A charming kinetic (there are no choices, you only read) visual novel about a boy that goes back to his hometown to visit his mother, and there he recovers an important memory, one which he thought he had lost. For the current price tag, this VN is totally worth getting: the art style is beautiful, BGM is good and relaxing, and there’s even voice acting (in Chinese). This title is also quite short, so if you want something “quick” to read, Your Smile Beyond Twilight can be a good call. I only have two complains: sometimes the text surpasses the text box, and it can get hard to read the last lines since they get mixed with the menu options. That might be a problem of the English version only, I don’t know. Speaking of it, the translation feels like it was done by two or three different people. Maybe I’m wrong, but it just feels like that. The game begins with a good and consistent narrative, and it suddenly changes; typos and awkward sentences appear and even tho I’m not a native speaker of English myself, I felt confused sometimes since a few sentences were very awkward and made little sense in English. Even so, I enjoyed this VN. It was short and still, I have this feeling that the devs put effort in it. 6/10. I hope that the developers will fix the English translation soon.
Quick thoughts with accompanying screenshots in Sinical Network
https://www.sinicalanimenetwork.com/post/your-smile-beyond-twilight-黄昏下的月台上-quick-thoughts Your Smile Beyond Twilight: 黄昏下的月台上 is Lingtan Studio's second visual novel in Steam. It is a slice of life drama with supernatural elements featuring a young male protagonist Yunshan who recently lost his job in the city and decided to return to his hometown Tangyin with his girlfriend Jingxuan to visit his mother. While paying a visit to his father's grave, a mysterious girl suddenly shows up, claiming to have waited for him for a long time. As a kinetic visual novel, there are no choices to be made, although the story is nice enough to keep my interest from start to finish. A volunteer translator fixed the English subtitles in 2017, and it is quite easy to obtain all Steam achievements with a published Steam community guide to help players with this part. The artwork and audio are also good, and the game comes with a free soundtrack DLC, leading me to write this quick thoughts blog post. With that said, I feel that the achievement that requires using up all 30 save slots is a little redundant as the game is rather short with no choices that can be made, and a few save slots would suffice as it takes about an hour and a half to read and listen to all the text and dialogue. The short length also means not enough time is spent to develop some characters properly. Overall, Your Smile Beyond Twilight is a short kinetic visual novel with nice music and well drawn artwork that I can recommend at any time despite a few minor complaints.
Pros
- Easy achievements - Good visuals and music - Reasonable price (comes with free soundtrack DLC)
Cons
- Rather short with no choices or routes - Underwhelming character development
Visual novel, JRPG, Anime Steam group - Join the group and consider following the group's curator list for more reviews or games with great/cute artwork
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/vnislife
Achievements events group - Join the group and consider following the group's curator list for more reviews or games with easy/reasonable achievements
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/GroupAchievements100
It's a great novel game. The story is beautiful, a little predictable at times, but captivating to the very end! The images are nice and for the price, it's worth it even if you only spend a few hours reading it. I recommend it! 💗
Be me loser who hates life, & doesn't show weakness. ..almost cries at the end of story. Short but boy are the feels real. Great art, & music as well. Good buy for $2. Perfect place to start if you are trying to get into VN's.
I either must be going crazy, or this girl is secretly a ninja. Forgetting people that used to be in your life is almost inevitable. It happens to games, cartoons, shows, or movies we used to love, but never got to get a physical copy, so it is just gone from the mind. Those same people most likely don’t remember you as well, and lingering on that is as depressing as remembering the people you thought would be in your life forever. Though...it can be awkward to come across someone that knows you, and you remember hanging around them, but just not their name. This is just what Yunshan, our protagonist, runs into as he visits his mother with his girlfriend, maybe soon-to-be wife, Jingxuan. During his visit, he encounters a girl that seemingly knows him and his family, but he doesn’t remember who she is. Soon enough, Yunshan goes on a task of remembering the girl he forgot along with Jingxuan. Good thing she’s fine with helping and Yunshan doesn’t have to hide his quest at least. This is one of those short, but sweet, kinetic novels that stayed just long enough to get the story across. And this story is a sad one, one which may or may not hit you but it is still the main purpose. For me it did hit me, and while the story is a little bit predictable, the author’s intent of emotion still soars. The translation is not bad as I don’t remember finding any mistakes through my playthrough. So if you heard this had a horrible translation before, be rest assured that it has been updated with a better one since. The voice acting is really something. Not like it is really great, but you don’t really see many Chinese games being translated and only having the original Chinese recording available. With this being the first game I heard Chinese acting in, the first part of the game does seem a little bit lacking. Once it gets into the emotional parts, however, it does pick up. It really is a shame considering by the time that happens, most will probably already turn down the voice volume. The art is really cute, and is really a shame that there wasn’t more put into having different expressions or poses. But I can’t really blame them as this was most likely made on a cheap budget. The music is simple, but does fit into the situation at hand. None negatively affects your enjoyment, but does set out to enhance the emotions that the game is trying to portray and succeeds.
Verdict
Your Smile Beyond Twilight is a kinetic novel that deals with lose. Something that we all deal with sometime in our life whether it be that one thing you lost so many years ago, or someone that you cared dearly for. The loss of memories certainly touch on this as well, especially when you think about the people you used to know and hang out with all the time in the past is barely remembered now. It really brings in the feelings that you never expected a cheap kinetic novel to bring.
This is a nice little story. It has a bit of a twist at the end, but it is beautiful. Now, the tale may be hard to comprehend at some points, as it appears this is a Chinese visual novel that has been translated into English, but still. Also, note that one of the achievements involves playing the game for two hours... and falling asleep during that period can vastly inflate your play time.
My friend gave me this game as a joke, "Haha cheap VN probs titties enjoy XDD" But in ended up a short and good story Almost cried tbh You can consider this a spoiler, but i'll say its
not that much of a "happy" ending (not a sad ending tho)
Can't get it into words, but its a good VN.
The chinese triggers me tho
