Yonder World: Interview with the Void

Yonder World is a dark fantasy/psychological horror visual novel about a young angel (default name Vellus)—recently promoted to her first ever "real job"—accidentally getting transported to a dimension ruled over by an eldritch being named Dethiral. The game is also marketed as a romance (yuri/otome), but while it does have character-centric routes with romantic endings, I feel that the romance elements are very light throughout the vast majority of the game (the exceptions mostly being the endings). In particular, [spoiler]Dethiral's romantic route largely boils down to Vellus developing a crush on her that can't possibly be reciprocated. This makes sense with revelations you get about Dethiral's backstory but some players might be more disappointed to realize that it doesn't ever amount to anything.[/spoiler] The gameplay is a bit complex for a visual novel; choices increase and decrease each major character's friendship and romance, with fairly strict requirements for endings necessitating long-term stat management if you want to see everything. There's an official guide here on Steam, but it's honestly kind of confusing and I think one of the bad endings might be literally impossible to get. (The devs might already know this, because the achievement for getting all the bad ends goes off when you get all but one of them.) One of the major strengths of Yonder World is its art, especially the sprite art; it has a really nice semirealistic painterly style that works really well with the setting. There are also some really gorgeous CGs. The writing itself is generally very good, although the writer uses too much punctuation when it isn't needed to the point it's kind of distracting. Characters don't need to respond like this every time something surprises them!!! My main issue with Yonder World is how many questions it leaves unanswered by the time you've seen everything. [spoiler]It brings up a lot of stuff about Dethiral especially that never really gets addressed in any meaningful way. I wasn't bothered by the fact that she doesn't have a "proper" romance route since I felt that worked with the setting, but I was hoping for some kind of closure, which we don't really get even in her good endings.[/spoiler] It's a good visual novel with some really interesting ideas, but I'd recommend going into it expecting many of the major mysteries of the setting and characters, [spoiler]especially Dethiral[/spoiler], to stay mysteries.
