Having had the opportunity to playtest the game for some hours, I have several thoughts that will help you decide whether this is a game you would like to sink some time into. Firstly - the developer through the beta playtest has been very receptive to feedback and suggestions for gameplay optimisation. This is always an encouraging start as the game has, in my opinion, a lot of potential for being a very challenging FPS leaderboard chaser. Coming from a Devil Daggers veteran POV (1100+ hours), there's a lot to be gained from comparison to that game, in terms of the gameplay loop it provides, and how Void Daggers proposes to distinguish itself from it. At the moment on that front, there's more enemies, bosses, a variation in movement tech - which is a promising start. The synthesis of Geometry Wars and Devil Daggers implies a lot of gameplay variation in terms of enemies, adaptability of gameplay and mobility. There are the beginnings of this. In terms of difficulty, there is a lot of front-heavy challenge. The first 100 seconds throws a lot of new enemies and mechanics at you all at once. However, once that hurdle is passed, there is almost breathing room until the second boss emerges. This of course, will likely change in updates ahead. One of the reasons the following section is not as challenging is that there is little in the way of 'vertical threat' - the enemies are not really attacking from an angle that requires anything beyond horizontal scanning. Once this pattern are learned, this section is not providing an escalation of challenge. In tandem with that, the upgrade process is quite fast. It is easy once the early game has been learned, to hit final upgrade before 200 seconds without much issue, making the second boss a breeze (once patterns are learned). It is a lot easier to get further faster (in a progression sense) then Devil Daggers - but this may also prove an issue with replayability. There is the tendency to get into 'spammy' territory with spawns quite quickly (by final boss, that feels like the final trick up the sleeve at this point). I believe this will likely change once the game recieves updates down the line, as well as new ways to keep it fresh (for instance, modifiers that work on their own leaderboard perhaps). At this point, it has the makings of a fun leaderboard chaser. I don't believe it is at a final balanced state where every point of the run is building on the next, introducing fresh challenges every step of the way and really rewarding the player with the sense of achievement for hitting a new benchmark. In current form, I think it hits the peak too early. I felt the same way about the first release version of Devil Daggers. It was a compromised vision with so many elements that make the game a masterpiece now, missing. I think the same applies here, and I think given that I have had discussions with the developer during the beta release window, that he is willing to push to make the game scratch the same itch that Devil Daggers does, in its own unique way. I certainly hope so!
Void Daggers is a fast-paced arena survival shooter that embraces simplicity while demanding exceptional skill from its players. Developed and published by mobx.games, the title places players inside a hostile void where survival is measured in seconds and every mistake can instantly end a run. Rather than focusing on story, exploration, or extensive progression systems, the game commits fully to delivering an intense arcade experience centered on reflexes, movement, and relentless enemy encounters. The game's strongest quality lies in its ability to create tension through minimalist design. Players begin on a solitary platform surrounded by darkness, armed only with their daggers and the determination to survive. The one-hit death mechanic ensures that every encounter feels meaningful, as even a minor lapse in concentration can erase minutes of progress. This constant pressure transforms each session into a thrilling battle for survival, encouraging players to sharpen their skills with every attempt. Combat is built around defeating enemies, collecting essence, and evolving weapons into increasingly powerful forms. As players progress through the five weapon tiers, they gain access to new attack patterns and more destructive offensive options. The weapon upgrades provide a satisfying sense of advancement without reducing the challenge, as stronger enemies continue to emerge throughout the match. Success depends not only on firepower but also on choosing the right attack style for specific situations and enemy formations. Enemy variety plays a major role in keeping gameplay engaging. The game features numerous enemy types that approach combat differently, forcing players to remain alert and adaptable. Some creatures aggressively rush the player, others attack from unexpected angles, and certain threats create additional pressure by controlling space or restricting movement. The inclusion of multiple gameplay phases and boss encounters prevents the action from becoming repetitive, as each stage introduces fresh challenges that require new strategies and faster reactions. Movement is just as important as combat. Void Daggers encourages mastery of advanced mobility techniques such as bunny hopping and aerial maneuvering, allowing skilled players to maintain momentum while avoiding overwhelming enemy swarms. These mechanics significantly raise the skill ceiling and create a rewarding learning curve. New players may initially struggle with the demanding controls, but those willing to invest time into mastering movement will discover a satisfying depth that separates the game from many other arena shooters. Visually, the game adopts a clean neon aesthetic that works remarkably well. Bright geometric enemies and glowing structures stand out against the dark backdrop, creating a distinctive atmosphere while maintaining readability during intense battles. The minimalist presentation avoids unnecessary distractions and keeps attention focused entirely on survival. Combined with the game's escalating difficulty and energetic pacing, the visual style helps establish a unique identity that feels both modern and reminiscent of classic arcade design principles. Replayability is one of the title's greatest strengths. Leaderboards, score chasing, and replay functionality encourage players to continuously improve their performance. Every defeat becomes an opportunity to learn, refine techniques, and attempt a better run. The competitive aspect adds longevity, particularly for players who enjoy comparing scores with friends or climbing global rankings. This focus on mastery gives the game an addictive quality that can keep dedicated players engaged for extended periods. While the game excels at what it sets out to achieve, its specialized nature may not appeal to everyone. Players looking for narrative content, varied environments, or extensive customization options may find the experience somewhat limited. The core objective remains survival and score improvement throughout the entire game. However, for fans of skill-based shooters and arcade-inspired challenges, this focused design is precisely what makes Void Daggers so compelling. Void Daggers successfully delivers a demanding and rewarding survival shooter experience that emphasizes precision, movement, and mastery above all else. Its combination of diverse enemy encounters, meaningful weapon progression, high-skill mobility mechanics, and competitive replay value creates a compelling gameplay loop that rewards persistence and dedication. Although its minimalist approach may narrow its audience, players who appreciate intense score-driven action will find plenty of reasons to keep returning to the void. Rating: 6/10
very interesting wireframe devil daggers i would reccomend this if youve played games similar to this genre it can feel a little clunky but its a unique expeirence that brings a little bit of that same joy that devil dagger does.. just a little
Gameplay dense Arcade inspired FPS of the Dagger-like variety A bit flawed, mainly in the central dynamic that swims up as you get better, but a lot of potential. I hope MobX keep diving deeper into real Arcade structure games. Overall a reccomendation, I even made a video where I detail my thoughts! https://youtu.be/h4w9P7RKlX8?si=tCxUL6sjjW6BtxV1
