I think this was a great little game. It's free, all the achievements are obtainable, and it's fun. 10 hours of retro-gaming goodness. Yes, the game has the award winning Commodore-64 graphics that made 1983 such a banner year for gaming, but otherwise it's a fine game. Clearly made with love for 1980's style gaming, this is a game that doesn't waste your time with the stuff that no one reads anyway. Exploring the maps involves killing things. Message quests have you kill things. Collecting plants for alchemy works by killing things. Fight quests, oddly enough, work by having you kill things. Exploring caves and dungeons involve killing things. Buying items in shops probably involves killing unseen tailors off-screen. There's no fluff here, no NPCs wasting your time, no cut-scenes and no dialogue. You don't read any of that anyway, and this game knows why you're here and what you want. And most importantly, there's no retreat. Because you're locked into a combat once you start it, this game is as pulse-pounding and exciting as any 3D AAA game. Or at least Torchlight. Because you either prevail, or you see a tombstone appear on screen with the option to start again from your last time sleeping at an inn. The game is well-balanced both in the military and economic senses. For the latter, you will always be short of cash. You won't have all items bought until around level 38 out of 40. For the former, you will always find combat a challenge. Well, depending on what terrain you are in. The game has 9 terrains, in a hash-tag or tic/tac/toe sort of map, and they get progressively harder. Each terrain has a city, and equipment gets better and more expensive in each one. As is usual with this sort of game, fighting monsters gives you gold and experience. Your first fights will, for example, give you 6 gold. You will run back to the first city to heal for 5 gold. This will be the hardest part of the game, this first minute or so until you've saved up about 10 gold. Then you can buy stuff and the game opens up and never stops. And here's the important bit: I didn't get any of the achievements until level 26, so being that this game is free, you can try it out for a few minutes and some levels with no risk to either your bottom line or achievement count. For a free, fun game, this easily gets two thumbs up.

Despite the spartan look of Xploquest games, I like playing them. They are an entirely mechanical RPG experience, and while the fights are fast, the level advancement is leisurely paced. The challenge is how much do you push your luck of advancing? And the game gives some nice areas to explore, such as quest locations and ruins. Technically, I played this game on Ubuntu Linux 18.04, with radeon mesa drivers. It has a 11MB install size, and plays without fullscreen mode. Due to a GM2 game engine issue, the original game failed to start for a while, but the developer was extremely patient in forum responses. That ensured that Xploquest 2 went on my wishlist. I have not had any other issues with this sequel. I hope the developer adds some user-interface features, because it is tricky to get started. While sometimes there is a ? that provides help, most of the UI is not labelled. It would be helpful having a some tutorial pages, from the main menu. Also, it might be interesting to have beastiary information on the monsters, perhaps even to learn their weaknesses. Xploquest is a quick RPG for people looking to do some quick combat and levelling up. It has polished underlying mechanics, despite the shockingly simple graphics. It is not going to be for everybody, but I highly recommend it to people who enjoy board game experiences. (Update: the last fifth of the game really gets bogged-down, in the pace of gameplay. Each fight becomes a mess of mouseclicks. This later part of the game is an extension from the first Xploquest, and it did not get the same quality play-testing. Too bad, because that part of the game introduces a couple puzzle elements. The fight sequences are just a slog and they are not fun. However, I had 8+ hours of fun gameplay before I got to that later part of the game.)
Compared to the first Xploquest, there are definitely multiple QoL improvements in UI and game mechanics, but the mid game is such a grindy slog with so many repetitive and boring mouse-only actions caused by mismatched player-monster hp/damage and no available options to progress smoothly to the next stage. Terrible balance coupled with the lack of keyboard controls ruined it for me.
For those looking for a fine free RPG, Xploquest 2 will scratch that itch. Perhaps more of an early access prototype than a finished game, the stuff that it is lacking (such as dialogue in the quests) proves to ultimately be unnecessary to the actual RPG experience of getting more and more powerful. While without dialogue it may be unclear exactly what you are accomplishing, you nevertheless know you are accomplishing things: the map gets more and more explored, your inventory of weapons and alchemy ingredients grows, and you become more and more powerful. While you never know exactly what's going on, you will still feel like you are enjoying yourself, and ultimately that's what makes Xploquest 2 a great game.
I’d probably go with a mixed review if I could. It’s not terrible, but it was a little disappointing. I liked the original Xploquest better. Xploquest 2 is similar to the first game, but with a few added features. There’s still no plot or dialogue, but the world map is larger and exploring caves is not as simple as just fighting monsters. Well, it’s still mostly just fighting monsters, but the caves are a simple platformer. You might need to find the jumping spell first so that you can jump across a gap to fight the next monster. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t tell you about the jumping spell in advance, so I thought that there might have been some glitch. Fortunately, they kept the autosave feature from the first game. If you get killed by monsters, you can continue from the last point when you were at a city. Thumbs up for the automatic save feature. I know this is a minimalist game, but I did miss a few features. I think it would have been better if the enemy creatures had a visible health bar, so you could see how much damage you’re doing. Another useful feature would be a notice of how many points you need until the next experience level. Still, if you liked the first Xploquest, then this is worth taking a look at.
