I was sceptical at first, but it's free so I tried it anyways. I'm very surprised with how immersive this was. It's experiences like this that reassure me that VR is the future. It literally brought a smile to my face.
This VR app is really a great start. I am a sailor, and I swear I could feel the boat moving under me. Three BIG things I'd like to see added: 1. (and most importantly) Telltales on the shrouds. That way you could really see which way the wind was blowing. It was difficult to tell if I was on a beat or on a reach. 2. Functioning main sheet to pull the boom in on a beat or let it out on a reach. 3. A binnacle or other compass arrangement so you could see your heading. Great start...I love it.

A fun diversion from yer landlubbin life, arghh A VR simulation of a sailboat, with basic controls (not that I could tell the difference), the water looks very good, and it's fun to sail in the 3 different conditions they provide. And it's free! Thanks Developer(s)!
It's surely interesting enough to give it a try and I like the water animations. The storm animations need a lot more sea foam. Also it would be nice to have the option for the boat to behave realisticly as currently the boat is fixed in its position and everything else revolves around. Played it on the rift with 2x pixel density and touch controllers.
Honestly, this feels more like a VR environment / meditation scenario. There's very little interaction (you can touch two items on the boat that do effect the boat's path and animations within the boat). Your hands do not show, only the motion controllers. You're in a sailing boat, in the middle of the ocean, with nothing to see except water all around you and the sky. There is day, night, and weather cycle you can manually try. I liked it for what it was. A nice little sailing getaway that's mostly is on auto-pilot, even if you can manipulate the direction of the boat, it is meaningless given the environment landscape never changes. You're really sailing in place. But it's a nice looking place. Nice sounds and visuals. This demo/game just makes you wish there was more to it. A sail boat race of some kind. Or a destination to reach. But if you want to get away and go nowhere, this is your app. Rating 6/10 It's free and it looks great
Played On: HTC Vive
VRSailing is just what it says it is, sailing in a virtual reality setting. You're on a sailboat, in the middle of the water, with no land, destination, or goals. It's just endless sailing across an infinite sea, though you are able to steer the boat and choose from three different weather settings; a clear sunny day, a calm ocean night, or a grey storm with churning waters. Overall, the experience is underwhelming, and you'll probably find it difficult to even spend five minutes in the game as there is not a lot to do. The steering, whatever good it may be, is shoddy at best, and the sail regularly blows right through you when the boat changes direction. For those like me who've never been on a boat, VRSailing is interesting for a minute or two, but it's ultimately a boring experience. The three orbs that allow you to change the weather settings are also very far out of reach, and those with a small standing space may not be able to take advantage of them. Though not free, for those looking for a good VR sailing experience, Regatta offers a ton of content. This "game" is rubbish. Sure, the graphics are nice, but you are on a boat sailing on an endless ocean. You can turn, but you wont notice because it looks the same in all directions. After about 1 minute, where I mostly tried to do other things (after I changed the weather), I quit. I had to run it again, just so I could write a review.
Just to be clear, this is just a simple ride-along. Nothing more. You can change the weather from moderate days, to calm nights, to stormy seas. But the water emulation is pretty bad, and there's no settings to change it to better quality. Similar to games from the late 1990's, it's very blocky, and no reflective surface to give you that feeling you're actually on the water. (Ship Simulator 2006, 2008, and Extremes had more realistic looking water, and those sims were 10 years before this one came out.) You can control the direction of the sailboat with the tiller. But that's the only control you have. (There are a couple of other moving "controls" within your reach, but they don't do anything.) There is no way to lower or raise the sail. Also, for some strange reason, it asks you to stand in a specific spot before starting. And it's always to the right of where you have your headset centred. Not sure what the purpose of that is. But when you start, it has you facing backwards anyway. So to "fix" it, you have to task switch back to your VR settings (it doesn't let you, face the wrong way, and centre your position. Then turn around and resume the game, and you'll be facing the right way. Really, this only occupied me for about 6-8 minutes, before getting bored quickly. (It took longer to write this review.) If there were more functions on the sailboat, and the water emulation looked like other games from 10 years ago, I'd play with it some more. But as it is, it's just a waste of time.
This is a cool, immersive sailing simulator. You can choose between sailing during the day, night, or in a storm. You can steer, though you're not really going anywhere. The waves move the boat realistically and greatly add to the experience. It would be nice to see a mode with calmer waters, but that's just nitpicking. When the sail swung, I thought I was about to get whacked in the head! It felt like I was really there. It was neat to sit down with my back against the wall and look out of the back of the boat. Good experience!
