pretty good but needs more planes

X-Plane is a fascinating flight simulator, not perfect and with it's shortcomings, but there is some cool stuff in there, and I am hooked. I've also owned MSFS 2020 for years so can compare the two. MSFS 2024, I refuse to buy or participate in. Here are my observations of Xplane-12 : Whilst it runs beautifully on some Linux distros (the zippy Cachy OS or polished Fedora 43, for example) the Linux version does not have joystick presets for some bizarre reason, and don't even try and get Autortho or XP Map Enhancement to work on Linux, they don't! After wasting hours of my life on Linux, in one last ditch effort I decided to do a fresh install of Windows 11 (Windows reset does not cut it!) and low and behold, the performance levels are now on par with my Linux experience without all the headache that Linux brings. So, yes I would strongly suggest you do a fresh install of Windows prior to using X-Plane 12. MSFS have plenty more free quality aircraft available online, where as with X-Plane 12 there is the odd one or two free aircraft that are excellent, but after that payware aircraft is extremely expensive! Possibly because this sim attracts real pilots and serious enthusiasts they are able to do this. Shame as it sure does alienate simple enthusiasts like myself, who want to get more involved, but don't like the idea of being completely ripped off. Sorry I don't have £80 spare to buy an aircraft. The legendary A320 Fenix for MSFS is only £50 which is considerably more reasonable. There is nothing comparable for Xplane-12. Finally, X-plane 12 cannot compete with the level of accuracy and detail of MSFS scenery. Yes you can use Simheaven, XP Map Enhancement, Autoortho to improve things, but it is still no contest. Xplane 12 does VR better than MSFS in my opinion though! Where Xplane-12 shines is in its flight dynamics which I experienced right away. The aircraft feel different than in MSFS and all the little realistic details add up to make it a more alive and immersive sim, in my opinion. This is why for now, I am fascinated with this simulator, and have not touched MSFS since.
