Right. WhereHurt. I'm going to keep this brief. This thing where certain curators and reviewers negative review games if the dev announces he or she is going to remove their game, then decides to keep it on Steam due to a seeming new or renewed interest in their game (or they neg review it because the dev doesn't give them the final discount they were demanding). And in many instances openly harass said developers, threaten to refund their game now that it isn't being delisted (despite said "people" almost universally calling themselves "preservationists"), call them scammers, act indignant if the dev didn't give them the discount they were demanding, etc... That ish is not okay, and said curators and reviewers should be penalized for that sort of scummy behavior. And that is how this developer and game have been treated, unfortunately. I'd encourage real gamers to ignore that crap and focus on the merits of the game itself. With that out of the way, This game has a lot of potential. It's got great atmosphere, is creepy, and looks pretty cool in that older graphics engine kind of way. No idea which is actually being used here though. Simple assets are used but used effectively. The audio provides a constant reminder that not all is well. I think all that is great. Also, the controls work perfectly well, although the design decision to have you hold down certain interact prompts for five seconds is a weird one. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3413756198 The developer did try to make your goals more intuitive by providing little in-game journal prompts to help you with progression. I assume this was in response to initial complaints some people had while playing this. And this demonstrates that the dev does pay attention and is wanting to make this a better experience. There are some issues, however. For one, the clues, while properly done in English (not sure if there are other languages available), are done by somebody who probably isn't a native or natural English speaker/reader, and so the directions can seem a bit indistinct. For example, it will tell you to walk down the street to the left, follow it to the right, and 50 meters ahead will be your goal. But it does so in as few words as possible and lacks what I'd consider to be the full measure of proper phrasing or context. Which can lead to possible misunderstandings between the clue and the player. Also, there is not actually any sort of distance meter. I think visual prompts in addition to the journal prompts would be an ideal change to make here. And I did not note any way to access an actual journal to read back through the clues without having to go back to the exact spot the clue popped up at. That would also be something that the dev might consider adding. Additionally, everything is very dark even with the brightness maxed out. This is probably due to the game wanting you to find light switches and such, and to ramp up the atmosphere, but I'd argue it is too dark irrespective of the intent. And once you are in your hotel room, you are supposed to find a lamp to light before it will allow you to progress further. I had no problem finding the lighter needed. Could not find the lamp anywhere. Skill issue? Probably. I'm sure I'm just not seeing the obvious. But nonetheless, it is a clear impediment to advancing the story. It wasn't in the drawers, wasn't in the kitchen, etc... Or at least, I couldn't find it. Making required items easier to find, especially when the game is so inherently dark, is important, and is another thing for the dev to consider changing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3413756137 I'm going to give this game a positive rating at the moment, since there is no neutral rating on Steam and there is a promising game here. And it is also super inexpensive at 99 cents retail, although I'm pretty sure I actually paid even less at 49 cents for it myself. But I would also advise keeping an eye on WhereHurt's updates before making the decision to purchase it. Let's see what the dev can do to make this a smoother experience first. Due to its uniqueness, the theme is difficult to understand, it is also incomplete with severely limited presentation, and an unmaintainable system. Therefore, sales are being discontinued, and on other platforms, as soon as possible, it will be available for free. A completely different, much larger game will take its place, and we hope it will better win the favor of players. Thank you for your understanding.
