Visions of Mana is a shell of game. It is shallow in almost every respect and gives you zero motivation in ANY of its aspects to keep playing. The best thing I can say is "It looks pretty and runs well".
Introduction
On first sight, this may look like an ARPG on the level of Granblue Fantasy Relink or even one of the "Tales of" games, which is what drew my interest into it. It does also very much try to play like these games too and have a similar over arching story to hook you in. Usually you keep playing these types of games for one of two things, the story or the gameplay. Visions of Mana fails hard in both these regards, which is likely a result of rushing this game out the door. It is worth mentioning that I only spent 9 hours with this game, waiting it for to "get good", since I held out some faith, sometimes these games just have slow starts, but it never got good and things were so horrendously shallow, I lost patience. If I ever revisit the game, I may update this review if things change.
Story
The story centers around you, the soul guard! And oh boy, will you let everyone know you are the soul guard. You guide some magical chosen people to sacrifice their lives at the Mana tree so the world doesn't explode for _mana related reasons_. That's all the overarching plot you get for the first 9 hours really, no antagonist, no conflict, no nothing. You meet 4 characters if your first 9 hours of the game, all very shallow, all very contrived as well. It feels like you should have met these characters much more slowly, with some sort of dungeon exploring them or their story. There are EXCEEDINGLY shallow attempts at this. The most comical one is when you meet the princess of some city, she must leave since she has to sacrifice herself for the _mana tree_ and oh noes, if her little brother takes the throne there's this evil cousin who will rule the city in _evil ways_, generic stuff. You resolve this conflict by wandering one map up from where you entered the city, legit jump down ONE HOLE, the evil cousin is just chilling in some watery cave. You'd think he'd sick his knights on you, but no, apparently he is friends with RANDOM ANGRY BOSS CRAB who he somehow hand waves to eat you. You stab this crabs eyes out a bit (not joking) and you're done, conflict resolved. Takes less than 45 minutes in total to do this arc, including cutscenes. This is how ALL the sub plots are handled thus far, for each character. Shallow, empty and it strongly feels like there should have been way more here, but it was obviously cut. This is the one example of the many. After this the main "hook" of the story is meant to happen I guess? Protagonist's girlfriend be like "omg, i think i do not want2die D:" so of course man comes along "ohohoho, maybe I can make you not die for MANA TWEE", she goes "oh rly 0:" so you and your gurlfren go into a remote island, telling none of your companions, walk into a ominous circle, asking absolutely no questions of this guy and oh em gee, gurlfren ded, sad music plays, protagonist scream "I TRUSTED UUUUUUU". The story earns none of this, since there's no reason to care about these characters at all, they've had some MINOR banter and if there had been just.. "more" then perhaps it'd be cliché, but it'd be _something_. The character that game ends the protagonist's girlfriend doesn't even make sense. You've met him through the story, he even shares some heartfelt details of himself, and says he picked you because "he reminds you of him and his girlfriend", so then he just randomly murders yours??? Makes zero sense, maybe it does later, but I don't care to find out. There is more that can be said here on the shallowness of the story, but I'll leave it at that.
Gameplay
So the story is snoozeville, but at least I can bonk some monsties and trigger that caveman dopamine!? (_He eagerly thought to himself_)
Exploration
The areas in this game are very pretty and nicely designed and you have almost zero reason to explore them! They make attempts by peppering chests on the map, (very few) combat shrines. But the chests are beyond disappointing, they all contain the most boring items. No exaggeration, most chests contain small amounts of money or a generic HP consumable, that's it. The painful part of this is that there is small collectibles on the map that respawn and they have a decent chance of containing... THE SAME PIECES OF CANDY YOU GET ALL YOUR CHESTS, so why am I running around the highly spread out chests on the map only to be rewarded with things that are so easily farmable from respawnable resources??? What a waste of time. Sometimes these chests contain "seeds", which, can be, vaguely interesting. I'll expand more on those later. There's also another collectible of some sort of "gew" for a special item shop. That gives... HP consumables and permanent stat raising items.. yay? This gives an attempt at some motivation to explore the map, but rewards you with almost useless or boring things, so I just wanted to just skip exploring any map and each new map was a chore to collect the chests.
Combat
Combat feels nice. Attacks feel satisfying to hit, enemies fly across the arena as you hit them, the controls are slightly clunky in some areas and that's the nicest set of things I can say. I played this game on the hardest available difficulty at the beginning and it really stresses how the AI internally runs off of two goldfish on a BBQ grill. They will constantly die, sometimes at the very start of fights 2 seconds in, they don't dodge ANYTHING. That crab boss I mentioned earlier has this big glowing red attack that attacks most the area, my two NPC's see the big red, slow, glowing area and like a cat to a laser point, THEY RUN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ARENA, get hit and insta die. Your teammates are mere suggestions in this game. You can modify their AI to prioritise defence and etc. I found this made some, but little difference and it's really down to the luck of which way your two little goldfish are facing on that BBQ grill. Beyond bad AI, each character has I think 8? Different elements they can equip, these give you new abilities, weapons and spells. They're quite interesting, all visually distinct and.. shallow. There's a single line of abilities, 12 in total, per element. You're rolling in the "points" needed to level these up, but are gated behind story to unlock more abilities and you're given them at a glacial pace. Characters without them feel utterly useless. You don't learn any spells or upgrades naturally through levelling. No way to "build" them, stuck with a simple linear combo. Now you can get "seeds" which are somewhat interesting, I guess? They can come from (rarely) chests, side quests, combat shrines etc. They can give you spells, like fireball and thunder, even heal, I got a total of those 3 in my 9 hours whoopeee! The rest of the seeds are boring stat upgrades 10% extra attack, defence etc. Sometimes something more impactful like 20% extra crit chance, but again.. boring. Again there's a basis here for something that could be great, add a bit more depth and it could be _something_. But right now, your AI companions are a mere suggestion, "seeds" are boring, you get no abilities for most characters 9 hours in, most mobs in the game just get stun locked by you infinitely and you insta-win. Bosses look nice, but are mechanically flat too.
Conclusion
Overall, this came is painfully shallow and boring. It's like the skeleton of this game was built, main idea for story, combat and etc. They implemented them and just never developed them into anything beyond minimum viable product. I recommend getting Granblue Fantasy, or any of the "Tales of" games in substitute, if you're looking for an ARPG that does these things well, or even great.

14 of 15 markets; the rest we haven't asked for this title, not markets where it is unavailable.
14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 2: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 1/day in the week to Aug 4 → 1.43/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 24 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 9 places towards #1, and the 2,404 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Visions of Mana has been a fun and campy ride. Its art style fits well with the series aesthetics styling but was definitely designed around last generation hardware unfortunately. This is a PS4 game through and through. There is a lack of modernized rendering with non-existent DLSS and Ray Tracing options. Most egregiously, you'll be met with loading screens...loading screens in a 2024 title! The combat inst phenomenal but its good enough to keep things fun. World design is pretty solid and fun to roam around, partly due to its art style. It gives the world a whimsical feel to it. The story and dialog have just been mediocre but then again, this has been an industry wide problem. I will say that many of the dialog scenes just break the game's pacing which was largely solved by other techniques in other titles from square in the past. Walk 10 steps, have a dialog cut scene, walk 10 more steps, here is another dialog cut scene. Are characters in this world not able to walk and talk at the same time? Can it all be done better? Absolutely. I wish this game had a larger budget but I feel like this was Square testing the water with an older series and so far, its delivered and enjoyable experience to me.
The actual gameplay is a blast. The entire rest of the game is a tragedy. Extremely uninspiring class changes, wide open maps sparingly populated by useless chests and sidequests with insignificant rewards, a story that would give Saturday morning cartoons secondhand embarrassment, and the worst music a Mana game has ever had. With the audacity to sell a 20 dollar "Classic BGM" dlc pack. If you do pick this game up, do yourself a favor and play straight through. Don't get distracted by all the shiny little exclamation points. Also, they seemed to be under the impression Niccolo was a cat.
Visions of Mana is not bad but unfortunately no masterpiece wait for a sale and give it a try. Just to name a couple of examples. 80% of the chests in the game are pointless and worthless. There's always just money or a healing item, rarely a weapon or something valuable in a chest. 90% of the sidequests are also just useless stuff. Money in particular is so worthless because there's nothing you have to buy, apart from the occasional weapon or armor. There are also far too few weapons in the three categories for each character, and there are also no special abilities on the weapons. So you always only choose weapons that deal a bit more damage. It's the same with armor. It's a shame that there are no accessories or multiple armor pieces. Only minimal effort was put into cosmetics, in the form of a single cosmetic DLC. In the game, you can only change clothes by changing classes, and unfortunately, they look very boring. You can't expect anything more from Square Enix. The fact that the employees who work there seem to dislike their jobs could be down to company policy, because their ideas aren't valued, or they just don't like the games they produce in general.
I recommend it if you want an improvement to Trials of Mana's gameplay. Feels more responsive and the build variety is still there. I do not recommend it if you want a good story. The story hook and drop off is right at the very beginning. Right at the introduction. I was hook and then the following 2 cutscene it drops off and starts to make you wonder wow they could have just followed through with what happened right at the beginning instead of this huge swing to happy go lucky folks cheering at there family members and neighbors being sacrificed instead of asking why. Story just continues tumbling on. Thankfully the director got picked up by SE so there is a potential for a future Mana games. The art style of Mana games have always been one of my favorites. I hope if there is another game that they will learn from this excuse of a story.
Overall a pretty satisfying JRPG. The combat and job system arent very complex, but it offers just enough spice for it to be enjoyable throughout the game. It does seem to have trouble with distributing these abilities at the right time though. Some cool ability seeds you get well past the point where they might've been useful, and the best passives each job has to offer you are locked until post game and effectively new game plus expert mode, which is kind of a bummer. By the time you get the choice to use your base job to mix and match passives and weapons to your liking to create your own unique builds, theres no reason to. Platforming is also surprisingly fun for this kind of game. The ability to do unlimited air dashes gives it an almost Mario Odyssey like feel with how you can circumvent the correct path. Story and characters are fine, not great but not terrible. If I had to describe it I would say it feels like a light PG rated Final Fantasy 10. Voice acting overall is pretty good, especially if you just got done playing Trials of Mana. Jesus, Its like hearing good voice acting for the first time again with how much of a mess that game was. Best part hands down though are its visuals. Out of all the games ive played with an anime inspired art style, this one takes the cake for being the most beautiful and its not even close. When you're standing in an open field seeing the vast landscape stretch out before you, it is absolutely GORGEOUS. Ive lost count of the amount of times I just stopped and gazed at the environment around me in awe. Every frame a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ painting man, its truly top grade stuff. I came away from this game pretty happy I experienced it. Not one of my favorite JRPG's out there, but still a good game in its own right with plenty of love put into it...Its just too bad the developers all got laid off the SAME DAY this game came out. Christ the gaming industry sucks ass.
