About
Wartorn is a single-player, squad-based, roguelite where players play as Yara and Elani, sisters who have been driven from their home and must traverse the wartorn Isles of Talaur to reach the safety of Beynun, their ancestral fortress. Harness the elements in fierce real-time battles while upgrading a crew of fantasy creatures as you search for your family.
Wartorn features a systemic, emergent gameplay system using the elements of fire, water, tar, plant, and lightning. Strategically choose your squads to master the elements and environment against hordes of enemies. Water extinguishes fire, tar amplifies fire, electricity crackles across the ranks in wet conditions, and water can heal plant-based units. And that’s just scratching the surface!

Build out your Caravan by recruiting squads of fantasy creatures including goblins, elves, demons, treefolk, (and more!) as you travel the world. Each squad adds new strategic options to your caravan through their different characteristics and unique abilities. Mix and match what squads you bring into battle to truly master a run. Battlefield positioning, squad combos, and skillful usage of abilities can win the day, but be careful, losses cost you morale, and if your caravan loses hope it’s game over.

The game’s blend of strategic and roguelite elements offer deep replayability, with each run feeling fresh thanks to emergent gameplay, dynamic squad management, and unpredictable narrative events that can save your struggling band or cost them their lives.

Search the Isles of Talaur to meet Yara and Elani’s family, who reveal pieces of the game’s story and grant the player heirlooms that bring with them new advantages and abilities for future runs.
Explore the Overworld Map, which shows off the massive scale of your journey. With branching paths and unexpected outcomes, every choice leads to new challenges. Be sure to monitor your hope, your food, and take care of your squads!

Roguelite mixed with RTS. The core gameplay is fun, but there are problems, mainly the heavy reliance on meta progression and the issues in combat. The Japanese translation is honestly terrible, so I switched back to English. As you’d expect from a roguelite, there’s meta progression, but it’s way too slow. Since your overall strength depends heavily on it, the balance feels off. You need to play for around ten hours before you start noticing even a slight improvement, which makes the grind feel meaningless. Each run gives you different choices, but because you end up farming materials for meta progression, those choices lose their purpose. There’s no real reason to prioritize gold, food, or gear. To be fair, there are moments when they do matter, but at some point during each run, you always end up hitting a wall, and it just feels more efficient to focus on meta progression materials instead. Combat has its own problems too. Unit pathfinding is terrible, and even RTS veterans will get frustrated. Some defense maps are just broken, with enemies throwing rocks from places you can’t even reach. https://pse.is/8c5pns If these issues were fixed, the core gameplay could really shine, but right now I can’t recommend it. Japanese.
It's not... bad. The bones of a merged RTS / Roguelike / TRPG are here! From what I've played (admittedly not much) it's smooth, there's minor jank, and it's competent enough... So what is the problem? This game did NOT sell well upon entering Early Access. They had some pretty big plans but after ~80 reviews within 6 months of release, and only 107 on full release, it's unlikely the game will see any updates moving forward. I don't blame the devs for this - with the priormentioned review #'s there's NO WAY this was profitable. You can't expect any size team to keep working on a project that is literally NOT selling. My heart goes out to them because I think they started this with the best intentions.. So what was the problem for sales? Well, for starters, the art style is INSANELY off putting. It makes your eyes bleed with how washed out it is. It's just not.. clear? Sharp? It's like they maxed out the fuzzy. Second, the voice acting is just atrocious. It's like the devs brought their youngest family members in and just handed them a set of lines. In a more story-oriented roguelike, this was a killer. Third, the lore dump is overwhelming. Bizarre names and factions are thrown around like candy, and this whole 'world' with all its rules / lore you're just expected to know. It's a lot for new players to digest. Finally, the game is structured as a Rogue-Like that leans toward 'Fail, Fail, Fail' and build up meta currency until you eventually can win, vs. player capability being strong enough upon starting to win a run. You're essentially soft-locked from winning until you acquire enough meta-progression from within the runs themselves. (And these are often rewarded vs. in-run upgrades, which further prolongues the grind). You can decide if those issues prevent you from enjoying the game. I think it's worth $20, as you'll get 10-15 hours out of it, but don't expect anything else from it. Again, I feel bad for the dev team. So much slop is released everyday on Steam while *potential* gems like this get buried, never to be heard of again. I hope their next project goes well.
If you play strategy games long enough, you will find out that they removed the features that made modern strategy games. The game is about numbers. No defense, no armor, no cover no cover, just HP, damage and heals. Start of the game, first 3 random event instantly removes a squad from your roster permanently. 16 enemy squads rushing your max 5 squad is almost impossible to win and it takes all the fun out. Grinding and more grinding. I hit you and you hit me. Text events repeat on the same journey. Poor group formation and half the squad queuing up to fight. It really sucks when we have to keep pausing the game and manual click click click when the AI is really dumb. The negative reviews weren't kidding. I tried to make a group of 5 fighting healers and really made all the way to the end but the game is so unfun I literally fall asleep. The impression the dev gives me is that they do not really know what a roguelike game is, it is a game that requires skill in a hard set up, not grinding and cockblocking. This game is definitely a no go. No chance for dev. Dev needs to play more roguelike.
Designed for grinding. A lot to love here, but it's absolutely ruined by the fact that the meta-progression system is largely numerical. Your first run your units are piss weak, your caravan will die instantly to random events (which you have no way to predict the outcome of), and you're expected to lose then spend your currency to unlock permanent upgrades to health, attack damage, starting currencies etc. A really, really, really big disappointment.
Generally the RTS combat feels fine but is ruined by frustrating battle types. Some that just encourge you to just run past instead of fighting because your massively outnumbered or enemies keep spawning in:, and spawns can feel busted with enemies spawning next to you but at the edge of the map so you can't attack properly or in the middle of your units. Also not being able to rotate the map or having a mini map for an RTS feels insane. The random choices that happen on the over-world map feel horrible unbalanced as they can just randomly take your units or half your supplies not matter your choice so a run of bad luck with minimal player input/decision can end your run. A lot of them the outcomes just feel like they just don't make sense and the dev's are trying to trick you or something. The story and writing in general is just horrible, feels like a DM who's written 200 pages of lore on his world before you have even created your character, and all of it is just cringey and trying way to hard.
Cool game, but at the point where you meet lady justice, my fps go down to 5-10, with RX 7900XTX and Ryzen 7900 X3D, so my PC is quite beefy. Couldnt win this fight cause i couldnt do anything besides watching the freeze frames. Glorious.
Idea behind the game is nice : there are very few RTT based roguelites and I am happy to see 1 more. Unfortunately, there is a reason why RTTs aren't as numerous as other genres: pathfinding and object/unit collision are difficult to do properly. And Wartorn doesn't do it properly. At least not yet. In spite of that, core of the game is good : fun & challenging fights, enough randomness to make each run distinct from the previous one. My verdict : I cautiously recommend Wartorn, but depending on how game develops, I might have to change my review to negative if developers don't fix pathfinding and collision issues. Those are not something you can ignore in an RTT.
