"Wonder Ball" is, believe it or not, quite a bit far away from being one of the worst games on Steam. That might seem like high praise, but we have to remember ever since Steam Direct happened, Steam is full of junk. Being pretty tall for a midget earns no awards. And, weirdly, this was made by an actual developer from what I can tell, because a few things are done... okayish. Like you get custom settings and the game isn't a completely bug riddled disaster. This game "works" insofar as you can play it... but here we reach the first of the problems... there's not much reason to want to. What do you do in the game? Aimless 3D rolling ball platforming (looks like it's straight off a game template) and a little rolling around and shooting lightning at some robots for whatever reason. Collecting boxes, too. Why? Nobody cares. The game is really simple and unambitious in terms of implementation, more of a tech demo or one of those cases where an amateur developer spends $100 to publish something on Steam Direct to see if it's possible. Yes, obviously it's possible. A proof of concept, tech demo, or something that's less than a little blip on the radar isn't offering anything truly valuable to gamers. In terms of visuals, this features fairly low quality low poly 3D graphics which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and while some developers struggle with creating high quality visuals, failing to do so is a disservice to gamers. It's very difficult to recommend bad looking games. I'm not sure if this is an asset flip, but it's one of those cases where the assets just look much better than the rest of the quality of the game... a glaring inconsistency. There's no evidence, but as always, the biggest problem with asset flips besides the plagiarism is the deplorably low quality/ambition/content of the other aspects of the game, and even if the game assets are genuinely created for the game, the quality of the rest of the game is indistinguishable from that of asset flips. If this is not an asset flip, the developer would likely have spent about 90% of the time creating all the game assets... as usual it doesn't make a lot of sense, does it, to see high quality (well, average quality) game assets being created for not much purpose at all than to appear once in the background of a really basic rolling ball platformer. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging an eye watering $15 USD for this. If you have $15 kicking around that you just want to burn, don't buy games like this, give it to a charity or spend it wisely on drugs and alcohol. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at [b]only 13 concurrent players[/b]... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Given that this free title won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? This is a "nope". While it won't necessarily cost you money, the time and hard drive space it requires could be better invested in one of the many higher-quality alternatives on Steam.
