I've been watching a lot of Electric Underground's videos lately and it got me interested in trying shmups a bit more seriously, so i returned to this one i remembered liking with the goal of completing it in normal mode. After 9 hours i completed my first 1CC in the genre and i have to say i really enjoyed the whole experience, optimizing the pickups, getting a higher score to obtain extra lives, completing the levels without getting hit, seeing my performance get better every time, it's fun and it feels good. I plan to beat it in hard mode next.
Third game developed under the Astro Port banner but only seventh to reach Steam, Meglilo has the most bizarre premise out of their games: a spin-off of Vulkaiser where a magical girl, killed while defending the mecha's inventor, is rebuilt by him into a cyborg who fights the Gogoh Army at the same time as Vulkaiser, with a strong dose of dark, cynical humour - see the recurring gag of "Let's wait and see what happens". She even fights a copycat at some point like Vulkaiser did. When a boss fight happens she summons a "Marchen Dimension" that begs many questions about what type of magical kingdom she hails from. The following AP game, ostensibly set in the very same universe thirty or so years later, is Gigantic Army... In a gimmick I haven't seen in many shmups to my memory, the heroine has no bombs or other special attacks but rather a warp system that, upon use, stops the action and allows to move instantly where indicated, getting safely out of obstacles and bullet barrages that would otherwise be impossible to avoid. It can't be used indefinitely and recharges faster while not shooting, which can get quite difficult at times as enemies may come even in large swarms; learning to confront as much danger as possible without warping is essential. Due to this gameplay that may force fighting into tight spaces, it's no surprise that collectible weapons are mostly focused on covering the sides. The graphics are colorful but look even amateurish at times; given that AP had already made Armed Seven at this point, however, it's clear it's a stylistic choice. A run of all six levels can be done in 20 minutes but once all lives are lost, there is no continuing; given how combative the final boss can get, it may not be easy to see the end even on Easy. Not one of the developer's best but still a fine little title, with some lack of refinements forgivable given it's one of their earliest. To my surprise but really not much, I found out that Meglilo originates from one of the early Dezaemon productions by the developers. The title tune is similar, the premise of the little witch turned cyborg too, but the enemies... well, look for yourself! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PuuopE7QpM
It's a very fun game. A solid shmup, nothing very innovative besides the teleport mechanic, but it's fun and does everything well enough. My only complaint is that there's several instances of questionable level design especially on harder modes. Depending on the powers you have at some points, certain stage sections become absurdly hard, which is a problem, because you don't really have a good control of the items you get. The weapon items you get through the game automatically overwrites a one of your side weapons, and you can't choose which to change, so sometimes you want to change a certain weapon but the game changes the other, which is pretty terrible and honestly a major problem in the game. You should be able to choose which side weapon to change. Worth the price.
Not a bad little game. The engrish is a bit rough and it has a DESPERATE need of a continue feature. but its not totally unfair until the last level
Ha Ha very funny to reset the game if you press 'Space'. Also volume is loud and no way to adjust it. But once you have gotten past this nonsense above there is a tough game here underneath. Typical again that practice is needed if you intend to survive tougher difficulties. You have the ability to stop time and teleport to another direction. Just don't overdo it or you run out of juice for that critical ability and get wrecked by the bullet storm. So yeah practice and patience needed. For me even at bite sizes of this game every now and then is quite enough if i pay the price by getting whacked around level 5 and 6 too easily. But it's still entertaining when you want some of that bullet hell goodness. I wish i would stop grazing them shots though. No Limit breaks, star collecting or grazing counters or anything here but what can you do, habits from other games just don't go away easily.
Vertical cute 'em up with a robot theme. Good controls. Focus and warp mechanics. Upgradable robot parts. Cute presentation, big sprites and bullets. Music is an acquired taste. Funny story.
