This is perhaps the finest free RPG on Steam. I actually have no idea why it's free: I got 8 hours of content out of it, and there were no bugs or errors. All achievements work, and the game was fun to play. It is an RPG game in the tradition of 1980's RPG games: you play an unnamed character who exists to fight bad guys. 10 or so battles gets you enough experience to level 2, then 20 or so battles gets you to level 3, and so on. Each level gives you ten extra hit points, an attack point and some spell points. Killing monsters earns you experience and gold. You spend this gold in towns where you can buy weapons, armor, potions and spells. There is an overland map which you can explore in segments: you have an exploration skill, and you need to increase that to explore the entire map. For example, you start off able to explore plains and grassland, then with a level up in the exploration skill you can explore forests, and then another level up swamps and marshes, and then another level mountains. However, each square on the map has a perennial mob on it, and if you explore before you have sufficient strength you will be squashed like a woolly mammoth and find yourself just as extinct. (There are other skills, such as fighting, bargaining, spell-casting, and so on, and they do what you'd expect.) In addition to the overland map, you can also explore caves and dungeons. Caves are easier to explore than dungeons: they are a single level each, and I completed them all by Level 22. Dungeons are 10 levels each, and I think I was around level 28 or 29 by time I went through all of them. Finally, there is the dark tower of the evil overlord (or maybe it's just some guy named Morton; the game doesn't really bother with trivial things like motivation, explanation, or names. Most of you never read them anyway.) This is 10 levels of demons. Level 30 is sufficient for this tower so long as you have a handful of healing potions and spells. The game also has an extensive and elaborate quest system, which appears to be proceduraly generated. Or at least randomly generated, but either way, it works fine. There are travel quests which ask you to go to a city, and there are combat quests which ask you to go somewhere and kill something. A good way of generating cash and experience quickly. The economy is well-balanced. You will be short of money in the beginning, have just enough for most of the game, and only have excess the last 2 or 3 levels once you've bought everything. Which is odd: I wouldn't think that someone who put all this work into this game and then set it out for free on Steam really understands how to make money. This game is certainly the equal of any 49 or 99 cents game on Steam. Two thumbs up! This is well worth playing, especially as it's free.

This was a fun little game, and it's free. There's no story, you just explore, do simple tasks and fight. As your character gets stronger you can more safely explore other areas. The "auto-fight" button is nice especially later in the game. I did find myself wishing I could use the arrow keys to move instead of always clicking, but is a minor thing.
Best retro RPG game for the price!
Not bad for a free game. This is a casual RPG game without any fancy bells and whistles such as plot or dialogue. It’s slightly more than just a clicker, but it’s still a rather simple game. The game is pretty much just moving to different squares on the map and fighting the monsters that are there. There are a few cities where you can rest and buy supplies, but there’s not much else you can do. Soon it’s back to the map where you just move to different squares and fight monsters again. One big plus is that when you go to a city, your game is saved automatically. If you get killed by monsters, you can continue from the last point when you were at a city. Thumbs up for the automatic save feature.
Finished the game's content in about 3 hours and grinded out to level 30 doing quests. I had a lot fun for a free game. I wish I could walk around with arrow keys and combat went by a bit faster, but those are little nitpicks. A lot of fun, highly recommended for when you're bored and got a few hours to kill.
Xploquest is a free to play retro/classical western RPG game not too different from primitive RPGs made in the late 1980s. Gameplay consists of exploring an open world map, fighting monsters, "exploring" dungeons, going up levels, going back to town and buying equipment and potions and so on. There's a lot of depth for such a small indie game. It's great to see indie developers thinking beyond "I'll just use a construction kit template for a retro 2D pixel platformer". The complexity as a genuine RPG is welcome. Unfortunately there are some issues with both the technical implementation and the overall game. While some parts of the game have reasonable depth (spells, inventory management, rations, resting at inns and so on), other parts don't. "Dungeons" aren't really dungeons you explore, they are just a set of 10 fights in a row, on a single screen. Combat is just a matter of clicking on the enemy and having the computer smash down the hit/miss/damage so fast you have to look at your hitpoints to see what happened the last round. There's little to no strategy apart from working out when to huff a healing potion. The retro pixel 2D graphics are lacklustre and feel like they're just placeholders or "it'll do" attempts. There's no widescreen support, the game only displays in 4:3 aspect ratio. While there is a fullscreen mode if you alt+enter, resolution and controls are locked, that's beneath minimum acceptable standards for PC. Games don't exist in a vacuum. While this is free, and I'll talk about that next, games like Skyrim and Baldur's Gate can be had routinely on sale for less than $10, hardly breaking the bank. Skyrim even has 3D graphics. The game is completely free. Nothing speaks more to a developers belief in themselves and their product than making their game available for everyone without remuneration. This is certainly a gesture that shows dedication to the gaming industry. It's a shame in this case that the implementation is below the minimum standards a dedicated PC game should offer to enthusiasts. There's no "maybe" option in Steam, unfortunately, but I hope to see more work from this developer, perhaps as part of a professional game development company that can make full use of their talents without needing to make budget/quality compromises.
