Your first case as a detective is forcing you to open your eyes to a world bigger than you thought. Or maybe it's better to keep them closed. Seems the supernatural didn’t get the memo that nothing exciting ever happens in the little town of Wayhaven.

This review is for the Wayhaven Chronicles as a whole, of which, at this time there are three books out with a 4th slated for release later this year. The TL;DR version is play it! You almost certainly won't regret it! I actually shot myself in the foot here in that this and Fernweh Saga book 1 were my first ever interactive fiction games outside of the more normalized visual novel or text heavy CRPG. Now I've all but nerfed any chance of properly enjoying other average IF titles as I started with such strong fare right out of the gate, and now everything pales in comparison. Whoops.... if you bought a bunch of IF on sale maybe play a few of the others first before this one. That being said, WH chronicles is possibly the absolute peak of interactive fiction with generally good continuity and choices that usually do matter, even if just later subtle flavor text at times. The stat raising is mostly intuitive though can be a little weird to get a handle of if it's your very first IF and you aren't familiar with stat raisers as a whole. Each book flows relatively seamlessly into the next with a different arc, but hinting at a much larger conspiracy. As for MC, you can choose the usual fare of descriptions for yourself as well as what you are attracted to (if any) the LI will be gendered based on your preferences. A nice note which keeps your options open without railroading you into specific routes that has frustrated me in many other games. With said LI you can also choose your approach and how you respond to interactions further shaping the route to your play style instead of having the author choose how you're going to interact with them. Some people want to try holding hands before going at it, Baldurs Gate 3....just saying....there are no surprise 'I was accidentally too nice to the skeleton man and jumped his bones' situations here (if you know you know). Additionally, each LI has very different back stories and personalities influencing them which is well played out though each character tends to reveal themselves at different speeds keeping things stay feeling natural. You also develop a secondary relationship with another teammate as a best friend, and I really enjoyed this dynamic. All said, the above characteristics create an infinitely replayable game almost putting it into the level of comfort game which can be casually played to burn time and find hidden differences you never noticed before. All LI have strong offerings and different personalities with an overarching story that's engaging and memorable. Even now after playing the game both on steam and mobile I discover new outcomes you can get which will more than likely be impactful in future books. ....just...play the game. You won't be disappointed.
Literally the best interactive fiction ever omg If you like romance, fantasy, mystery, and found family trope : this one is for you! I played so many times now and every time it's always a pleasure : you can really make your own MC come alive, and you can really see the difference in personality depending on which type of character you're creating (which is great bc sometimes MCs tend to be just meh but this one really does have a personality like ahhhh it's sooo good) Then all the love interests ... are just amazing, I can't even really tell if I have a favorite bc I really appreciate all of them. Though I have to say I have a preference towards F bc they were the one I chose during my 1st playthrough :') ALSO the dynamics between all of the characters = SOOO GOOD !!! Like I said earlier you can really feel the found family trope in this story , like they're adorable :(( All I have to say is please buy it and the rest of the series too (can't wait for book 4 while im writing this haha)
A denouement of some drama and interest is preceded by a slough of tedious events; as much as half of the 21 chapters could and should have been summarily dealt with in a prologue. The mayor, the journalist, the friendly pathologist and the boring job of a small town detective do little to support the main theme of supernatural horror; neither do the lacklustre murders going on, or the unthreatened, uninteresting banter of the vampire investigators. Successful Choicescript games are packed with consequential tasks and events from the start, rather than failing at great length to build up any sense of horror through atmospheric or psychological description. They challenge the player rigorously and often for engagement and excitement, rather than tacking a couple of stat tests onto almost twenty chapters of stat building through inconsequential dialogue. Generally, they build relationships either in-game or on a strong pre-game foundation. Whereas in Wayhaven the MC's mother drops into the narrative with about as little sense of foregoing relationship as the four paper-thin vampires the MC is expected to fall for from a standing start, on the strength of by-the-numbers dialogue rather than any intensive shared experience until the very end. The game does give the MC an unusually large range of dialogue options and personality traits, but these have very little effect on the game. The second and third instalments may be very good games, for all I know or ever expect to.
It's been a long time since I had been engaged so much into a piece of media. I haven't played any interactive fiction before, and I am mind-blown. I have always been a lover of all things supernatural, with vampires holding a special place in my heart. As such, this book truly spoke to me, as an avid reader and as a gamer. The best way to describe how this book made me feel, is "It felt like I was 10 again, and my mom just showed me twilight." If you love books, supernatural media, romance novels and feel that many modern titles, especially in the romantasy genre, just don't do it for you, check this one out. You will not be dissapointed.
Great choice book game. Love the character development and the whole three book saga. Recomend to anyone who loves a good romance and all things supernatural.
Slow pacing, shallow characters, stupid protagonist. Maybe the author was going for dramatic irony when so much of the story is letting the player know what's happening while the character is too dense to connect the dots? But it's just annoying.
This isn't bad for an IF, especially one from choiceofgames.com (the bar is under the crust of the earth here). The spelling and grammar are good, the characters are varying degrees of decent and there are some interesting deviations from standard supernatural (vampire) stories. The "flirty" options are either flustered/nervous or "licking your lips/creepy", which doesn't really give you a lot of room to maneuver through in game romantic relationships. MC is a detective and as a person firmly in the ACAB category I find that both gross and honestly boring (cops/detectives in games in general are very, very overdone). Still, there are much worse ways to spend a day or two, so I'd give it a 6.5/10.
