My gambling addict friend said if I post a review on Viral and it gets 350 likes and 150 Awards that he will buy me a case of beer and some vodka.. So I'm just gonna leave this here.
[UPDATED 5/18/2024] Initial Review and Feedback: -Right handed weapon option *Dev added -FOV option. *Dev added -Crosshair customization (mainly scaling). *Dev added ^ feels great btw ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11/2023 Update: The ** Are 5/18/2024 follow up. - Pause menu exit button should be added/changed to match the same input that takes you to it. ** Key mapping exists. However it does not close with the same key. You still have to use the menu exit option within the menu. - Game seems to be crashing a lot now and killed my good run in the Hex Plains just before the upgrade station. ** Doesn't seem to crash now - Playing on easy still as I didn't want to fully restart with the recent patch however I am noticing that enemies are quite bullet spongy and I am running out of ammo causing me to have to to restart the area. The last section of the the first level took me quite a few tries in order to get pass it. Enemies do drop ammo but the amount is very limited and usually it is not enough to succeed an area if ammo depletes. I have to play this less like an arena shooter jumping about and more out of the area let enemies come to me campy like. Update to the above: I deleted all my saves restarted completely on normal difficulty and had a significantly better time with it. I don't know what the deal was with the my 'easy' save but it definitely was not easy. The ammo thing is still an issue but not as problematic at least on normal. I noticed you changed the location of the first upgrade token, this will help new players out alot as I did miss it originally until my second run through of the game before this recent update. If this was actually 1 of the 2 secrets on the level it no longer sees it as one I think. At least on my second play through I had 1/2 secrets found. Now with my restart I have 0/2 but have both upgrade tokens. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5/18/2024 Update: Playing on easy at this time. The quality of life changes made to ammo balancing and what ammo/health killed enemies give has been a step in the right direction from what I can tell. It is so nice being able to zen out in the arenas now and not worry if I am going to have enough ammo to kill that last hand full of enemies plus having to do that flip flopping arena shooting movement style to a more campy one. I need to try this on normal again and verify that. The added music has been a great booster to the whole arena zen as well. The music fits pretty good for what this game is and the few oddities to the soundtrack make the game feel a bit more unique. Working on the new levels atm on easy and will try testing out normal mode. Will add to this later. [As for more feedback] - I remember the map screen is being developed upon aside from those changes in a future update it would also be nice to have a map key binding that is not just the pause menu. [Bugs] - Game does not launch or have option for full screen now. - Enemy info list no longer seems to work. Like it doesn't track at all. I am up to level 4 and all enemies on the list are still opaque with no data. - I ran into a glitch on level 3 where I died and upon reloading the UI showed my skill points at 0 instead of 4. I still had the points unused but it was not displaying it correctly. Also some of the areas do no show an enemy count. The areas that do work are only the caged arena fights. I understand this likely is intended to only work in these sections so this is more of a heads up just in case it was not intended.

You are a firewall program, inside of a computer, trying to fight off an invading virus in VIRAL by Jitterware, a first-person shooter (FPS) programmed with the Unity development platform. FPS games have come a long way since the days of Wolfenstein 3D & Doom (the original one). With true polygon room-over-room architecture and polygon-based enemies, any setting can be rendered, any weapon created and any enemy realized so long as you have the proper expertise in order to create them. VIRAL displays its production values early on, giving the player a short intro even before the title appears, much like that of a movie from a major motion picture studio. The intro is impressive and the setting reminds older gamers of another FPS game, TRON 2.0, which was based upon the movie "Tron." That game (and the movie that it was based upon) is also set inside of a computer and even shares a vaguely similar plot where the player must ultimately defeat programs turned violently psychotic because of a virus. Despite having a similar setting and plot, though, the two FPS games have some stark differences. VIRAL trends more towards being what is called an "Arena shooter," which is where the player is constantly challenged by mobs of enemies in an open area that the player can't retreat from. Modern FPS games tend to be less story- and adventure-based and more action-oriented for which "arena shooters" are better suited. Beyond the pre-title introduction scene and another introduction scene once you start the game, there isn't a whole lot of story or explanation that you are given. You are the hero, here's your weapon, now go kill the enemy. A lack of story isn't horrible all by itself; Quake (now known as Quake 1 because of its sequels) had a plot that could be scrawled onto the back of a business card and, with all due respect to its critics, it did quite well for itself in terms of sales. Yet VIRAL also doesn't explain a lot about itself which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. You, as the firewall program, should know what enemies ought to look like. You, the player, however, are being introduced into this environment for the first time. As a result, it's sort of confusing when encountering enemies for the first time because... Quite frankly, as a firewall program, I ought to know what they should look like. Was I programmed and compiled yesterday? It would have been nice to have had some type of cutscene to introduce a new enemy so that the player can think to themselves, 'Oh, OK. That's an enemy. Kill that when I see it.' An example of not informing the player of what an enemy is in an abstract environment is that, at one point, I walked into a large open area and saw something in the distance. Having been blindsided twice before by things that introduced themselves as enemies only after firing at you, I fired at it. 'It' turned out to be some sort of power-up that you had to get to by using a double-jump mechanic that you eventually earn. When you don't know what exactly enemies look like, you begin to shoot at everything that doesn't look like architecture which wastes precious ammunition (as well as time). Being an "arena shooter"-styled FPS game, I wasn't surprised that the standard movement speed was very fast with sensitive controls. When mobs of enemies are both moving towards you and firing at you, meandering along will not suffice in staying alive. And VIRAL makes it's arena shooter ambitions known early on; After a few short hallway-and-room segments, you are placed into an open-air arena with enemies set loose against you. In this computer, guardrails have yet to be programmed in so try not fall over the edge into digital oblivion. And, from there, it seems, the game gets into a habit of luring you into a new area only to spring more enemies upon you all of a sudden. Enjoy exercising all of those bunny-hopping (constantly jumping) and circle-strafing (moving in a circle while always looking at and firing upon your enemy) muscles of yours that may have atrophied over time. And don't run out of ammo. I'm not good at arena shooters, bunny-hopping or circle-strafing. I can do them when I absolutely have to but I prefer to enjoy my FPS experiences rather than have them be a constant mushy blur of hectic motion. I understand the gamer sentiment of "git gud"; I also understand that there's no point in wasting time on a game that is neither your style nor friendly to those who accidentally straggle in. I can't recommend VIRAL overall despite many of its positive traits. It certainly has sufficient production values and has perfectly adequate sound effects and textures to fit its setting. Yet it's the sum of its deficiencies that needs to be addressed; While there's nothing wrong with being an arena shooter, having abstract-looking enemies or next-to-no explanation of things, the sum of these facets really limits a typical gamer's ability to enjoy the game. If you enjoy arena shooters then you'll fit right in. Even if you do enjoy arena shooters, I would recommend that the developer have an additional cut scene having early enemies destroy something or kill someone so that the player can be shown that these are enemies. Yes, veteran players will shoot at everything and anything but not everyone is a 'veteran player.' If the developer is proficient enough to have a pre-title intro then they should consider additional cut scenes to provide for some additional explanation. I wish the developer all the best with their game (it was still in 'Early Access' as of this writing) and I hope, for their benefit, that it really does go 'viral.' However, I personally prefer my FPS experiences to be less hectic.

I hate how all of those cheap doom shooters have no idea how to redistirbute damage on any difficulty , you have 100hp but on easy difficulty enemies deal 25hp dmg per shot , now imagine higher difficulties.
"Viral" is a first person arena shooter (vs bots, not PvP) that I think was intended to have a bit more narrative than it does... sure, PvP arena shooters don't have content, but players are content, right? (Of course they're not)... but what if you had an arena shooter without content and without players? Then you have "Viral". Bonus: It's already abandoned. What do you do in the game? Shoot bots in a variety of hand crafted levels. The developers abandoned this 1 year and 1 month ago. It will never be completed. This unfinished game is just polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuinely, completely made games. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. Before I get too far into it, I think it's evident none of the graphical assets here are flips, this is genuine hand crafted stuff.. not great, sure, but genuine. In the "free" game section of Steam, this is incredibly rare and I think some kudos needs to go to the developer for doing the right thing and not trying to pass off other people's game assets as their own. While it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.

Pretty good for an indie game in Early Access. Pros -Music -Game play (Never crashed) -Battle arenas were unique and stylish -Enemies were original and had really interesting attack patterns -Weapons were nice (Love the Hysteresis Cannon) -I liked the level design. The artwork was decent. Cons -Story sucked -The game is not complete. There are only 8 levels (for now...) -Only 6 weapons (so far...). Too few for my liking. -There is some kind of bug with the music. Sometimes it plays 2 songs overlapping one another and it sounds terrible. -No way to line up your shot. Usually you can use the shift button to bring your weapon to the centre of the screen for a precise shot. This game doesn't have that. You just shoot whenever something is in your cross hairs. The aim is precise, but I'm used to lining my shot up.
