Yono and the Celestial Elephants
Sadly I can not recommend this game, at least for Keyboard players. The controls are frustrating and a bit jank and it just ruins any fun the game can bring. The game might be a lot of fun if used with a controller, but I do not have one to test this theory. Maybe someday I'll revisit the game with a controller.
buggy as hell elephant-based isometric puzzle-adventure. no mouse support in a pc game is a terrible first impression, further disappointments in the settings, available anytime. only master and music volumes, resolutions on an insta-change slider, can't check them all without changing anything, and rebinds are only possible by restarting the game while pressing shift to bring up the unity launcher. lazy. nice graphics and music and some really annoying audio (including the menu music), as one would expect from a cutesy game. typewriter effect for text display but at least it's mostly silent, 'only' annoying character-specific sfx (giggle, gasp, etc.) plays when a dialog starts, luckily not for every sentence. an instant text option and/or a speech slider would've solved this easily. a few typos here and there, not too bad. on the plus side, there's windowed mode, a few languages, a gui scale slider and an illustrated 'forward vector offset' setting. it's a fancy name for a must-have feature in isometric games, as pressing 'up' can mean whatever. no fall damage unless it's from really high but you can fall off levels and lose some hp very easily, including in towns (very much not a plus). the 3 options are -45, 0 (i.e. up is up) and 45 degrees. keyboard controls are terrible, shown during the tutorial and anytime in the pause menu. defaults are wasd/arrows to move and push things very slowly. faster would mean even more falling off but should still be an option. 'e' to interact and pick things up, only one thing at a time. carried items are thrown instead of gently used, unless you're standing next to something and manage to be facing the right direction. leads to unnecessary frustration and backtracking to the npc or place of origin if it lands in water or falls off the level. space for headbutt to break and attack things, ctrl for the trunk (blow air or gulp water, peanuts or peppers to use elsewhere while moving even slower) and also to back out of a menu, as esc won't do. shift is target lock and any key makes text appear instantly and skips to the next line, but repeat dialog can't be skipped with a single press and you won't know it's repeated until it's started. as a space elephant, you're tasked with helping people (and robots and dead people), sometimes without accepting or being offered a reward. no quest log/journal and some npcs not even acknowledging task completion is disappointing. there's a radio-bot reminding you what's going or should be going on, but it's only in the 3 cities, useless. combat is done by spamming headbutts and benny hilling, and it's not much fun with kb/m. no hp indicator on mobs either. it's really easy still, only boss fights are tricky. I hate them in most games anyway and this wasn't designed for them. the first has elephant-seeking fireballs and a slap attack that will most likely push you off the level. that's where I first died, respawned with the same amount of health outside the arena, or you can just reload, so not a huge deal. had to look up what to do in the second, the third clicked almost instantly. still died once, some dialog to skip before a retry, hate that, then suddenly my health bar was depleted, which apparently meant god mode, reloading didn't fix it either. glitches galore and there's way more below. manual saving (and loading) anytime, but only over a single slot, after an overwrite confirmation. autosaves whenever, no indication, but the load screen offers both with time stamps and even highlights the latest one. however, loading any save doesn't restore the carried item. I had to try to open a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ door in the sewers a bunch of times because the lock was next to water and the key, picked up from the other side of another map, with another area in-between, would fly so far off-screen if I wasn't facing the exact right way that I didn't even see where it landed in the water. interactible things (signs, etc.) aren't highlighted and picking up items plays an annoying trumpet sound. let's ignore realism, but if anywhere, it should happen when blowing. there's no map to bring up (only for the overworld in towns), so I would've liked to zoom out to see more of the surroundings. one of the dungeons is mostly dark, can only see immediately around you. terrible idea to begin with, especially considering all the issues with the game. fast travel between the 8 main locations is possible after visiting them. coins (only to buy skins) and hp refills can drop from enemies, vases, flowers and stuff and everything except enemies respawns if you leave and come back. health tokens are found in chests, exchange 4 at a vendor for a permanent hp upgrade. letters (as in, of the alphabet) also drop from breakables after you meet the loremaster in the second city. they restore 6 stories for extra insight into history and the only reason one would want to use fast travel to revisit a place instead of going forward. letter pickups are really buggy though. you get a lot every time, so it takes a while for the counter to settle, but whether it did or didn't, by the time I got to the library I often had far less than I did last time I checked, a few screens away. ♥♥♥♥ off. the story unlock animation is also glitchy, leaving characters on the pages that shouldn't be there. most puzzles and crates also reset when leaving an area, which might be necessary if you mess up sokobaning because there's no undo. but it'll happen anyway due to all the back and forth for fetch quests. there are situations where only reloading works, as the camera moves to highlight happenings elsewhere and you can't find the way out, or a pushable object blocks the entrance. once not even reloading fixed the camera, not in the current room, nor the previous one I went back to, after pushing a crate on a pressure plate for experimental purposes. restarting the game and loading the save did, otherwise I'd have had to reload an earlier save. it was near the end, the only puzzle that stumped me. inactive platforms are often activated by blowing fans/propellers, but sometimes they're out of reach unless you stand on the very edge. timing is involved in getting on and off and ones started manually eventually stop, adding a second layer of time pressure. at one point a platform bugged out in the middle of water, had to kill myself. another time, while holding movement keys, I remained mid-air multiple times until a platform came back under me. ice blocks get introduced in the second half for some hot sliding action, pretty basic stuff still. then dynamites, gotta dump them quick after pickup. again, making sure you're throwing in the right direction, to knock a key onto a platform and such, is harder than it should be due to abysmal controls. it's a cute little thing, takes 7-8 hours to do everything, but cute doesn't mean easy or for-kids, especially among puzzlers. most of it is simplistic enough but the writing (politics, death, philosophy), some mechanics and 'design decisions' and all the bugs beg to differ. shame about the painful platforming and positioning due to finicky controls, the questionable save system, and they managed to ♥♥♥♥ up the pong mini-game too. at one point the ball was stuck on the top, along with the audio. they could've made the whole thing less frustrating by not letting yono fall off edges, or at least not taking hp away for it. oh well.

Cute rather easy adventure/puzzle game! Completion time around 5h.
