The world was long ago split in two by the sudden collapse of an advanced civilization and the destruction of the ancient and powerful core mechanism that reigned over it it.
GRAVEYARD
A band of those who have great stake in the remains, studiers of the various surviving artifacts of the lost civilization.
Each member's fate was once connected to the remains in some way.
EXECUTORS
Watchers that live only in obsession. An obsession to sever the fate they are bonded by.
Agents who exist as "Those who must go to the place they are meant to go".
The ceaseless echos of a severed past.
Their devotion is a torch that renders through the darkness and guides them toward their final duty.
The ruins to which they are all bound to by fate...have yet again appeared on the surface world.
DEAD LIAR
The longest living member of the Graveyard survivors.
Standard.Specializes in cooperative tactics with his Misteltoe, Tobari-Maru.
His narrow range of attack makes him enviable to delicate and precise operations,
But he packs an equally worthy level of firepower.
FOSSIL MAIDEN
A female of great latent ability, but whose blindness and poor physical health make her reliant on the support of her Misteltoe.
Effective mainly at subjugating spaces with her wide area of attack, she is also capable of highly powerful single shot attacks.
MINOGAME
An androgynous android deity created by a mysterious religious organization long ago.
Their main shot is rather simple , but their innate defensive capabilities and wide AOE attack excel at handling large numbers of targets.
Utilize a plethora of unique skills to attack and maneuver through long intense stages!
How you chose to master each character's strengths and weaknesses will be the key to victory.
Whether you take your enemies head on, play it slow and steady, or hit them with precision from a distance...Each play style possesses inherent merits, and inherent faults.
Adaptive on-the-fly strategy and an awareness of your position and targets will also be critical to success.
8+ stages that change in form and intensity in real time as you progress.

You can stop browsing the Steam store—You found it. This is the game you've been looking for, the one to remind you why you play games in the first place. An STG where memorization takes a back seat, focusing instead on the here and now. Your attention will be firmly gripped, adrenaline blasting you into the present moment and holding you there until eventually your mind can no longer keep up, and you break. But you'll come back stronger. You'll hone your focus, best your record, and the exhiliration is unmatched. Soon, the game will defeat you again, and the cycle repeats, each run forcing you to go deeper inside yourself. Until finally, you break through. It will demand your patience, dedication, focus, attention, and willpower. It will train each of them to be better, delivering an experience that exceeds other STGs to rival meditation. It doesn't matter how many CAVE shooters you've 1cc'd, lunatic Touhou clears you've done, or Konami highscores you hold. Hellsinker will make you stronger. Don't miss it. Keep your dignity. Beginner tips: * You are going to be confused when you start playing, and that's normal. In the launcher, there's a button labelled "Open instruction folder" (mirrored here). Read it. You might not understand all of it, but you'll learn. * 730's beginner guide on the community hub is absolutely worth reading and will make the game accessible way faster. A lot of this stuff took us years to reason about back in the day, so it's a real boon (thank you 730). * There is a new launcher that solves a number of technical problems other negative reviews have. * If you have resolution woes, in the launcher go "Info augmentation" -> check "window maximize". * If you are on KDE and the borderless window isn't centered correctly, you can drag it with Meta+Left Click. * Unlike traditional STGs, in Hellsinker your bomb requires an offensive resource (SOL) and is a high powered attack in itself. Most defensive maneuvers in Hellsinker are good, but come with a catch. * The BGM is great. If you get tired of the in-game BGM, I often play to Enrico Sangiuliano's fantastic album Biomorph. It just hits right. * I think the "Display backgrounds as wireframe" option is nice but I wouldn't start with it on. * Note: My Steam hour count is wildly inaccurate as I've been playing on/off since the C72 release. I only recently switched to this version (proton & cloud saving are so good, and the game works surprisingly nicely on steam deck). It's the type of game you can come back to for years and still enjoy.
You're going to bounce off of this like it's a brick wall at first. This game is initially so obtuse and vague about even the simplest of things such as what basic game settings even mean, much less parsing the visual noise and figuring out what you should even be focusing on or doing. You'll need a tutorial for the tutorial and the manual will make you forget the words you're reading are English. And yet, at it's core, Hellsinker is genuinely not that complicated. Once you can parse through all the noise and figure out what the game actually wants you to do and how to interact with it, everything clicks like magic. I never understood people who said it took them a while to "get" Dark Souls, but when you GET Hellsinker it feels like waking up from the Matrix. Next thing you know, you're having DBZ Beam Clashes with the de-limbed torso of a mechanical hydra or taking out battlecruisers so massive they extend the length of the whole level. 'Hellsinker' is not a game, its the feeling you get when you're trying to figure out how to dodge an endless barrage of homing missiles before realizing that you were never supposed to dodge them but rather crush each and every one of them with your bare hands before they can even hit you. It's realizing that the Shrine of Farewell isn't your per-playthrough dose of humiliation as you get repeatedly kicked in the balls by the creator's old RP OCs, but rather a place to be bold and risky and stress test yourself with no consequences and more extra lives to gain the more you can impress your godlike tormentors. It's recognizing those projectiles from the tutorial as the kind you can break with your normal shot and therefore the only way out is through. Peam.
Edit: and there it is! a clown award lol I see many clown awards given to negative reviews for this game, which shows it has a diehard fanbase who refuse to see the product from a neutral standpoint, so I will just write what to expect upon purchase; Right out of the box, you will get a launch window which gives you numerous options to tinker with before jumping into the game. Some of these are self explanatory, while some are technical graphic options like Anti Alias types, resolution options (which you need to change property settings in windows to even show as an option), a lot of unexplained check boxes, then a tab to show or turn off ingame details which are not explained again, and will need to refer to external resources to find out what they do (and even then not everything is clear). I have wrote all this to say, expect to tinker and experiment for however long it takes before actually getting to play the game. This was the first barrier of entry. Then you run the game and find the ingame UI is quite challenging to read, specifically the font used; V looks like a L for some reason, and many of the font are challenging to read. On top of this, the game has decided to create and use Jargons for common terms, further creating confusion which further adds layers of 'strange' factor due to the Engrish vocab used as jargon + Engrish explanations to define those jargon. The game really takes you for a ride as it provides ingame manual of sorts, with background story cryptic as your ex girlfriend's logic only further embracing confusion as English translations are as Engrish as they come. I will not mention much about the gameplay itself, other than seeing many people saying tutorial was too hard, and it is (10.2% achievement); During my 2 hour gameplay time, I was able to clear the tutorial and was surprised to see it gave several steam achievements for doing so. It took several tries but it was definitely doable. This is not why I gave this game a thumbs down however. The reason for not recommended is because 1. It has a barrier of entry even prior to playing the game (tinkering and research for simplest things like better resolution + fullscreen/reading material which you would need to come back to, to fully grasp) 2. The quality (translation) of that same reading material is @$$ due to jargon used (if you could even call it that) and Engrish description to explain what those jargon meant 3. UI choice probably is deliberate but is still another barrier of entry. 4. Despite the game description saying there is an online leaderboard the only one I could find was a local one. If you can deal with all of the above, and still have patience left to delve into the gameplay and its mechanics, you probably should be doing something other than playing videogames but for most I think a refund would suffice.
weird little christobuddhist fighting game that sticks in your mind
Hellsinker is a very unorthodox video game. Enough so that those who have bounced from it may believe it is entirely nonsensical, malicious and misdirecting, contrived and pretentious. Hellsinker is none of those things. The proof lies in the message delivered to you, before you may even begin to learn how to play, and in the bookends that follow.
I don't know your infernal days. However, there is no cause for concern 'cause I'm always next to you. So, your pain is mine. Keep your dignity.
Whether I'm being too parasocial, misinterpretative, or too appreciative of these words, I will still believe that this mere passage is the voice of a humanity that has only barely been captured by other games, and is the bed of what the labyrinth of Hellsinker's true nature is about. As a game, Hellsinker is about growth and confidence that can be easily seen. As a narrative, a descent into something bigger yet smaller than yourself. As a story, about returning to the root for a thing left behind. Those words may stay with me forever, something for me to think about even after the dark days of my life are finally behind me. May my dignity be kept. Criticism: Hellsinker's current build suffers from dated Delphi technology and DX9 libraries causing graphical/launch problems for some. Some defaults should be rearranged. Unused content should have been used. SEGMENT 8's boss could have had some more engaging execution. Despite all of this, the biggest downside to playing Hellsinker is that I will never be able to forget and re-experience the game all over again to re-live the sessions of unfamiliarity and moments when things suddenly clicked. I hope to decompile this game one day. Hellsinker is a masterpiece. 9.5/10.
I've barely scratched the surface myself since I haven't played Hellsinker in over a decade, but its by far one of my favorites for the sheer complexity of its systems and how this diverges between how every character plays. Like if I were to describe everything mechanically I'd probably be submitting an essay instead of a review. Hellsinker is probably the definition of obtuse and downright psychotic at face value, hell I found the tutorial more difficult than stage 4 somehow lol, but its a game that really gives you the tools, settings, and practice you need to full understand its complexities to truly appreciate how everything wraps together. The main thing you may find insanely jarring about this game is its UI and font choices, but there's so many tutorials in game as well as online that you'll definitely gain a grasp of what everything means/represents. I might be terrible at it, but its a favorite despite it all. Once it clicks it really clicks it barely feels like a shmup at all and more of a combo meter management game. Should be mentioned as well, this is a decently complex game, if you're completely inexperienced at shmups I would hold off on making this a first. The Death is waiting for You. Please don't bore Him.
might be the best game ever made
