I like this game because it's a puzzle game disguised as a chess game. Knowing standard chess openings isn't as useful as it would be in a chess game, because the enemy pieces don't move as predictably or according to regular chess standards. I find myself trying to build up a stable of queens (promoted pawns carry over to the next board) in the early stages. The isometric display is another challenge, one that tends to be my downfall more often than not. I do enjoy playing this game, and it's nice because you can knock out a board or two very quickly.
As someone who doesn't know how to play chess, I was able to learn the pieces and have fun!
The diagonal view of the chessboard is unpleasant when you are used to real chess. I was hoping I would have the option to set the chessboard straight, but it doesn’t seem to be possible.
Things get very interesting when the other side begins to start with better than pawns in the front rank. Definitely a fresh and novel set of challenges without feeling insurmountable. Can't wait to see what updates and features come along.
I was a beta tester This game puts a fun spin on classic chess that keeps enough of the "classic chess feel" such that anyone somewhat familiar with normal chess rules can pick up on the differences pretty quick while also changing enough that it feels like a new experience.

Gameplay - 9/10 - the roguelike elements give added depth to a game that's "depths" have already been fully explored. It feels both fresh and familiar. I also like that they have a leaderboard for high scores which brings out my competitive side.
Sound Design - 8/10 - The Music is neither overly intrusive nor underwhelming. Though a tad repetitive, it fits the vibe of the game to a T. The other SFX are like the small amount of salt in sweets, you don't always notice they are there but they are important to the overall "flavor" of the game.
Art - 7/10 - The art gives the game a retro arcade vibe that matches the music well, also the wide range of unlockable color palettes for the board and pieces is a fun addition.
Overall rating - 8/10 - Fun game if you like classic chess
Solid game that you can easily spend 15 minutes playing a quick run or two, or spend hours refining your strategy and pushing for the highest wave and score possible. Having a global leaderboard is pretty cool to see where everyone else is at with their waves skills and gives bragging rights for those that feel the need. The unique twist on chess and color schemes keep it fun and interesting while still paying homage to the original concept. Regardless if you are looking for a quick game to pass some time or something you can grind and get good at while showing off on the leaderboards, Waves of Chess is a great choice. Would recommend.
Very fun game, it has you thinking in unique ways at later waves when the CPU starts replacing their pawns with stronger pieces.
Bought this game after seeing a friend play it and its instantly addicting, the setting, music, color schemes are all amazing and for most games I just turn the music down and play my own. Its really easy to understand if youve ever played chess and ive maybe played a couple dozen matches against friends my whole life. the souls like aspect makes me want to grind for higher and higher scores and upon getting the game and opening for the first time I couldnt get off for a couple hours. only thing I would change is even though the music is good im obviously biased toward my own taste and prefer something that matches the dark space vibe.
Exactly what I've been looking for from a chess roguelike. I find a lot of paralor game roguelikes go the Balatro route and use chess pieces and movement to play a completely different game, when really i just want to play chess. Waves of Chess however is still fundamentally chess, but with a wave based structure and a handful of fun gimmicks. My only criticism is while the isometric view is very aesthetically pleasing, it does make playing chess quite a bit harder. Overall a great game though!
I like that this game shows valid moves when you click on a piece, because I can never remember who can do what. This is a great little time-killer with a banging soundtrack. Highly recomend if you're a fan of chess, a fan of strategy, or even just curious!
