Game was fun at first, but after getting the silver and gold keys, I must have missed the Bronze key and got soft locked in the room that requires it. Would have loved to see the rest of the game but I was already so far in with no way to die so I would have to replay the entire game to get to that point.
6/10
fun game. you should play it

GAME OF THE YEAR! It's going to take losing my sanity to beat it but it's fine don't need it anyway
Nocturnal is a game that I really enjoyed for its simple but effective idea of turning fire into the heart of both combat and exploration. I play as Ardeshir, a soldier returning to his homeland of Nahran after a mysterious Mist has covered the island. I liked how quickly the game establishes that the flames around me are not just a weapon, but one of the most important tools I have for surviving this strange and dangerous place. The combat is straightforward, but I found it satisfying once I got used to the timing. My flaming sword lets me cut through enemies while also giving me a way to push back the Mist. Attacking feels especially rewarding when I can use fire to control the space around me rather than simply focusing on damaging whatever is in front of me. The combat is not incredibly deep, but it has enough weight to make each encounter feel deliberate. The fire mechanic also works surprisingly well with exploration. I can ignite parts of the environment to activate mechanisms, clear certain obstacles and reveal routes that would otherwise remain hidden. I really liked this because it makes the central mechanic feel connected to the whole game instead of being something that only matters during fights. The Mist can also react to the flames, which creates a constant feeling that the darkness is something I am actively pushing back. Progression is handled through ash that I collect while exploring and defeating enemies. I can offer it to Phoenix statues to gain new skills and bonuses, giving me a reason to search areas more carefully. I enjoyed this light upgrade system because it adds some extra motivation without turning the game into a complicated RPG. The island is fairly compact as well, so the adventure stays focused instead of becoming an enormous map filled with distractions. The atmosphere is probably my favorite part of Nocturnal. Nahran has a beautiful but gloomy visual style, with ruined buildings, dark forests and glowing fire creating a strong contrast. The hand drawn presentation gives the world a distinct identity, while the sound and music help make the quieter exploration sections feel just as important as the combat. I especially liked how the limited visibility makes the Mist feel like a constant presence hanging over the island. My biggest issue is that the experience feels a little too short and streamlined. Once I understood the combat and fire mechanics, I wanted more areas, more abilities and more enemy variety to really challenge what I had learned. Some encounters can also become predictable, and the overall adventure does not have much room for the mechanics to develop beyond their basic forms. It feels like a very focused experience rather than a game that tries to become something huge. Even with that limitation, I think the focused design works in its favor. There is very little unnecessary padding, and the entire adventure is built around the relationship between fire, darkness and exploration. I liked having to think about when to attack, when to use the flames for the environment and how to move safely through the Mist. It gave the game a clear identity from beginning to end. Overall, Nocturnal is a stylish and enjoyable action platformer with an excellent central mechanic. I really liked the way fire connects combat, exploration and the atmosphere, while the beautiful presentation makes Nahran an interesting place to explore. I wanted more variety by the end, but the focused design keeps the experience moving and prevents it from becoming repetitive. It is a compact adventure, but one that left me with a very positive impression. Rating: 6.6/10
