https://youtu.be/BdVk70q-N1E Until the End is a charming heartfelt visual novel that conveys a heavy context with simplistic graphics. You’ll follow recent nurse graduate Zoe as she starts her job in the palliative care unit at Montagne Institute. This is no simple read and click by any means; all your choices matter here in this medical sim, so be mindful of the information provided, how you react and what you say. I highly recommend you have something to write on, something to write with and a box of tissues as you progress through the game. The pixel graphics add to the overall charm of the game as each character, location and environment is unique and stunning. The music on the other hand can be quite cumbersome as sometimes it seems out of place or too loud for the events that are happening. The UI is minimalistic, you can find it in the bottom right hand of the screen should you need to pause, save, load or anything else. I highly recommend picking up this experience. I personally only covered the first day of Zoe’s career in my video, but I found myself getting somewhat emotional about the events that took place. Being responsible for someone at the end of their life is a tough task and this will take you into that world if you are willing to let yourself become the character. Be kind. Be thoughtful. But most importantly embrace the trip, for you never know when it will end…
The idea of the game is very promising, the idea of being in the shoes of a palliative nurse making important decisions that would influence the game really appeals to me. However, I am assuming that this game is made by a single developer or a small team, because the story is extremely short. There is little decision making involved that properly influences the game and the total run time is about 1 hour, basically making the game an interactive short story. The game at points feels unfinished due to odd bits of untranslated dialogue and the introduction of characters and mechanics that are barely used in the short gameplay. Who is Jean? We never get a patient file on him or any information other than a singular introduction between the characters towards the end. I was left feeling disappointed at how quickly the game to an end, especially after promising so much, with the tutorial hinting at needing to write notes down about patient files and needing to make quick decisions that would impact the story. Perhaps I have been unlucky with my two playthroughs and got the two endings that cut the story short, but the game definitely feels half finished, and for the most part, the path of the plot seems to remain unchanged by choices you make, such as reading a specific book or deciding to (SPOILER) kiss Rose or not. I am aware that when I am writing this the game only came out a week ago more or less, so perhaps my criticisms are just growing pains that will be improved upon as the game gets patched. Nevertheless, at the moment I would not spend the 4 odd pounds on the game at this moment. Again, an excellent concept, just undeveloped at the moment.
I'm only two days in (IG) and I absolutely love this game. The patients are endearing and have their own specificities, without falling into the crude cliché. We learn the basics of how palliative care works, but the game does not overwhelm us with information. I already have my favourites! i'll edit this comment when I'll be finished with the game.
EDIT: I have changed my review to do not recommend as it has been a decent amount of time since launch with no updates or any public statement about the future of the game. The game is very expensive for what you get. Until The End is a unique visual novel, and it provides an experience which is hard to put into words. For those who also started with the Demo first, the game is a LOT more complete, and things such as the title screen etc have been made. I appreciate how the dev sought assistance from a irl palliative care nurse when writing for the visual novel, it's is noted and appreciated as it makes the experience a lot closer to home. There is definitely a lot of repeatability to the game, as every option you make changes the course of events. I think it'd be great if achievements were added to the game, especially ones from when you reach an ending, as it isn't made clear just how many endings it is possible to get. I can appreciate the game has been out for only 8 days, so I won't be too harsh. I think for the future it would be great for more patient interaction and decision making to be added to the game. From mid game onwards it seemed to rush pretty fast, and the "liking Zoe" system didn't really seem to have any importance or significance to the gameplay. Around the mid game there is a portion of text that isn't translated, and the introduction of a character whom we never learn anything about. I got the
Pscyho Laurius
ending and it really felt like it went from 0-100 and then boom the game was over.
really nice stuff
I am interested in the point of hospice/palliative care and also games about being a mortician/autopsy but the ending i got was "psycho zoe" Witch is one i hated because i wanted to help people live a painless death and be resuscitated if needed i liked the story but it could use improvement
gameplay is a bit slow, alot of dialogue to click through and not a lot of things to do. more of a visual novel. alix is kind of patronizing and annoying, she pissed me off
