WITCH-BOT MEGLILO, developed by ASTRO PORT and published by Henteko Doujin, is a high-energy 2D vertical shoot ’em up that blends classic arcade sensibilities with eccentric sci-fi flair and anime-inspired character design. At first glance, it embraces the familiar structure of traditional bullet hell shooters: waves of enemies flood the screen, projectiles form intricate patterns, and reflexes are tested to their limits. However, beneath that familiar foundation lies a distinctive mobility mechanic and a playful narrative tone that help it stand apart from more conventional entries in the genre. You take control of Meglilo, a magical-girl-turned-cybernetic-warrior who faces off against the eccentric Gogoh Army and their over-the-top commanders. The story unfolds through short, comedic cutscenes that add personality without interrupting the pace for too long. While the narrative is intentionally absurd and lighthearted, it provides context for the escalating battles and gives the game a unique identity. Rather than presenting a solemn sci-fi epic, WITCH-BOT MEGLILO leans into campy humor and exaggerated character interactions, reinforcing its energetic, arcade-style presentation. The most defining gameplay feature is Meglilo’s time-stop warp ability. At the press of a button, time briefly freezes and allows her to teleport instantly to another location on the screen. This mechanic transforms the traditional bullet-dodging formula by adding a layer of strategic repositioning. Instead of relying solely on weaving through bullet patterns, players can escape seemingly impossible situations by carefully managing their warp gauge. Because the ability consumes a limited resource that refills gradually, it cannot be used recklessly. Effective play requires balancing conventional movement with tactical teleports, creating a rhythm that feels both reactive and deliberate. Weapon customization further deepens the experience. Meglilo is accompanied by configurable support satellites mounted on her left and right sides. These satellites can be equipped with different attack types—ranging from focused laser beams to spread shots and close-range drills—allowing players to tailor their offensive strategy. The combination of left and right loadouts significantly influences how you approach each stage. Some setups favor aggressive close-quarters combat, while others emphasize safe, long-range precision. Experimenting with these combinations adds replay value and encourages players to find a playstyle that complements their reflexes and preferences. Visually, the game embraces colorful pixel art and vibrant bullet patterns that evoke the spirit of classic arcade shooters. Enemy designs are varied and expressive, with bosses occupying large portions of the screen and unleashing dense projectile sequences. Backgrounds shift across stages to reflect changing environments, maintaining visual variety despite the relatively compact campaign length. The soundtrack complements the action with fast-paced, synth-driven tracks that heighten intensity during major encounters. The overall presentation strikes a balance between retro homage and modern indie polish, delivering clarity even during chaotic firefights. Difficulty scaling is handled through multiple modes, making the game accessible to both newcomers and seasoned shoot ’em up veterans. Lower difficulty levels allow players to enjoy the mechanics and story without overwhelming bullet density, while higher settings significantly increase projectile complexity and enemy aggression. On tougher modes, boss patterns demand memorization, precision timing, and efficient use of the warp mechanic. This scalability ensures that the game can function both as an entry-level bullet hell and as a genuine challenge for experienced players seeking mastery. Despite its strengths, WITCH-BOT MEGLILO remains a relatively concise experience. The campaign does not span a large number of stages, and players seeking extensive narrative depth may find the story segments brief. However, its arcade-oriented design emphasizes replayability through score chasing, difficulty variation, and loadout experimentation rather than length. The focus is clearly on refining performance and achieving higher scores rather than on prolonged storytelling. Ultimately, WITCH-BOT MEGLILO stands out as a compact yet inventive shoot ’em up that refreshes traditional bullet hell gameplay with its time-stop teleportation mechanic and customizable weapon system. Its vibrant presentation, energetic pacing, and tongue-in-cheek narrative give it a memorable personality within the genre. For fans of classic arcade shooters who appreciate tight controls and strategic mobility, it offers a focused and replayable experience that rewards both reflexes and tactical thinking. Rating: 8/10
I love Astro Port! Their games are filled with wonderful details and are just a lot of fun to play. This one is no exception. It‘s great to have a developer who focuses ob stgs rather than bullet hells. Don‘t get me wrong, I love Mushihimesama (20+ hours of gameplay) but these days more or less everybody is doing bullet hell. Astro Port are more old school about their levels and the various difficulty levels offer something for every experience level. Great job again! Astro Port rocks!
The story made me laugh a lot, I loved the presentation and the character designs. The sprites are amazing, the level design is super creative and fun, the teleport keeps things from being too overwhelming and isn't forced too often. Play this game it's good. NOTE: for some reason, clicking anywhere will skip things like cutscenes. Don't skip the cutscenes, wait and see what happens
Fun off-colour humour, and fun and addictive gameplay. Has enough challenge for someone familiar to bullet hells, but easy enough for someone who's new to them.
Don't hit the escape key on the last level because you had to scratch an itch...
The art of a shmup. Artistic because of enemy bullet patterns, animations, and music. Many inexperienced shmup makers who want to develop a bullet hell, you are on notice. I will buy your game, and rip it to shreds. Follow this outline, and you'll see a glowing review.
Let's just wait and see what happens.
