This game is a load of rubbish, but it's meant to be!
WASTE is a retro arcade game throwing back to the likes of the Amiga, Commodore 64 and Spectrum. It even has a CRT filter for that extra nostalgia and there are even nods to Sir Clive Sinclair and these computers in the street names.
🕹️Gameplay🕹️
The aim of the game is to empty trash cans whilst avoiding various obstacles along the way, and come back the next day and repeat. Concentrate on your main task of waste disposal or complete side quests like stealing washing, trampling on flowers, and splashing in water to earn extra points. The game plays, looks, and feels like a title that may have been released in that era, so it is a faithful representation but with a modern twist. The difficulty has recently been modified and now it is much more challenging to play than before, which creates a lot more jeopardy and keeps you on your toes. Ultimately, you're playing to win a place on the leader board and gain achievements. The achievements are pretty bland and just involve being hit by various objects "x" amount of times. Most of them are easily achievable though, apart from the mini games which may take a bit of time. There are side quests to complete for bonus points. These can dwindle your health, as often they are deliberate tasks of sabotage like getting run over, but they are a welcome distraction from the main task of collecting trash, and because the game ends when your health depletes, you'll probably want to be careful which ones you choose.
There is an attempt to break up game play with three different mini games that a neighbour will invite you in to play, or they may ask you to deliver a letter to the post box. The mini games are very basic version of Pong and Asteroids, and a strange mini game where you have to rewire a plug. If you're very lucky they will offer you a cup of tea which replenishes all of your health. Stages do not differ enough to bat away the feeling of repetitiveness. There was an odd level based around the Wild West which was the sort of thing I would have liked to see more of, but the rest look a bit similar, even with the addition of more obstacles as you progressed. I understand that those computers had a very bland colour palette, but I wanted to see more variety in the layouts mainly, as it was always a case of going right, then left, up the same garden paths.
🍳Conclusion🍳

WASTE is a modern upgrade to the ZX Spectrum game "Trashman" and this definitely replicates that game experience well. Game play feels repetitive after a while though, due to the lack of differing locales, and the lack of variety in game play. It is fun for a while and if you're particularly interested in achievements or like chasing high scores, then there is value for money in this title. The game is cheap, and I think it answers the brief it was given, so if you like retro games, and perhaps remember Trashman, then give it a go.
