I don't have this game completed and I don't care! This game has a brutal difficulty curve, far more brutal than I can deal with. I'm stopping this right now. I don't mind a hard difficulty curve like Castle in the Darkness, but this... this is so hard I've died probably over 100 times to the first boss and I don't know how to improve.
Controls are a little stiffer than I anticipated but this game is really fun. It's a little slow to start but once you get all your main attacks unlocked (it won't take long!) flying around and swording enemies feels great.
The game does not give the best first impression. It first launched in a really tiny window, it doesn't explain it's controls or mechanics very well, and the opening 30 minutes might be some of the most boring in gaming history. However, things make a dramatic change for the better and I can confidently say that WotR is well worth the asking price (+) Tight platforming. Fast, challenging combat (+) Excellent music (+) Great sense of progression (+) Art direction (-) Very slow start (-) Progression requirements can be too vague at times (-) Blocky character sprites sometimes blend into background https://youtu.be/M1qpQPslEJw
I don't normally write reviews for games, but then I saw how few reviews this game had after I finished it. It seemed wrong given how much I enjoyed Way of the Red. This game is exactly what I was looking for, and I hope it receives more notoriety. The controls are excellent. It really feels good to play this game. I really appreciate that the developers took the time to get this right. I've played more than a few indie games that looks really nice, but when I actually start playing, they just feel off. It is an absolute pleasure to be able to hop quickly from one narrow platform to another and stick the landing without having to "adjust" to the game's controls or physics. Combat feels good as well. The way you are able to string together combos and kills is very flashy and satisfying. Way of the Red is shorter than the standard metroidvania platformer. Honestly, I look on this as a pro. I think the game is priced well for the experience I got from it. I don't always want to play an 80 hour epic (in fact, I want that less and less as I get older). I got a satisfying experience that I actually want to revist in the future. I didn't find every power-up, and I look forward to my next playthrough so I can find more. There is one thing missing from the game: credits. I want to know who the creators are so I can follow thier future work. Of course, I can look on the steam page to see who it is, but this is an excellent game. You should feel proud to put your name on it. I hope to see more from you in the future.
Highly Recommended Combat Platformer
Way of the Red is a simple pixel action platformer, with heavy combat and exploration elements. It is very easy to pick up and play, and the level design is spot on. The character is nimble, so it makes the fights fair to fight. Pros Fast Heavy exploration Combat is simple but fun Really cool message about finding your life purpose Beautiful 2D pixel art Cons Sometimes difficult to figure out where to go https://youtu.be/SZQF135X3HQ Check out part 1 of my Let’s Play, future parts will be uploaded soon. Thanks so much for reading and checking out the video, I really appreciate your attention, feel free to leave a comment in the video to have a discussion
Overall, given the cost, this is pretty worth it. It's fairly short, and there's really just one part that gave me some significant annoyance. There's a "challenge" you can do at one of the first villages and due to the controls being just a little flimpy at times it can be kinda maddening. Sometimes if you hit jump again too soon before hitting the ground, or even right as you hit the ground, you won't jump. Sometimes you'll land and hit the D-pad but won't turn. If you hit jump again near the ground before quite landing you'll "glide" for a split second and that seems to wonk up your ability to swing. Similarly, some state transitions, such as gliding to landing and whatnot, kinda muck up your ability to attack in weird ways. I also don't particularly like that one button is jump as well as wall-grab as well as glide while in air.. BUT despite these nitpicks, none of them were a real source of frustration during the normal gameplay, it was just the challenge that it really stood out. With that out of the way, the music and aesthetic are solid. The story is cute, I kinda got into the little bit of the world we got to see and wanted to run about sword-chopping all the jerk enemies and it was generally pretty satisfying doing so. There seems to be a couple endings based on a pretty obvious set of choices throughout the game, and there was a good bit of platforming, fighting, a decent variety of enemies, etc. - it all kinda came together nicely for the duration that the game lasts for. For an afternoon or evening of fun it's worth a couple bucks, in my opinion, if you like the aesthetic and want to see a birdman through his quest for revenge and (ideally) the freedom of his people.
The best metroidvania I've played since Symphony of the Night. Control is fantastic and very fluid. Story and world is short, but very interesting.
Saw this on the front page of G.O.G. and came over here on steam to find out if it was also avaliable. So it is! " Way of the Red " Is a concise hack, slash and glide adventure that doesn't overstay it's welcome while still leaving a space for wanting more. You play as BlackFeather. A bird who meets a girl who dissapears one day. He decides to travel east to the not so far off kingdom in search of her. I don't wish to spoil the rather charming story that takes place over, for me, two hours ish. Overall I felt this game was really fantastic, Easily could see it become a critical darling if it picks up traction. My only real gripe with the game is that there isn't a NG+ with either harder difficulty or remixed enemy placements. There are hidden weapon techniques/power ups that you can find but I only found two ending with over 1k gold by the final boss. [olist] Pros. [*]Tight Controls [*]Addictive combat [*]Fun and surprising story [*]Stellar Music [/olist] [olist] Cons [*] Music transitions between scenes is abrupt at times. [*] Lack of ng+ [/olist] I'm not a fan of scores for reviews so I just give this the thumbs up! Really fun. At 8$ it's hard to pass up.
Way of the Red looks cute and simple. But it is a great little game with tight controls and very satisfying hack and slash combat. The story is fine, though nothing we have not seen before. The overall feel of the game brings to mind Cave Story with swords, and is a great choice for killing a few hours.
Okay, so I'm from the 8 bit/16 bit era, so I love pixel games. This game is great for the money. The selling points. Great story actually, its enjoyable. Good soundtrack. Okay... control. Not the best but not the worst. Prob. better w a controller. I'm using the keyboard, my PS4 controller didn't work. I believe an Xbox cont. would. Really, the only bad things about the game so far is there is some slow down or lag on some screens/sections. I've only come across two so far and it could be my computer, its not brand new. Like I mentioned the control. But, since like I said, the keyboard, so... yea. Its not enough to turn me away. There is also a glitch, where if you fly off the screen without an adjacent one to actually explore, the game freezies and has to be reset, so its just a matter of not doing it. Its just one of those games where its fun to see what powers your samurai bird will get next. There's red seeds that you can consume for power or save for profit. If your into Pixel, Platformer, Hack N Slash Rogue Likes with good soundtracks and a solid story you'll like this game. I think its great, def. worth the money. Happy Gaming J.W.
