The worst tutorializing I've ever seen in a game. None of the mechanics are adequately explained, and your entire playthrough dies if you act on limited information. Did you know that Kinetic Strike deals self damage and only attacks on non-diagonal adjacents? No? Guess your campaign ends. Basically unplayable.
The game is extremely buggy, it constantly freezes, crashes, or softlocks, and the gameplay is incredibly frustrating. The challenge of XCOM is managing risk. Hedging your bets, and making sure the infamous "Missed 99% shot" doesn't result in a game over. In practice, this doesn't matter, because the REAL challenge is how well you can game the enemy "pod" activation. Enemies don't do anything until they enter your line of sight, so instead of trying to keep eyes on all the important chokepoints or get a clear view of things for your sniper, you want to instead make yourself as blind as humanly possible to mitigate the chance of activating multiple pods. If you get dogpiled, you are probably going to wipe. So gouge out your eyes and minimize the amount of map you can actually see. The gameplay itself is also extremely jank. Entire sections of wall can be removed by a missed pistol shot, leaving you exposed to instant death from a flanking attack. Overwatch sometimes just doesn't work. Getting wiped because my sniper refused to take a pistol overwatch shot against a 1 health chrysallid coming around the corner is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I put them there to handle that exact thing from happening. The glitches and jank decided my strategizing meant nothing. If you're playing EW, be aware that throwing a battle scanner and revealing a pod of seekers before activating them with your troops will result in a softlock. The ability I explicitly took to deal with seekers actually just makes the game literally unplayable. INCREDIBLE. Nothing I do matters because the game is a janky, glitch filled mess and no amount of risk management or strategizing or positioning will ever fix that. And then there's the freezing. If I let the game finish the cutscene for the skyranger landing back at base, the game freezes my computer. I have verified file integrity, uninstalled and reinstalled the game, updated my drivers, and every other thing I could think of and it still happens. Overall, while the game is fun when it isn't bugging out, its almost never not bugging out. Because of this, I cannot recommend this game.
i played this to death on the xbox 360. love this game and recommend it to anyone who likes tactical RPGs like fire emblem
It's okay if you hate me XCOM, I hate you too
My 3rd-year University project drew heavy inspiration from the XCOM series, but, up until recently, I'd only ever touched the game to check how the grid system worked. Now that I'm finished with University, with a 2:1 (yippee!), I thought it'd be nice to actually give the game a shot. Despite working on a TBS/RTS for over a year straight, I'm historically not their biggest fan. My only true exposure to them is Halo Wars. This meant I had a huge learning curve ahead of me, but again, I was willing to give it a shot. And I'm glad I stuck with it! As expected, the learning curve was steep. Managing even a small number of units proved a challenge. Dealing with the horrible RNG system was an even bigger one. But after a few missions, a few deaths, I started to get the hang of it. That's when I finally began to understand why people spend 100s, even 1000s, of hours in this genre. It's addictive. I didn't do everything there was to do, but I did reach the end, and considering how tough a time I was having at the start, I'm proud of that.
Steam is demanding that I review this fourteen year old game. Alright, here's my review. XCOM Enemy Unknown and it's DLC Enemy Within AREN'T even close to the original X-COM. However, if you do buy it and want to get close to the original, install the Long War mod. Also, don't bother with the multi-player aspect, it was a waste of time even when the game was new and it's no-longer working at this point anyway. Now, to break it down. If you want it, buy it on sale if it's sub $5.00 or even $2.50. Install the Long War mod. It'll be about as close as you can get to the original X-COM. As to the DLC's, you can usually get the complete pack on sale.
Si te van los juegos de estrategia por turnos y un poco de administración de recursos, es una locura. Si sos choto como yo, te van a limpiar todo el equipo en un turno.
