Welcome to Hanwell is a game that has all the potential to be a survival horror on the fringes of a city infested by monstrosities, and its atmospheric composition by James Elsey has captured that essence. Unfortunately, there are some negative features, such as the extremely unbalanced weapon combat system, where only a sword with two hits and a frying pan(?) with one hit will benefit you in this exploration. The creatures will often give crazy respawns in front of you and if you don't have one of these weapons, you'd better run or prepare for a painful 4 hits. The music is often mixed with other music or when you run away from a creature it continues to play around you even if you're already safe. The locations, which are too constructive in their attempt to bring the horror of Hanwell to life, tend to be a little deformed in their graphics, in order to consummate the loss of that atmospheric essence. In short, it's a game that has an interesting proportionality in terms of surviving, exploring and collecting, but it has certain flaws that don't give it the qualification it deserves.
This game is now free, so it's not a case of pointing out the flaws of the game but rather appreciating the things it does well. The Silent Hill approach is brilliant, albeit the town is a bit too large and walking the area can be a little slow. Walking simulator? But once you get into each of the main buildings the environment is amazing for a game from 2017. Again, it's an Indie game, and it does an excellent job in this regard. The story isn't the most in-depth and there's no real feeling to the game outside of the main goal but I've heard great things about the second game, and played this as a way of introducing myself to the realm. The bugged achievement for collecting all of the cards is a shame. I've played an hour/two since getting the 6th card and the achievement hasn't popped, but aside from that, I have no real gripes with this game. As it's free, definitely give it a play!

This game has no option to invert the y-axis. It also likes to crash, a lot. It also likes to get stuck on the main menu. My favorite part is that despite never actually being able to get past the menu and play the game, the game had crashed, the process failed to close and stayed running (frozen) in the background for six hours, making me unable to get a refund.
The game has a cool setting, but the mechanics are too weird. It's very sad that it was messed up but missing to implement some basic, but very important features for enjoying the gameplay. Instead, the game has cool optics, a spooky Silent Hill like city and fog, but is annoying the player with lacking several things. Now it's for free, ok, it's still not a game I'd like to play too long. Setting/ scenario Very nice with many details like street signs, lamps, ATMs, etc. Even today it's looking good. The enemy design is a bit boring. Combat/ weapons Why losing your weapon upon entering a building? Of course the weapon is gone afterwards, what a boring and outdated thing. The fights are clunky, the enemies feel much more powerful, but not in a challenging way, more in a way your character feels like a clumsy ballon-man with a pizza in one hand and a broken weapon in the other hand, trying to balance on a thin line while eating the pizza. Flashlight The flashlight is draining the battery, you have to wait for an annoying amount of time to use it again, so outdated as well. Caring for the flashlight power in a dark game, really? I sometimes had to wait for the damn flashlight to replenish, this is a terrible anti-feature. Please remove these crappy "searching for batteries" / "auto-refreshing flashlight" mechanics finally, at least in dark games. Objectives/ Journal/ Map Did I miss the journal with my next target? Why not adding at least some icons on the strange map to let the player know which places he still has to visit in order to finish a task? At least a journal should be a standard feature nowadays. Finally, the sequel is much better!
Paid for this game, now free. Finished and thoroughly loved the excellent sequel "Beyond Hanwell" (don't miss it !). So immediately installed "Welcome to Hanwell", but, in 2017 the dev was trying out his skills and sadly the game is uneven. Great setting, no surprise, but a couple too weird mechanics killed the game for me. To enter every house, you have to drop your weapon at the doors and enter unarmed. When you leave, the weapon is always gone, so find another ASAP (they are all over the terrain) as you are momentarily defenseless. Why ?! Blocking doesn't work apparently ? No health meter. Flashlight works for a while (Float, 0.0000 full charge to empty at 120.0000, turns off), then it's unusable for another while (red icon) till it regens to full, but ok, except if you have to wait for it in a real dark place. Got outside the starting lab, alarm of 1st foe sounds. Instead of hiding, I run towards it, found it, kill it quickly (Steam says only 28% of gamers get to do that). Continue exploring in the same initial big walled park searching for an exit for a while. Game suddenly says "You went too far, it's dangerous, turn back", no previous comment. Before I can even react, game kills me (no foe, I just died). What. the. heck. Uninstalled, forget it. Re-installed later, went to a couple houses towards the church, but ... If the dev should change the disappearing weapon weirdness, I would play this at once. Otherwise, the game will remain untouched. Conclusion: Get Beyond Hanwell, where the dev shows fully his notable talents to brilliance !!
The game feels unfinished. Plain and simple. The combat sucks, you can't hit ♥♥♥♥ with it. When you die, you somehow loose your weapon yet inventory items remain. You run slower than a toddler. There is this one anomaly which is a limping girl that constantly spawns in front of you making it absolute hell to get to a house and weapons don't work on her. I can see effort put into this, the atmosphere, the graphics and the optimization is great but the gameplay drags all of that down the sink.
Ill start by saying yes it is slightly buggy and a bit clunky at times. But its a solid indie horror game and is even free and ive seen a LOT worse free and paid horror games. The vibe of the world overall is super good like a mixture of Silent Hill and S.T.A.L.K.E.R! For anyone confused about the story heres my best take on it: To the best of my knowledge the lore of the universe seems to be in this reality S.T.A.L.K.E.R like anomalies just exist throughout the whole world and certain cities are built to defend against them so you can live normal lives in them. But something goes wrong causing the defenses to fall allowing them into the city and leading up to the games events.
