Nice fun little adventure
A short-but-sweet sidescroller with a stellar artstyle. I love the colors chosen. It's sticks to purples and reds, yet everything is visually distinct.
Fun and polished enough for the asking price, and the art is especially good. There are some oddities, such as all enemies having contact damage or ripostes dealing damage in an area, but nothing really annoying. On the other hand, there are some small details that greatly enhance gameplay, such as certain attacks having multiple hitboxes with different damage values (getting hit by a skull flying towards you hurts less than dodging into the same skull's bite animation, for example).
Sound level all over the place. Even the smallest touch of a small trap instantly resets your progress for no reason despite character haveing a health bar.
Good job on the game, keep it up!
This game isn't perfect -and beyond the relevance of that statement to its core philosophy- has a few flaws (from tiny bugs to clunky parts) that dampen the experience a bit (especially in the final fight, which has so much potential but ends up being just ok because of a few things I won't say to avoid spoiling). Nonetheless, it is a gorgeous piece of art that shines bright through its art-style and philosophy, that still offers a fun experience with some pretty neat fights! Highly recommended, give the dev some love, we need more independent works like this!
I do give this game a THUMBS UP. ★★★☆☆ FAIR WARNING: the game fully breaks the fourth wall at the end and abandons the fantasy narrative in favor of a meta message from the developer. If you’re expecting a traditional story-driven fantasy adventure with a clean narrative payoff, this may feel disappointing or even jarring. Some will appreciate the honesty, but others may wish the game had stayed in its world. Anyway, on to my review. Keep in mind I did enjoy this game. I'm just being honest but absolutely respect and love the developers creative vision here. Just keep this all in mind before buying. Vindilis is a very entertaining short experience, clocking in at around 2–3 hours. At its core, it tells a classic revenge story: you awaken in a cell and venture out to defeat a series of bosses. The writing itself is solid, but the narrative feels somewhat underdeveloped. There is an overarching message at the end (see above). One that may not land well with every player. While I understand what the developer was going for, I personally found the ending a bit disappointing. ADHD at it's finest ;-) Putting story aside, the art direction is where Vindilis truly shines. Each level is beautifully crafted with incredible attention to detail. I especially appreciate how the platforms blend naturally into the environment instead of feeling like floating chunks of land, which is something a lot of games fall into. The hand-drawn art is gorgeous, the animations are fluid, and the overall presentation has a gritty charm that feels well polished. That said, the levels are very short. I found myself wishing for a bit more variety... some puzzles, gauntlet-style rooms, side paths, or additional exploration and rewards. Whether this is a negative really depends on expectations. Vindilis often feels more like a boss battler with light exploration rather than a full adventure. If you’re looking for deep exploration, this may disappoint. If you’re here for creative boss fights, the game delivers. Because the game is so short and heavily focused on bosses, I actually wish it had been much more challenging. With only five (or was it six) bosses, increasing the difficulty could have made each victory feel more rewarding and significantly extended the game’s lifespan. A difficulty setting and/or a New Game+ mode would go a long way toward improving replayability. And then there's combat... Combat is decent but could have used more depth. You have a dodge and parry system, with parries leading into a satisfying high-damage attack. Outside of that, combat is fairly basic with light and heavy attacks. There are no combos, air slashes, or downward strikes. Given the game’s short length, adding a few more mechanics (charged attacks, aerial options, magic/ranged abilities, or simple combos) could have helped the combat feel more engaging and memorable. That said, it’s clear the developer knows exactly what they’re doing. There’s real talent here. I truly hope that one day this same passion is poured into a full-fledged adventure with a deeper story and richer lore, because that game could be something genuinely special.
