WellBound is a small survival game that drops me into a dark world after I fall down a well. I have to explore the area, collect materials, find food and work out how to complete three rituals so I can escape. I like the idea because the game starts out feeling fairly harmless, with me wandering around and gathering things, but there is something clearly wrong with the world. The creatures start acting differently as I make progress, and eventually I have to worry about them actively hunting me. The exploration and gathering are the parts I enjoy most. The world is procedurally generated, so the exact layout changes between runs, and there are three different biomes with their own materials and items. I can find food that restores health and hunger while also giving me different buffs, and I can combine materials together to craft things that help me survive. I like having to look around and decide what is worth picking up because I never know exactly what I am going to need later. It gives the early part of a run a nice feeling of slowly preparing myself for something worse. The crafting is simple, but there are some useful ideas behind it. I can make traps to deal with the creatures, along with tools that have more specialised uses. The camouflage net is especially useful because it lets me hide, while the bucket can be used to collect liquids. I like that these items are not just different versions of weapons. They actually give me different ways of dealing with the world. The three rituals are also meant to work as separate puzzles and challenges, which gives me a clear reason to explore and gather resources instead of doing it endlessly. The biggest problem for me is the amount of content. The current Early Access version is only around 30 minutes long, and at that point it is difficult for me to judge it like a full survival game. I can replay the generated world, but there is not really a larger progression system yet. The developer has plans for multiple runs, more biomes, additional materials and a story that develops as I escape the well repeatedly, but those are future plans rather than things I can properly experience right now. That makes the game feel much more like the foundation of something bigger than a finished survival experience. I also think the game needs more polish before I could give it a really high rating. The basic systems work together well enough, but there are still rough edges that remind me I am playing an Early Access project from a solo developer. The visuals have a simple pixel style that works with the darker atmosphere, although I would like more environmental variety and more interesting things to discover. The recent updates have added sound effects, ambience, a journal and lore pages, along with various fixes and visual improvements, so there is clearly work being done to build the experience up. I just think the game needs much more of that before the survival loop can really show what it is capable of. Overall, WellBound has a good little idea underneath its very small amount of content. I like the procedural exploration, crafting, food buffs, traps and the way the world gradually becomes more dangerous as I complete the rituals. The problem is that there simply is not enough here yet, and the current version feels more like an early look at a future game than something I would spend a long time playing. Since it is free and still in Early Access, I am more willing to give it credit for having a promising foundation, but I would need much more content, variety and progression before I could put it alongside the stronger survival games I have played.
