War Theatre: Blood of Winter is a good turn-based RTS where you take control of several different unit types to conquer a grid-based map. The game has a campaign told through partially animated characters, although the story isn't all that important here. The art style is something you either love or hate, similar to other Arcade Distillery games. It's very post-apocalypse like and mechanical, offset by strangely charming building models on the map. As for gameplay, each unit type has different abilities which lead to a complex rock-paper-scissors mechanic when it comes to facing the opponent. If you just go in blind, the AI will defeat you with ease. Each turn you earn money from controlled buildings, and you can then build new units and move existing units across the map. Combat either occurs automatically when you come in range, or you can manually start combat -- this allows you to make use of special abilities or multi-pronged attacks. Once a unit has taken full damage, it is removed. The scenarios end when the opposing (or your) commander is taken. The free game is basically just the tutorial, the rest of the missions comes in the DLC. If you like turn based strategies, give Blood of Winter a try, in my experience the free levels are a good indication of the DLC levels as well (which I have yet to finish as of writing this review).

War Theatre: Blood of Winter is a turn-based strategy RPG sequel to their War Theatre game. The graphics are pretty good but the map art lags behind the character art by a mile. The characters are well drawn while the map looks pretty bare. The soundtrack is interesting for this kind of game but keeps you at a suspense of what will happen next and the weight of your choices make a difference. Sound effects are good also, well fitting. The difficulty is balanced, it's not too hard or too easy. The game as a whole is pretty original for this genre. But, those are the only positives I could find. The controls aren't brilliant - you click to select actions and they will not usually select right meaning you have to re-select several times to perform a given action. The gameplay itself isn't particularly exciting. Nothing noteworthy. The story feels dry and borrowed from more popular sources, a lot is left unexplained leaving many questions. The length is very short - you get two choices. Either you play two short matches against AI or you try multiplayer which would be fine if multiplayer actually worked. When I click login, it tells me "the wrong login information is entered" but I know my login is correct. The replay value is next to none unless you enjoy playing the same two tiny AI games which deliver next to no content. This is usually fair enough for a game in Early Access but absolutely everything else is behind DLC. Personally, I did not enjoy this very much due to the buggy interface and disappointing multiplayer setting as well as the game not saving my stage progress meaning I have to re-do everything again when I go into the settings.
This game claims it's free to play. Maybe some aspects of it are, but the game let me do a grand total of two scenarios before it started asking me to buy stuff... the tutorial and one mission right after it that was a no-lose mission. What I mean by no-lose is that if you even remotely try you're guaranteed to win. You'd have to sit still or make all the wrong decisions or sit around and do nothing to lose. The gameplay isn't terrible but I don't really like it. It's pretty straightforward and if you figure out to use the right units versus the enemy it become almost too simple.. On PC the graphics are way too big and it looks terrible. In scenes where snow is falling in front of everything the snowflakes are too big and distracting making it hard to see what's going on. Animations are passable, and overall I like the style of graphics despite my gripes. I can't recommend this game.
As of now I wouldn't recommend this game. The fact that all the single-player content is locked behind some "DLC", and there is no one playing multiplayer this seems doomed to fail. I do like the art, I like the idea of the game. But there really wasn't much to "try" before getting locked out by what I can only assume is day 1 "DLC". But if you like to gamble, maybe the single player is good. Best of luck.
Note: Dead PvP game This game contains no meaningful single player content. There's no viably populated servers/active player population. This game cannot be played as intended.

Warning: In-Game Cash Shop This game is infested with a toxic mobile app style cash shop. You will be prompted to and expected to give money/credit card details to the developers through this cash shop to buy in-game goods so you can play the game.
This is really a typical example of everything that's wrong with the gaming industry. At face value this looks like just a poorly made handheld (PS Vita) ported eastern RPG, but it's not. It's a P2W PvP crapfest where you spend money in the mobile app like cash shop to beat other players (there are none). There's a lot of things here that are completely, utterly unethical, all of which revolve around trying to scam gamers out of money for an incomplete PS Vita game. So, "War Theatre: Blood of Winter" is a dead PvP game. Why did it fail? It's video game autopsy time! Almost every PvP exclusive game on Steam fails. Only a tiny proportion of them "go viral". This game failed for many of the same reasons those others fail. The chief of which is the developer thinking that their game will "go viral" without actually creating any reason for it do so. Competition amongst PvP centric games is extreme, and there's only a finite player base to appeal to. This game failed to reach any kind of critical mass and died as a result. Let's go into some of the reasons this particular game failed to appeal to gamers, despite the zero up front cost. First and foremost, there's no meaningful single player content. The developer gambled that other players would be an acceptable substitute for adding storytelling, level design etc to the Game. They lost that bet. Without a huge community of players or single player content to add a lasting value to the game, the game dies. Developers must learn that other players are not an acceptable substitute for adding content to a game. The developers abandoned this 5 years and 8 months ago. It will never be completed. This unfinished game is just polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuinely, completely made games. Despite not being able to finish the game, the developers apparently had all the time in the world to build that fully functional cash shop, and financial transaction back-end system into the game. That shows the developers primary goal was just to set out to gouge cash from Steam gamers just like mobile devs do with mobile peasants. Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. The graphics, specifically, are lacklustre because this was designed for the PS Vita, not gaming PCs. It's obviously not going to come close to the minimum quality standards that PC gaming enthusiasts except on their cutting edge gaming rigs. This game is fairly dated at 6 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. On the important matter of pricing and value for gamers, there's a lot going on here with monetisation, so this really shouldn't be considered a truly free product because of that. This game is infested with mobile app store like microtransactions. This is a consumer hostile model that we don't need to see on PC. It's deceptively priced to gouge gamers, and that's a reason in itself to avoid this. Even after that, you're expected to pay up $15 USD to unlock content through DLC purchases. The game should not be considered completely unlocked until you empty your wallet for the developer. This is misleading and predatory pricing on a product falsely marketed as "free". All of this monetisation slapped on a game that the developer couldn't even complete... but they had all the time in the world to build in paid DLC, a cash shop, financial back end... but no time to actually finish the game. It's obvious these guys were trying to run a cash grab hustle. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Given that this free title won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? Definitely not. This isn't worth it. I'm paraphrasing another reviewer here, but this should be a paid product... they'd have to pay people to download it.
