About

Yuel’s life is stagnating.
He’s twenty-one years old, in his third and final year of university, but his interest in his subject is waning and he doesn’t have any friends to confide in. His days are dull and uninteresting, and he longs for something to break up the monotony of his unremarkable routine – at least, until his father dies.
Unsure of how to cope with this news, Yuel’s mental health collapses. Not knowing who to turn to during such a tumultuous time, he eventually decides to ask his cool and competent older cousin, Tavi, for help.
Tavi is effortlessly cheerful where Yuel is awkwardly withdrawn; outgoing and confident where Yuel is shy and self-conscious; flippant and irreverent where Yuel is stern and serious.
Tavi takes it upon himself, after seeing the state of his younger cousin, to cheer Yuel up to the best of his abilities. Yuel, however, is unaccustomed to kindness, and his feelings for Tavi soon become startlingly sensuous.
Yuel’s life is hard enough as it is, what with his turbulent childhood, his non-existent social life, and now his father’s sudden death, but this pushes things to a tipping point. What in the world is he going to do now, after falling in love with his own older cousin?

This story also depicts a consensual romantic relationship between a pair of first cousins. You might want to steer clear of this story if this subject matter would perturb you.

Unluckily in Love is a kinetic visual novel (linear, no choices) about two troubled cousins and their relationship changing into something more than cousins. If you are not capable of handling incest content then you probably shouldn't get the free adult patch. Anyway, the younger cousin is named Yuel and he is a scrawny, socially awkward nerd who has been under the shadow and pressure of his father for all of his life. Suddenly, his wealthy but distant father dies and Yuel is thrown for a loop trying to keep himself intact. He doesn't have any friends or any social skills since he devoted most of his life to studying to appease his father. The other cousin is the older and flirtatious Tavi who is one of the few, if not the only person, who tries to help Yuel. Although Tavi himself isn't a paragon or a role model himself, he is a f*ck boy who likes to sleep his problems away with anyone hot enough. He can't even be bothered to remember any of their names. Despite all of this, he holds a soft spot for his younger cousin and tries his best even when Yuel is being a drama queen. I will warn you that this visual novel is a long slow burn so expect it to take several hours at least to get to the good stuff if you're reading all of the dialogue. Otherwise, I highly recommend this as the story manages to build Yuel and Tavi's character to be human and with flaws to make that slow burn worth it. The adult patch makes it even hotter too, just letting you know.
Unluckily in Love is a boys love visual novel by Ebi-hime, a writer I've had mixed feelings about, but can't seem to get away from. The main couple are two men named Yuel and Tavi, and they're cousins. Not only are they cousins, but Tavi doesn't shut up about how much he loves his baby cousin. I get a little bit of ick from it, but I found out there are 3 other visual novels by Ebi-hime about the same couple, so these two characters are clearly very dear to her. And I'm writing a sci-fi drama about clones in love, so those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. She loves this couple enough to write about them 4 times, and it turns out I've already bought 3 of them, so I better get used to this couple if I wanna finish my backlog. So, if fictional incest gives you too much of the ick, don't read this one, or To Have and To Hold, or All Idleness and Ephemera. They all feature the same two characters, coming together in alternate realities, but I think they're cousins in every single one. Ebi-hime clearly has a thing for it, and I'm in no position to shame her for it. Yuel is a kicked puppy in every sense of the word. He has faced a backstory full of abuse and neglect, and doesn't try to hide it from anyone. So when Tavi actually treats him like a human being and takes care of him when he's in a sad state, obviously he catches feels for Tavi. Tavi is a scoundrel. My god. Supposedly he changes his ways for Yuel, but I'm not convinced he's not still a scoundrel. But ♥♥♥♥ can't not be ♥♥♥♥♥ when these sorts of story lines are involved. But MAN! Tavi was a scum bag before he started taking care of Yuel. Maybe Yuel makes him a better person, or Yuel is the one magical exception to his scoundrel ways. About a year after Unluckily in Love came out, Ebi-hime added bonus content, and OH MY GOD! She's a NekoPara fan too! Her nods to the successful VN line are as subtle as a hammer to the head. I like that kind of subtlety though, it's my favorite kind. In a loving homage to the catgirl maids, Yuel grows cat ears and a tail, and Tavi talks him into wearing a maid outfit. Not gonna lie, it's pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ funny. Still doesn't convince me that Tavi is less of a scoundrel though... Anyways, I own 2 more VNs with these two, so expect to see more of them in the future.
I'm a slow reader, so it took me twice as long to read through than the estimated hour count, though I enjoyed it a lot. Things start off a bit slow, but the build-up and slow burn are all part of the charm, and make things feel more realistic when they do get going. This story has a nice mix of slice of life, angst, fluff, and some very fun banter between the characters. Especially some of Tavi's lines are outright legendary. :D I even laughed out loud a couple of times! If you're a fan of BL and this might seem like your cup of tea, definitely give it a try. I'm looking forward to reading more of ebi's projects involving these two!
Good game, would read again. The writing is excellent and the characters are very entertaining too.
(ignore the short playtime, played this on itch and bought here to support the dev) This was such a lovely experience! Fantastic balance of hard-hitting emotions, cute banter, and relationship development throughout, culminating in some sweet, beautifully executed payoff. I think at different points in my life, I could relate strongly to each of the characters; it was so heartwarming to see their relationship blossom and ultimately flourish through the ups and downs. The h-scenes were also a very welcome addition that contributed significantly to the story. As for the art, it was just SO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ CUTE >,< Blushing Yuel is one of my new favorite sprites, and will likely be one of yours if you read this. Overall, *highly* recommend to all BL/romance fans.
TLDR: Great Yaoi/BL Visual Novel between a cute sad guy and his handsome cousin. It's a silly, fun, completely fictional love story, so the creepy family romance theme didn't bother me and isn't to be taken super seriously. Fans of Yaoi/Boy's Love will eat this up, and even readers like me who haven't explored this genre will have fun reading this. Unluckily in Love is a great story about a man who experiences a family emergency. His handsome cousin supports him through the crisis and romance blossoms. The main characters have great dialogue and chemistry. Ebi-Hime, the author, has a fantastic track record of writing an entertaining tsundere main character with an irreverent love interest that loves to tease and goof off. Suffice to say, she's yet to disappoint with Unluckily in Love, as the main characters are interesting and won't give the reader any dull moments. If i was forced to complain, Unluckily in Love is lacking in side characters. Tavi's mother is well illustrated and makes a few appearances, but the story mostly consists of scenes between the two main characters and nothing else. However, this didn't bother me since Yuel and Tavi are both very entertaining and interesting protagonists and I never got bored of them. Having said that, interesting side characters like those in Ebi-Hime's Blackberry Honey and My Dear Prince are probably what made those my two favorite stories written by Ebi-Hime's. The adult scenes were well illustrated and written. The text is very explicit, but the illustrations are surprisingly tame. I don't have a preference regarding how explicit I personally want adult scenes to be in visual novels, so i have no complaints in this department. Adult scenes always add more context and depth to the relationship in question, so I always appreciate them and the one in Unluckily In Love is no different. Just remember that adult scenes are always graphic by design, so only install and view 'em if you're comfortable reading and viewing explicit sexual content. If i can address the elephant in the room real quick. Yes, this story's main plot point is a romance between first cousins. Keep that in mind if it's a deal breaker for you. BUT, please take into consideration that Unluckily in Love is a totally fictional, goofy, entertaining story with an anime-ish aesthetic. This visual novel is just meant for a pleasant read without a super serious message or statement behind it. For all these reasons, the taboo theme didn't bother me too much and I urge you not to let it be the deciding factor when contemplating whether to try this or not. Unluckily in Love also has zero decisions or choices required by the player. This is how I personally enjoy reading visual novels, so this was a plus for me. In conclusion, Unluckily in Love was a fantastic read and an obvious recommendation for fans of Yaoi/Boy's Love visual novels. And even if you're like me and only dabble in the BL sub-genre of romance, I think you'll appreciate this fun story.
I’m completely obsessed! I love them so muuuchh! Yuel is just like me for real, and Tavi is really hot lmao. They are really well written characters, and the game’s dialogue is soooo good! And I’m obsessed! Did I already say that I’m obsessed? I love Yuel and Tavi, they are both precious and I can’t stop thinking about them! I’m trying so hard not to play this game the whole day and to just breath it like the air in my lungs. I’m just really passionate and my brain doesn’t want me to do or think about anything else. I relate a lot to Yuel, and reading this story is giving me a lot of comfort. I really appreciate the way everything is written and handled.
Follow Far2close - Visual Novel Playthroughs Curator Page
Unluckily in Love Developer: ebi-hime Publisher: ebi-hime
Intro:
After the passing of his father, Yuel's life spirals downward. Free from his father's shadow and horribly lonesome, he calls for a meetup with Tavi at inconvenient hours. Tavi offers Yuel to stay at his apartment to help things settle down, but after time passes by, Yuel finds a new struggle: his cousin, Tavi. Yuel starts to develop feelings for his own cousin, and with more time he spends with him, the intensity gets stronger.
Pros:
1. Having played All Ashes and Illusions, the characters have been modernized but they retain their characteristics. It also somewhat goes in a similar direction, but modified to be less screwed up. Tavi is charismatic, charming, and has a high libido. Yuel is younger, naive, and unsure. The characters are written well, at least the main ones. 2. The story is fine. It's not exactly outstanding, it's just a normal (incestual) love story. It's wholesome and it is a big break compared to All Ashes and Illusions, but not as ambitious. 3. The character art by Kimiyotosan is great as usual and the backgrounds by BackgroundTK look wonderful. My favorite background is the night view of the city from Tavi's balcony. 4. The music by Mock Off is upbeat most of the time that fits in well with Yuel's mundane life and his comfortable time with Tavi. 5. The bonus is silly and adorable. It is a pleasant addition.
Cons:
1. As I said, the story is fine and doesn't have a complex plot. If you are looking for something more outstanding and ambitious, the other stories by Ebi-hime may be up your alley, several have the same characters. 2. Some familial characters get mentioned by name only, so it may take a bit to remember them as they are not direct characters involved. (Not counting Khalil, Amrita, or Armand. This is more focused on the more unknown ones such as Rakesh.)
Conclusion:
Unluckily in Love is wholesome and much more lighthearted than an alternate universe of the characters. It might not be outstanding, but it is a fine read. Score: 7/10 GOOD
there's this stray black pixel when yuel's in his sleeping clothes but the writing is good.
