it's just "all go, all the time." When we did die on our run, I think this pacing issue contributed to our reluctance to try another.
