Nota 4/10.
If your a fan of 2D bullet hell games + visual novels then give this beautifully hand drawn shooter a try. A more detailed review can be seen here https://youtu.be/sXnJIY6c-J0
Its a solid side scrolling shooter. It has benefits for playing 2 player and it definitely is fun. It does have a few bugs and is still being worked on by the dev. Even so it's worth buying.
Great game.
Just started playing this morning. I will be investing time in this one. You can tell right away how good it is. I love that there's a story to explore along the way. I love the many facets used to tactically navigate your ship through the levels. I love that there's a risk reward system. Oh man, I have a lot more to learn, but right away this has grabbed me. Whoever made this is obviously someone who loves shooters (SHMUPS), and put tons of love and hard work into it. Super smooth, polished, old school vibes, modern sensibility, immersive and straight up beautiful.
Wings of Bluestar is the kind of game I loathe to not recommend. It clearly had a lot of passion put into it, but despite that; it has too many flaws for me to enjoy it and suggest others give it a try. Let's start with the positives. I like the had drawn art style. It's a little rough around the edges, but it has charm. Equally, I like the color palette used. The music is fine, but I'm pretty sure I heard it pause and start to repeat itself part way through the first stage. Game play wise, Wings of Bluestar plays a little different than most shoot 'em ups. Your ship move faster when not firing. Which I suppose is a neat angle to reward the player from letting up on the fire button. I'm ABS (Always Be Shooting) 4 life, so I found this mechanic annoying. I much prefer games that offer a faster but weaker shot and a powerful but slower/focused shot mechanic instead. The game also has a charged shot mechanic. As a rule, I don't like charge shot mechanics in shmups. Since there has to be a break in the action to allow the charge time or else the player has to risk the play area filling up with enemies or bullets to charge their weapon. Either way, very few shooters I've played pull it off well. Wings of Blue Star is not one of them. Through much of the stage (at least the ones I reached so far), the player can dominate the play area with normal shots and memorization of what and where the enemies are coming from. Only the end stage bosses seem like a good use of the charge shot, but these bosses turn the game into a bullet hell then. The player ship also can grab pick ups that offer turret-like satellite weapon that the player can control the angle of shot. I don't typically like this mechanic. Since it usually give the game designer license to have enemies come at the player from all directions diffusing their focus or requiring more stage memorization. Wings of Bluestar is no exception. Fortunately, the game is nice enough to give warning indicators to when this happens. It doesn't change that I find it annoying. I tend to either leave them at forward firing, or set them rear firing to avoid working my ship around enemies to get them in front of me. Especially since this weapon is an upgrade, meaning that at any part of the game the player may not have it. I certainly hope that portions of the game are designed to need it when the player may not have it. Because if so, maybe it should just be a permanent weapon system not a pick up upgrade. But either way it is either a nicety to make the game easier or something that makes sections of the game far more difficult/impossible without it. And Gradius Syndrome isn't as charming as it was decades ago. The game doesn't seem particularly difficult much of the time. So long as the player keeps control of the play area. However, once the player does start to slip up, the challenge really spikes. Going from a few enemy projectiles to a full on bullet hell. And not an inspiring one either. Especially with boss fights. Which seem to want the player to make use of the shield (for one of the two playable characters) rather than dodge. Since the bullet patterns are kinda tight, the player ship box is kinda big and the controls aren't super tight. I also not a fan of the boss fights. It took me a few games to defeat the first stage boss. It wasn't that I could survive the boss, I could. The game would just time out before I defeated it. Since there is a timer, I figure the game doesn't want the player milking it, ir it wants a particular attack pattern to dispatch it. Now, I know I'm not a good shmup player, but I generally can get a feel for how far off I am from being good at a game. When I did finally beat the boss, it took me a full minute of game play. Which is shmup terms, is an eternity. I don't care for shooters that throw an end of game boss that takes more than a minute to defeat let alone the first stage. So, I think maybe I'm doing something wrong like not making use of the charge shot or not targeting a spot that does extra damage. After wanting a video of another player fighting that same boss, it also took them about a minute to beat. And it's not like the first stage boss even has a bunch of stages or mixes things up much. It was 2 or 3 phases that didn't feel that different to me. Small dodge windows that didn't really have rhyme or reason beyond make sure you have the shield upgrade. Controls and options are another weak part of this game. It doesn't seem to allow me to use my controller of choice (8-button USB Sega Genesis controller) even with a MayFlash Magic Pro. When I use an XBox controller, the sticks don't work in the menu selection. I have to use the d-pad. Which is less an issue, just weird. Going through the Discussions, the game had stutters and slow downs previously. I don't know how bad it was then, but I still occasionally have it happen while playing as well. It's nothing like back in the 1990s on consoles, but it still seems happen a bit. I think a lot of work went into making Wings of Bluestar. So, I feel a little bad that I can't recommend this game. While much of my criticism is just personal preference, I also think there at least a few elements that aren't good. I tend to write longer reviews for games that I don't recommend, but I wanted to like to really explain why.
Interet : 14/20 Realisation : 15/20
Wings of Bluestar was on sale during the Summer Steam sale and decided to take the plunge. The game is a sidescrolling shootemup reminiscent of games like Pulstar from the Neo Geo. Before starting the game I recommend going through the training / tutorials. I did not do this until after a story model / arcade playthrough and missed some vital information in game mechanics. I originally thought the ship was just way too slow only to find it slows down when firing constantly. The graphics have a hand drawn feel to them, very colorful and lively. The colors can sometimes make differentiating your enemies / powerups / items in the heat of the moment though. Fortunately there are some graphic settings to help with the backgrounds. In addition to your standard sidescrolling mechanics, there's credits that can be used to unlock gallery / SFX libraries as well as added bonuses during the game, so replay value is there as well. Overall, my impressions are good and plan on pushing the game to completion.
Wing of Bluestar is a beautiful and challenging shoot ’em up that perfectly blends classic arcade action with modern design. Tight controls, stunning pixel art, great music, and an unexpectedly deep story make it a must-play for fans of the genre. Highly recommended!
