It's like a modern R-Type with really impressive hand-drawn graphics and a cool OST. Really solid game, recommended!
Summary: Wings of Bluestar is a cool bullet-hell style horizontal shmup. It has a unique 2D manga/anime art style and lots of different game modes and content to unlock. Recommended! Premise: Playing as one of two pilots, each with their own ship with different weapons, the gamer must navigate a scrolling environment and defeat invading aliens by shooting them. A lot! Presentation: This game is nicely presented with lovely 2D hand-drawn artwork and with good VFX, sound and music. It ran well on my 1070 mobile with very occasional slow down. Comments: I must admit I am more of a classic shmup fan (think e.g. R-Type / Gradius) than bullet-hell but I did very much enjoy playing this game once I focused on dodging more than shooting. There is a lot of content to enjoy here including a branching story mode, many art unlockables, training mode, boss rush and local co-op. The developer has obviously put a huge amount of time and effort into this game and continues to release patches / improvements etc such as twin-stick shooting mode which works great. Congrats and two thumbs up!
This game has no reason to drop frames as much as it does. I've played many more demanding shmups without stutters or frame drops so this must be an optimization issue on the game's part The game itself is just ok, only get it when it's on discount
A really fun horizontal shmup that reminded me a lot of R-Type and Pulstar. The hand drawn art is what separates it from the rest, and it's not just cutscenes- everything from your ship, to the backgrounds to the enemies are all hand drawn and look great. As you progress you earn money which you can use to unlock gallery, sound test and boss rush. But most importantly you can buy more credits so you can keep going. There's story mode, which includes a sort of visual novel game before getting into the shmupness. Not really my thing, although I do appreciate the artwork as well as an auto on to blast through the text. Then there's arcade mode which is why we're all here. But the more and more I was playing this game, I couldn't help but think that it would be incredible if the game would cater not just to shmup fans but also visual novel fans. For example, let's say you really like visual novel games but not interested in the shmup part... maybe add an option to make you near invincible and/or make the game a lot easier. The achievements are done really well. There's 90 of them and while some require higher difficulty, many others do not. Which brings me to difficulty. The game has Easy, Normal, Hard, and Super Hard. The most noticable change in difficulty are the enemies have suicide bullets on higher ones, while the bosses on hard and super hard they have too much health and felt spongey. The first level of the game has a very R-Type feel to it- memorizing enemies, bullets, etc. Here i was really zoned in. I loved it. But shortly afterwards the game goes into bullet hell, as well as enemy hell. Even in the easy setting it's a bit too much for me. If the dev revamped the difficulties and also included a non-bullet hell option I think this game would really shine and open it up to a ton more players. Combine this with the VN stuff I mentioned earlier and I think this could be a game that could cater to fans of 2 completely different genres from each other. Sounds crazy I know. It would take a lot of work sure, but I honestly think this game has the potential to do so.
I really like this shmup. It's great if you enjoy R-Type. The turret takes a good half hour to master. Some of the enemies bullets are aqua and the sky is blue, so sometimes you do get killed because you aren't paying close attention. Overall, I like the level of difficulty at the easy level. It's relaxing to play, although the turret is frustrating to play with an arcade stick. With the controller, you control the turret with the left and right trigger. I like it. It's a good B tier shmup. Pick it up if it goes on sale. Nice music and beautiful graphics.
Discovered this game on Twitter today and the developer graciously agreed to let me do some testing on Steam Deck. I’m still very early in the game, but performance is great using the default settings. There is a slight barrier the first time you launch the game on Steam Deck. When creating a profile the virtual keyboard doesn’t work, so entering a profile name requires a physical keyboard. I’ve reported this to the developer and they are working diligently to make this more accessible. With that out of the way, this game performs excellently out of the box. The frame rate stays consistently at 60 during game play and only hitches during the death animation and between menus. These slow downs do not affect game play in any way. The game also seems to be well optimized with little demand on GPU. My fan speed didn’t get out of control and battery estimates were very high. Finally my initial impressions. This game is was definitely designed with care and attention to detail. I was surprised to hear VO in the opening scenes, and even more surprised that it wasn’t extremely cheese. The bullet hell game mechanics are satisfying and seem to be approachable for players of varying skill levels. I adore the art style and soundtrack, and while I know the main focus of the game isn’t story I’m hoping it will remain compelling. Extra note: the power ups, card drops, and achievements are all hitting the correct pleasure centers in my brain 🤩. I’ll report back as I play more or as soon as an update drops.
Imagine Blazing Star with an autofire option, hand-drawn assets, and (optional) twin-stick gameplay and you've got Wings of Bluestar. Most importantly, the dev is passionate and listens to the fans! There's tons of unlockables and a fully fleshed-out story mode. This game was mostly a solo project (sans music), with a single dev not only writing the story and coding the game, but also creating all the art assets. This game is worth your money and time.
First and foremost, 3 bug crashes in 10-15 minutes on an attempt to play thru the dude's story mode: 1) The first dialogue had no arrows to choose an option, after staring at the screen and moving my d-pad around, the "A" Button glitched out on the 1st dialogue response and just kept automatically "clicking" and it wouldn't stop 2) Stage 3 my plane didn't appear and the game scrolled all the way to the boss 3) I reset Stage 3, played for about a minute or two, and then the game went to transition into a building, but the background simply went black and nothing happened after The developer responded to a Negative review saying that the Story is just "Extra" but it's a feature in the game so you can't just write it off as a freebie that you can't complain about. Due to the 3 bugs that occurred in under 20 mins of play, I'll be returning this game. Beyond those bugs, I played for 30 mins total, and I could tell this wouldn't be a game I'd play beyond a couple hours. First this story is non-sensical. An advanced AI that only wants humans to be peaceful accomplishes said task. The humans have ended all wars and are content w/the tech given by the AI. However, out of the blue the AI decides that humans will become angry and want to start war if they don't add synthetic tech to their brains. Humans say that's dumb, and rightfully so I mean they are being peaceful and stopped war after listening to the AI's advice. So the peace loving AI pre-emptively starts a war since these peaceful humans won't be peaceful w/o the AI's tech implants. Anyways, you've heard this cliche plot before on B-rated movies. Okay, so there is that. The graphics eh. One dude did them, and that is impressive but some animations could have used an extra frame or two. Story Mode bosses died in like 5 secs. Idk what is going on here. I swear Stage 2's boss was actually only like 2-3 seconds, and it blew up, and I thought here comes the next boss stage but it was just "GREAT!" Boss defeated. I LMAO. The gameplay & bullet patterns are slow so if ur just a casual shoot'em up person, then this game will be a fair challenge. Music is beeps and boops. Can't say I didn't like it as it is still beeping and booping in my head atm. Best of luck to this developer, a noble effort just not my thing, er, shoot'em up->
If you love "Bullets Hell" shooters take a look at this little masterpiece. I find it even much longer than many other similar ones. Furthermore, the various updates make it clear that the developer cares a lot. I am very happy to have bought it back. Recommended
