this game rocks!! it's playable (but still challenging) for a n00b like me but the skill ceiling is huge and the leaderboard is super motivating! i love that there's no boring narrative to mash through, this game skips straight to the good stuff: exploding monsters with my magic hands! im not rly a vr person but this played great on my steamdeck. highly recommend :)
I just got the Vex Mage game tonight, and played nearly an hour before I even thought about getting my VR headset out. The 2D Screen was very fun. I can't wait to try the VR version, I will totally be wiping out the aliens!
Very fun fast paced game to play with friends.
Amazing, a total blast to play. Words fail at describing the feeling that playing this in VR gives. For the price, this is a must own for VR players and still worth checking out for fans of arena shooters
I actually enjoying this sleeper hit! Awesome controls, fast paced and beautiful graphics. This game needs more eyes on it. You wont regret it you buy it. 5/5
Prepare the Dramamine! Arena shooter but in VR. I said it while playing, "this is a decent arena shooter but being in VR gives it that extra oomf." The spell system is fun messing around with the different combination even if my favorite just ended up being the dual crystal streams. My biggest gripe just seems to be a feature of the game: the arenas are too small and it is way to easy to just slide off the map to your death. VR doesn't quite have the same movement as mouse and keyboard so the precise jumping is a lot harder to pull of which caused a few of my runs to end rather quickly. The camera can be a little wonky but that might have been my own issue after changing settings around.
English 🎮 It was a bit challenging for me at first, but I really enjoyed it. If my Quest 3 battery hadn’t died, I honestly wouldn’t have noticed how much time had passed — I was completely immersed in the game. The intense action and atmosphere gave me serious Doom Eternal vibes, which made the experience even more exciting. VEX MAGE is a relentless, high-adrenaline arena action game that channels the spirit of classic twitch shooters through the lens of magical combat. Developed by Nervous Systems and published by Fast Travel Games, it replaces conventional firearms with raw elemental power, asking players to survive brutal arenas using speed, spatial awareness, and mastery over spell combinations. From the first moments, the game makes its intentions clear: standing still is death, hesitation is punished, and momentum is everything. At the heart of VEX MAGE is its dual-hand spellcasting system, which defines nearly every moment of play. Players equip different elemental runes—such as fire, lightning, or other arcane forces—to each hand, and these choices dramatically affect how combat unfolds. Spells can be cast independently, charged together for amplified effects, or rapidly swapped mid-fight, creating a constant mental load that runs parallel to the physical challenge of dodging enemies. This system encourages experimentation, as discovering powerful synergies between elements can completely reshape a run. Combat quickly becomes a rhythmic loop of movement, casting, repositioning, and adapting on the fly. Arena design reinforces this intensity. Environments are compact and intentionally claustrophobic, funneling enemies toward the player from multiple directions while offering just enough space to maneuver if movement is precise. Enemy variety plays a major role in sustaining pressure, with different foes demanding different responses—some rush aggressively, others teleport or attack from range, and many are designed to punish tunnel vision. The game frequently layers time pressure on top of enemy waves, forcing players not only to survive but to move decisively toward objectives before conditions become overwhelming. Visually, VEX MAGE embraces a stark, stylized fantasy aesthetic that prioritizes clarity over realism. Spell effects are bold and readable, enemy silhouettes stand out clearly against their surroundings, and lighting is used to guide attention during chaotic encounters. While some background assets are intentionally minimal, this restraint helps ensure that the screen remains legible even when dozens of threats and effects are active at once. The audiovisual presentation supports the game’s core philosophy: everything exists to serve fast, readable combat. Difficulty scaling is aggressive but deliberate. Early encounters introduce mechanics clearly, but the game ramps up quickly, demanding mastery rather than mere familiarity. Success depends on learning enemy behaviors, optimizing spell combinations, and developing strong movement habits. This makes VEX MAGE deeply rewarding for players who enjoy skill-based improvement, but it also means the experience can feel punishing for newcomers. There is little hand-holding, and failure is treated as a learning tool rather than something to be softened or avoided. Replayability is a major strength. The combination of score chasing, run-based progression, and variable spell loadouts ensures that no two sessions feel identical. Cooperative play adds another layer, allowing small groups to tackle arenas together and combine elemental effects in unpredictable ways. While co-op introduces moments of chaos and coordination challenges, it also amplifies the game’s sense of spectacle and experimentation, making teamwork both exhilarating and risky. Narrative elements are intentionally sparse. Rather than telling a detailed story, VEX MAGE relies on atmosphere, enemy design, and abstract progression to create context. This choice keeps the focus squarely on action and mastery, aligning the game more closely with classic arcade design than modern story-driven experiences. Players looking for lore-heavy content may find this approach minimal, but those drawn to pure gameplay will appreciate the lack of distractions. There are some limitations worth noting. The intensity of movement and constant motion can be demanding, particularly for players sensitive to fast-paced first-person action or VR locomotion. Comfort options are limited, and extended sessions may feel physically taxing. Additionally, while the core mechanics are strong, players seeking long-term variety may eventually wish for more arena types or enemy behaviors to further expand the game’s already solid foundation. Overall, VEX MAGE succeeds as a focused, uncompromising action experience that rewards precision, experimentation, and endurance. It doesn’t attempt to broaden its appeal through accessibility or narrative depth; instead, it doubles down on speed, pressure, and mechanical expression. For fans of arena shooters, spell-based combat, and high-skill gameplay loops, it delivers a visceral and memorable experience that thrives on challenge and mastery rather than comfort. Rating: 7/10
Very cool devil daggers-ish game with some fun spell varieties and satisfying combat flow. Even better is the fact that it has co-op multiplayer which isn't something I see very often for games in this niche. The overall game is pretty short but there's a lot of replayability and also VR support as well though I haven't tried it myself. Not very many bugs to speak of either and performance is pretty good on my machine. Only real complaint is that a few of the textures (particularly the magma level) have a little bit of the AI-generated look but it could just be a result of the chosen art style. Not really a deal-breaker I guess but it does look kinda rough. Overall I think this is a great game and among the best co-op arena shooters I've seen. P.S. Please lower the electric spell's charge time or buff the damage. I like the spell but its DPS ends up falling pretty short of some of the other spells and there's also the chance that you miss entirely and have to charge it up again.
Momentum! Very fun to get a bunch of momentum. Fun elemental combinations. Can't wait to see it with the new Steam Frame and multiplayer!
