I wanted to wait til Willy-Nilly Knight was release and I have some hours under my belt to post a review. It is a single player top down RPG made by a small indie studio who put a lot of love into the game. Combat is turn based, not unfair and done rather well, you level up different skills and stats, get armour and weapon upgrades from combat, crates or quest rewards Pretty standard fare, but it just has a certain charm to it and alot of funny humor. Graphics look good and the soundtrack is on point. At it's price point it's a steal, hidden gem, glad I found it.
Nice! Very nice! Cons: - Found a couple of mistakes in translations. - Missed unusual screens resolutions support. But on the second monitor (16:9 1920x1080) it runs in full resolution. - Unable to move camera by WSAD or Arrow buttons. - Camera moving not smoothly... Profs: + Interesting story. Can't wait for tonight to continue the game. + Easter eggs! Very funny, already found two. ;) + Midcore tactical combat system, easy to learn and joy to play. + Simple, but very charm graphic! + Arthur and Excalibur. Just saw the Legend of the sword yesterday, but here we have the completely new story. + Old-School atmosphere! Not like Divinity OS, but like Icewind Dale or Baldur's Gate. Back to the roots, i like it! + HUGE POTENTIAL! If you, Guys, will fulfill all your promises, it will be the GREAT game! Way to go, Guys, way to go!
So far i'm extremely into the game. Its a fun and challenging game. The combat system reminds of divinity original sin and anything above that no. But it has it own kinda feel, its a very basic idea of an rpg but somehow it also strikes me fun and addicting. And for 15$ its almost a steal. AND If a Dev reads this, i love the idea of the jokes about games and movies in the game. And i kinda dig it because of the main character.
Overview
Willy-Nilly Knight (WNK) is an isometric turn-based RPG set in a fantasy world. Players impersonate Arthur, an average young man that suddenly finds himself transported to an entirely different reality, and also chased by dark forces afterwards. Trailing an ancient prophecy about the legendary sword Excalibur while gathering a party of adventurers, Arthur will have to face increasingly difficult odds as he works his way up to become an hero of the kingdom. 🟩 Pros

Pleasant art style and visuals, go along well with the fantasy setting.
Overall satisfying progression in terms of skills and gear.
Good amount of secondary quests with worthwhile rewards.
Fair content amount of the proposed price tag.
🟥 Cons

The story is clichè, poorly written, overwhelmed by references and memes.
Enemies are generic, often recycled and have very basic tactics.
Significant balance issues in late-game make the experience too easy.
Visible lack of polish and refinement in multiple fields.
Certain quests can break because of bugs.

Rating: Decent
Click here for the complete Rating Chart https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2129314463 For the good side, let's start by saying the art style is overall quite pleasant, and is accompanied by decently made hand-drawn illustrations for characters and equipment. The style of most models is consistent and suits the fantasy settings well, featuring "standard" creatures such as orcs, undead and wild beasts. The progression pacing and variety are done pretty well, and keep players wanting to unlock more skills and better gear without doing so too fast or too slowly - until late game that is, where things start lacking. Side quests might not be memorable, but at least are worth doing as they often give out unique pieces of gear. Now onto the slightly more consistent bad side. The biggest issue with this game is the story itself, which should be a pillar of any RPG: the abuse of references and clichès, ranging from "Pandalf the Grey" to Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) passing through the Buster Sword of FFVII is just staggering, gives out the feeling there is little to no actually original content. The writing is nothing special and also poorly translated in English many times. The fact enemies are various "shades" of the exact same foe most of the time becomes annoying in the long run, bosses included sometimes. In late game the huge amount of money, XP and exceptional items found (with a bit of searching) annihilates any progression feeling, so players can have everything they want in terms of consumables and gear from shops. Ultimately this makes late game phases easier than previous ones. There are many minor and moderate issues ranging from clunky interface handling to quests breaking, generally it shows the game needs several more polishing passes, and seems hastily put together at times. Overall WNK is a very barebones, basic RPG experience with low depth, mediocre story but also reasonable content amount. It has many flaws although for the most part it can be enjoyable for those that do not expect a polished experience, and are looking for a simpler RPG to spend some time. It took me 13 hours to complete the game and all the side quests I could find on Hard difficulty, for the proposed price of 15€ I would suggest waiting for a sale before buying, given the barely decent content quality.
Liked this review, and want to see more of the same quality? Exploration Is performed on foot, traversing various zones connected by transition areas. As one character moves, the party will follow suit, but there is no individual control of each member, this can be detrimental for tactical placement before a battle. Each area of the world contains a certain number of non-respawning enemies, while also containers filled with more or less rare treasure, ranging from crafting materials to unique gear. The world map can be used to fast travel at anytime, and since there is a lot of backtracking, that is definitely useful, however some dungeons are excluded from this function. Searching each map carefully definitely gives an advantage in terms of money and equipment. Party Management Is done with the inventory panel, which also displays each character's statistics, and each individual member's skill tree. At every level up you'll have 1 stat point and 1 skill point to allocate, there is no respec so think well. Some stats have double value depending on the character, and often are related to their class. Each gear piece is class-specific and also has a level restriction before it can be worn. party member roles are very definite (Tank, ranged dps, melee dps, support) and you should stick with them as they can't really be deviated from anyway. Trading/Crafting Are complementary processes, the first is done with merchants which sell gear and materials for a price, while the second can be done anytime to craft consumables such as scrolls or potions, all recipes are available from the start, which is cheaper than buying them directly - plus, high level ones can only be made and not bought. Quests Are given by NPCs and have various stages, each of which has to be triggered in sequence. They are unremarkable and generic such as elimination or gathering, though generally have good rewards. Some of them can be broken if players gain certain items or slay enemies before intended. All quests are linear and have no choices to make. Combat Plays out in a turn based fashion, where each character and enemy has a certain number of action points and can use them to move, attack or use abilities. Each party member has unique skills and a definite role in the field, while also diverse damage types such as slashing, piercing, fire, holy and more. Enemies can be scanned with right-clicks to reveal weaknesses and resistances, using the right damage type against the right enemy is a big part of combat. Enemy AI is very basic and can be easily fooled into attacking your tank while ignoring less resilient characters - this makes most fights play out in the same way and not very challenging. There is no resurrection mechanic so once someone is down, he stays down, however your party is completely healed after each fight. AP can be conserved for the next turn without an upper limit, this can really become unbalanced especially against single enemy bosses. The amount of skills and mechanics is adequate but not as deep as other titles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2129316129 Technical PC Specs: RTX2080Ti, Ryzen 3900X, 32GB RAM DDR4 Critical Problems: None. Optimization: Resource usage is on the high side given the simple visuals and effects. Not very good. Performance: Runs without issues in 1440p, 85hz. Bugs: Several item bonus stats do not sum correctly to characters. Some enemies have inconsistent stats for their level with no reason. Some passive status effects have a debug code name instead of a proper name. Other issues: No vsync option.
Final Thoughts
WNK is a decent RPG that is barely sufficient, and has many issues but also some good points. If you're looking for a simpler RPG experience, this might just be worth on sale, but otherwise move on if you seek deeper experiences. This game was reviewed using a free key
Is Willy-Nilly Knight a great game that is going to be remembered in the annals of gaming history? No, but, if you are a TRPG fan and pick it up for under 10 USD, it is worth a playthrough. Does it have a great story? No, the story is at best mediocre. It is interesting enough that you will not get bored and the ubiquitous pop culture references, while somewhat ham-fisted, did manage to elicit a chuckle or two. The game does not take itself seriously (the name of the game should make that obvious), and the plot is suitably light-hearted, if bare-bones. Does it have great gameplay? The gameplay is good, and really the reason I am giving this game a recommendation. You play with a party of initially 2 and eventually 4 premade characters that each have their own class. Each class has its own skill tree and equipment (although the Warrior and Knight share armor). It is a turn-based game with action points and skills with cooldowns. You also have your standard consumable potions and scrolls. The problem is that the skills are lackluster compared to the standard attack and consumables. There are some good abilities (passives, heals and CC abilities) but it's a shame that most of the damage, buff and debuff abilities aren't worth using. That said, there is a fair amount of tactical variation in combat, achieved largely through a mix of melee and ranged enemies, and a mix of magical and physical attacks/resistances. How is the difficulty? I played the game on the highest difficulty setting, Demiurge, and it was on the easy side for the genre. Positioning and use of CC to stun-lock tough opponents was necessary. However, I only had to use consumables while I had a two-person party. The battles with multiple opponents were harder than the battles against single opponents, and unfortunately the final battles were largely of the latter type. The economy is tight enough that you can't equip everyone with the best equipment, although you can equip everyone with the best weapon and keep your tank in the best armor, which is really all the game requires. By end game, with the exception of 3 pieces of gear, everyone had the best equipment.
Whilst I initially liked the game and found it quite good, the combat leaves a LOT to be disired. There is no strategy involved. Having placed my characters behind a huge rock, the enemy could cast spells straight through the rock and damage my characted. Not area of effect spells, but individual spells ie. magic misile. My intent was to force the ranged enemy to come closer by having to navigate the obstacle, but no, they did not need to do that. They just got within the required range and blasted my characters strainght through the huge rock. Why have any obstacles at all, just a blank game screen would have sufficed. Disapointed to say the least.
This is a good attempt, but the execution is lacking. It feels unfinished. There's a partial crafting system and the game hints via tooltips or text associated with some items that you can craft things with them. You never get a blueprint, recipe, etc. using any of them. You can craft potions and scrolls, and that's about it. Arena mode - tacked on and boring. You select your team, so you can have a team of all one character, two of each, or whatever you want. The AI is so bad if you wait on the first turn you can kill 1 or 2 of the enemy team before they can barely scratch you. If you take all rangers you are guaranteed to win every single time unless you try to lose. Combat is repetitive and dull. The graphics are so-so. Sound is repetitive. The music seemed okay, but I turned it off very early into the game because I got tired of it quickly. The GUI needs work. There's no drag/drop of items to the quickbar, you have to go the inventory, click the item, send it to the hotbar, exit the inventory then drag it where you want it. If you don't aim properly when dropping the item or skill it'll disappear and you have to repeat the process. Clunky pretty much sums up the whole game including the writing. The game's written as if the writer was youth writing for a child or another youth. Sadly with a bit more work this may have been a decent game but it seems like it was rushed out before it was done. It's also glitchy. Sometimes a character's turn won't end. You'll be out of action points that you use to move, attack, use items, cast spells, or do anything else during a fight but if you keep clicking you can move anywhere you want for zero cost. Combat is very rinse-repeat. The ranger is overpowered, critting like crazy. It's too easy to stun/lock one enemy at a time because of multiple skills that stun/root the target. This makes fights dull and drawn out for no good reason. I don't like the skills. Too many skills do nothing more than slightly bump damage or effects on one or two other skills. One character has a skill that boosts health and armour and another that reduces it but bumps damage. I'm not going to waste time going over why they're poorly thought out and why you wind up using the same 2 or 3 things repeately. Also, there are not very many active skills per character and by the end of the game you will unlock nearly everything. Some skilsl are pointless. You can waste a bunch of action points guarding with the knight but it only lasts 2 rounds. You're almost always better off killing something instead of getting a 10 or 20 percent damage reduction for 2 rounds. Same goes for the mage's protection spell. Maybe if it lasted longer, or if the spell worked on the whole group it might be worth it, but damage output and stuns are all you really need. I know I said I wouldn't talk about it but I really didn't like the skills or system used. Stats. Uh.. classes get 1 free point per level to spend, but get +2 if they spend the point in a class stat, or +1 if they spend it elsewhere. It's almost useless to put points into anything but dexterity for the ranger, and anything but intelligence for the mage. For the other two characters you can benefit from a few points in strength, constitution and maybe a couple in dex - but not really worth it. To use MMORPG roles in describing the characters - the knight tanks, the dwarf is kind of a DPS/off tank, the ranger and mage are dps and dps/heals. The knight and dwarf (warrior class) share armour types, and you can only buy *ONE* of each type in the shops. As in one tier 1 helmet. One tier 2 helmet. One tier 4 armour. So, one character can use the best gear, the other gets the dregs. Yeah, you find a few things here and there that they can use so they don't always have hand-me-downs, but the other two characters get gear that only they can use. Want two archers? Nope. Only the ranger can use a bow. Want your knight to use a hammer instead of a sword? Nope, only the "warrior" can swing a hammer. Want your mage to jump into melee? Nope, she can't swing that staff, only shoot magic from it. I also really disliked the story, especially the "love story" aspect because it's so cheesy and poorly written, and the ending. I won't spoil them for you. Also, too many pop culture and gaming references. Too many cameos. It got to a point where I wanted it to stop, but it doesn't. There's far too much running back and forth over the same areas. Run speed should be increased a bit, it would make the game more bearable. So, anything good? Yeah, at first the combat is semi-fun but it drops off quickly. The graphics are passable. Load times are low. Glitches aren't game-breaking and very few and far between. Animations are so-so, but not bad. There is fast travel which helps considering how often you're going to go back to the same places. The economy seems fairly balanced, you can't just buy everything at the beginning of the game, however by the end I bought just about every great item I could. I think if I held off and didn't waste money on low level stuff I could have purchased *all* of the endgame stuff the game offers. Maybe I got my money's worth since it was on sale, and maybe you'll find it's worth it at a hefty discount but I can't really recommend the game in its current unfinished and unpolished state.
As it stands I can't recomend this game. The skills are unbalanced and deal less damage than normal attacks. The combat is broken as the enemies are to kill your main hero in one round. It feels like the game was untested. The dev is pretty active on the forums so I hope a balance patch is released soon then I may change my review later on, but for now hold off on this one. 5/28 Update- Well no patch since last year. Nothing has been rebalanced and the devs just disappeared. Pass on this one folks.
if you like divinity original sin, you'll love this not near the scale of divinity, but I picked this up on sale for 12 bucks combat is exactly like DOS minus the elemental stuff fun game, nice artwork, music is decent, simple crafting the gear is a little thin, it would be nice to find more random treasure totally worth the money
