You like big Guns? You like shooting your Way through hundrets of Enemies? You like Bombing everything away that comes insight? You like your Enemies hearing you coming in a distance from over 1000 Yards? Wanna be like RAMBO? Then you are wrong here. Sorry. Here you will only have a Katana and your Skills. You can be like SNAKE EYES! Come on, thats the cool Ninja from the G.I. JOE Series. BUT you have hundrets of Enemies! Welcome to UNSHADED! Somewhere in a dark Future, in a World ruled by Corporations, plagued by corrupt Police and Gang Wars you, the mysterious Fiend, are hired by one Corporation to test new Technology. Thats also your Chance to clean this World from the Scum that infested it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2555574634 UNSHADED is a very cool and bloody Retrogame. Instead of shooting your way through your Enemies, you have to use Tactics to get past them. Each of them is marked at the Border, so you have a clue where they are. Your Enemies have Directions they are looking and moving. You can overcome each of them attacking from the Back, killing them. Instant! And you will need to, because if an Enemy sees you, you have to fight and then you loose Energy and you have only one Life. You can replay every Level but inside you have just one Life. And that can be also loose by walking on Mines or beeing shot. So , be careful. Each Level has much opportunities for hiding and getting back in Stealth Mode, after beeing spotted. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2555575118 Finishing Levels will give you a Score. The better you are, the more Points you get, which is necessery to unlock Skills that will help you mastering all the Levels. The Game is starting easy, showing you how to proceed. Your getting Missions like killing or bombing something. It can be also to get or reach something. The Levels (100!) are getting bigger and bigger and more challenging the farer you come. Challenging but never unfair. Everytime i died it was my own fault not beeing attentive enough. There is also a little but exciting Story included that continues via Dialog between the Actors of this Game. Learn about your Fiend and his Motivations. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2555575454 The Graphics are wonderfull Old School, while some parts look really modern, like big explosions and yes this Game has R-Rated Content, the Stealth Killing ist really brutal but typical Pixel Style. The Sounds and Music fit perfectly in and all together you have a really fun and addicting Game. It has the legendary "Just one more Level" addicting Effect. To be honest, normally i don´t like Stealth Games, i like the directly Way. Fire and Forget. But very suprisly i have very much fun with this One and i have to give the Developer a very, very big Thanks for taking me into a Cyberninja Costume for this one. Thanks. And thank YOU for Reading. Amazing old style graphics and animation design , brings me faar back in time. I loved the Stealth elements, the music and how the AI enters in it's own traps and explodes into pieces. I definetely recommend the game , and guarantee that you will enjoy playing it and listening to some nice music in the main menu and between the levels. The developer did amazing job ! I can suggest a few things that possibly can be changed for the game: 1. The Cutscenes UI is too big and there are some grammar mistakes but this can be fixed. (For example UI for the conversations can be put down at the bottom and as background the portal on the other side : base, corporation office or whatever suits it ^^) 2. Adding more levels will be a big plus, as it gets harder up in the chain, or maybe second stage with another 100 levels , who knows what awaits in the future!
Its a shame this game seems be so underground, at least from judging the amount of reviews. This game has some of the best stealth action I've seen since Mark of the Ninja. There's so many interesting tools to abilities and the AI acts pretty dynamically so as a result you can have levels play out in different ways even if you use the same tools. When you get in the zone it's really fun to rack up a high combo and pull off moves you'd see in some anime action scene. My only criticism is that the game feels a bit bloated with 100 levels, I had to take a break for a few months before completing the second half of the game. Things will start to feel samey and repetitive even with the dynamic AI and tools. I do appreciate that we got 100 levels, I think it would be better if some of those levels were moved to a bonus level section so the pacing of the main story feels better.
Unshaded is a 2D retro pixel top down shooter/brawler that's been slapped together with the godawful GameMaker Studio video game construction kit from Yoyogames. It's got a sci-fi robot samurai/katana theme and a loose story. Encouragingly, this is not just a lame asset flip, but a sincere attempt at making a video game, with a story and plot revealed through text at the beginning of each level. Unfortunately the technical execution is lacking. Gameplay is lacking polish and very clunky, you can't even swing away madly at enemies, you need to click on them exactly right... it's an uncomfortable game style that doesn't work well, and is deeply unsatisfying. Like most GameMaker Studio construction kit "games", this features lazy 2D retro pixel "art", instead of professionally done, contemporary PC graphics. Controls and resolution are locked, which pushes this below acceptable standards for PC. GameMaker Studio is a very poor quality game construction kit, and unsurprisingly results in products that have little to no value as games, especially when compared to the work of professional developers who create genuine products for gamers. Using a video game construction kit requires little to no talent or skill as a game developer. Very often, GameMaker Studio is used to make shovelware and lazy cash grabs, but this does come across as a genuine attempt to make a game. It's a shame you can't turn a sows ear into a silk purse.
The game itself has some fun stealth elements, an overall great character and animation design reminiscent of old games I used to play in the web, and a very creative and well inspired work. Although not without its flaws, these aforementioned flaws are rather insignificant and do not have any lasting impact towards the gameplay and core mechanics of the game like some very small grammar issues during some cutscenes and a slightly overlapping UI. As such, with some additional love and support, I really believe this game can be further polished and improved in terms of gameplay and the entirety of its elements and other existing ideas. The game shows potential and I believe it has the ability to reach that peak. Overall an 8.5/10. Would recommend with the addition that it can also run just well on, let's just say, some less than desirable "gaming setups".
I could practically HEAR the camera begging to be player-controlled, with its erratic zooming in and out. However, if you can get past this glaring issue, Unshaded has a fantastic stealth experience to offer. The game really opens up once you've unlocked the first couple of skills. I loved using the 'grapple knife' to snatch enemies off patrol and into the shadows where I could quietly finish them off. I also enjoyed later missions where more challenging foes appeared, like the Hunters, who have no set patrol paths and are very difficult to kill. Acquiring new suits makes it possible to have bigger inventories, be less visible in the shadows or even turn enemies to ash when killed, and I had a great time in particular with the last one. In each mission, you can kill everyone or no-one, use a range of gadgets to sneak past, disable or destroy your foes (both organic and robotic) and complete basic objectives. The general flavour is search-and-destroy. If you're clever, you can use combinations of chain-kills and golden pick-ups to build score multipliers, while remaining undetected. I had a good time figuring each level out, but 100 missions with very similar environments and objectives is probably more than most people could want. While combat is a thing, the emphasis is definitely on stealth. If you get spotted by multiple enemies, it's usually certain death. It's a flawed game, but you can tell Unshaded was built with a lot of care for presentation. All the weapons are very satisfying to use; the sound design is excellent and the animations really sell the grisliness of each kill. Again, I recommend the game, as long as you know the camera is a bit of a mess. You'll need to get used to relying on the UI indicators to understand when enemies are closing in.
Well designed and soft gameplay, not really struggling player to piss off, I played Pixel Shinobi and for an one man developer such an admirable effort, waiting for the next titles. Keep it up Ametist.
Game Received for free by Steam Curator Review Unshaded is a great effort from seems to have been developed and designed by one person (other than the soundtrack). Its lacks polish, and few tweaks could really improve the experience, but it offers a substantial gameplay, plenty of replayability for those who are interested in getting perfect ranks and a real challenge for those who are chasing 100% achievements. If you like stealth games and don’t mind limited graphics options (or games made in gamemaker) then I would recommend giving this a go. It took me just under 10 hours to get through all 100 missions, so for its going price it doesn’t seem too bad. Story You are kind of just dumped into the game and the story is slowly told to you between each mission, and has you playing the role of a Ninja who is out for revenge. Any more would wreck the plot and require heavy spoilers. The English translations (as well as mission objectives) occasionally suffer a bit of broken English and could use a bit of cleaning up, but otherwise it’s understandable and easy to follow. Gameplay Gameplay is surprisingly good. Each mission has different objectives, from killing certain targets, finding briefcases, blowing up objects or hacking computers, and requires a different approach before trying to escape the level. The harder levels might have multiples of each to accomplish before escaping. You can’t take you time, as hunters (super tough enemies that kill you easily) appear after a set time period. You can move in any direction, and try to either sneak past the multiple patrolling guards or cut down those who are in front of you. Guards have a limited 90 degree field of view (FOV) and go into an alert mode if they find a killed companion (which has them randomly searching for you and they can see you hiding in shadows). Killing them from outside their FOV results in an instant kill, though you can be spotted by other guards. You generally want to stay away from combat, and kill enemies from the shadows or sneaking up behind them. You can break boxes (which alerts enemies in a set radius) for the potential to pick up 1 use items, from kuni (throwing knives), bombs, health kits, grenades, mines and other items. Unfortunately, there’s no menu or manual that advises you of what items actually do or are, so you have to try using them and remember for next time. Most items don’t carry across through the stages (though the Kuni do) so there’s no point being stingy with their use. Every stage has a collectable (guarded by tougher enemies), and you are scored based on how many times you were seen, how many enemies you killed, and on how much gold you collected in the stage. Some stages also have hidden secrets to find. You have the option of playing with different Ninja suits once you meet the criteria to unlock them, and all of them offer bonuses and disadvantages to mix up gameplay. You also unlock abilities (like a harpoon to drag enemies to you for silent killing, invisibility, teleporting and a rapid blade attack) as you progress. Graphics Unshaded’s graphics are good but could use some improvements and additional options. The game is isometric and the stages make good use of areas you can’t see to place traps that kill you to add that WTF moment when you die. Each of the stages are well constructed, and some of the later stages are devilish in their design. The actual stages flick between 2 types of graphic- park and wood and bunker until around 70 where a 3rd is added (with see through walls to make hiding harder). If pixelated graphics aren’t your thing, then then you will need to look elsewhere. It only supports 1080P as its max resolution so on 4K monitors the pixilation become more noticeable, however there is an option to run in a window to get it looking as it was intended. The games font also isn’t easy on the eyes (which is how all the story unfolds and mission objectives are displayed). The camera also has an annoying habit of zooming in and out at the most unfortunate times, it would be good if you could set it to stay zoomed out, or at least control it. Each of the enemies are easily recognisable which greatly helps when determining a path through the stages, and the death animations are executed well (as is the blood splatter). Music I thought the soundtrack was good and the tunes didn’t overshadow the action and just pumps away in the background. I couldn’t advise if the stages had different music or played the same track, but I didn’t mind it. A lot of the sound effects were good, with the guns (especially the fixed sentry guns) sounding grunty. There isn’t any voice acting (other than grunts when enemies are killed). Achievements If you are aiming for 100% achievements, then it’s going to be tough as one of them requires you to complete all missions with a S Rank. That will likely be the achievement that breaks most people going for it. For more reviews please visit https://store.steampowered.com/curator/31327216/
I'll update this as I go, but basically, a top-down stealth game that may not be super polished but has plenty of challenge and encourages high-skill play, with some endearingly eurojank cutscenes and animated avatars that actually aren't bad to look at. I'm not sure how sharp the learning curve is but it doesn't seem that unforgiving so far (~30 missions or so), but it very barely holds your hand through it; e.g. if you mess up tossing a bomb at a target generator, you'll have to restart if you don't have enough, but most of the early levels are fairly short. How item storage works is a bit quirky, as you get some upon completing missions a lot of the time but I think you can also grab new ones in the missions themselves whenever you play and finish them. The hunters are quite a curveball when you first run into them, and you have to learn how they work the hard way if you're not lucky. It's an interesting game as far as being something I haven't played of its type much before.
