After 10 hours, I felt like it was not very interesting or even much fun. The runs felt the same as there really isn't any need to adjust your deck once you get the hand of things. Well, until you hit a wall with some enemy that negates your deck completely thus wasting the entire run. The cards that are unlocked aren't typically any better than the starting set. The "Bling" accessories are only good for the current mission and are used up afterwards. Bling itself is hard to obtain as well. Meta-progression requires way too much grind for me to waste my time to do so. I feel the developers made the bad decision to stretch out the game play time with a very boring grinding mechanic. The story just wasn't for me. I didn't find any humor in it even though they tried nailing it to me with a big hammer. It was just over the top nonsense. The graphics are mediocre and the music is a very standard type. I came across a few bugs here and there. One time I went into an event mission inside the run and it wiped out all my money and sausages. It made it rather difficult to complete the overall run. Another time, the "shopoholics" didn't give me back the money they took after the battle which left me with no currency. It was then I decided that the game wasn't fun and just a tedious mess. While Union of Gnomes certainly isn't the worse card based battler I have played, there are far better once out there, I'm not going to waste any more time on this one. I'd say you can safely ignore this game and go buy something else.
Union of Gnomes is a refreshing blend of roguelike deckbuilding and tactical strategy that takes familiar fairy-tale concepts and turns them upside down. Developed by Hoolignomes and published by HeroCraft PC, the game places players in charge of a rebellion of gnomes determined to overthrow the oppressive rule of Snow White. This unusual premise immediately gives the game a distinctive identity, separating it from many fantasy-themed deckbuilders that often rely on more conventional heroes-versus-monsters narratives. The result is a colorful and entertaining adventure that combines humor, strategic combat, and meaningful progression into a surprisingly engaging package. The game's story serves as more than a simple backdrop for battles. Players guide a growing resistance movement through a world inspired by classic fairy tales, encountering familiar characters and locations that have been reimagined through a comedic lens. The writing embraces satire and playful humor, creating an atmosphere that remains lighthearted even when the stakes become serious. Rather than presenting a dark revolution, the game delivers a whimsical struggle for freedom that consistently maintains its charm. The narrative may not be overly complex, but it provides enough personality and motivation to keep players invested throughout their campaign. Combat is where Union of Gnomes truly shines. The game follows the foundations of the roguelike deckbuilding genre while introducing its own tactical twists. Instead of controlling a single protagonist, players command a squad of gnomes, each contributing unique strengths and abilities to the battle. This party-focused design encourages experimentation and strategic planning, as success depends not only on the cards in a deck but also on how effectively the team works together. Every encounter requires players to balance offense, defense, resource management, and status effects, creating a satisfying level of depth that rewards careful decision-making. The card system is one of the strongest aspects of the experience. A large selection of cards allows players to build highly specialized strategies centered on damage output, poison effects, debuffs, support abilities, or complex combinations of multiple mechanics. Discovering powerful synergies becomes one of the game's most rewarding elements, especially during longer runs where a carefully crafted deck begins to showcase its full potential. The variety available ensures that different playthroughs rarely feel identical, encouraging players to test new approaches and adapt to changing circumstances. Like any successful roguelike, Union of Gnomes thrives on replayability. Randomized encounters, evolving deck options, and unpredictable rewards create a sense of discovery that keeps runs engaging even after multiple attempts. Defeat is an expected part of the experience, but each failure provides valuable lessons that improve future performance. The progression system successfully balances challenge and reward, motivating players to continue refining their strategies and pushing deeper into the game's content. This loop of experimentation and improvement forms the foundation of the game's long-term appeal. Another noteworthy feature is the emphasis on resource management and strategic choices outside of combat. Players must carefully decide how to navigate their journey, weighing potential rewards against the risks of future encounters. Recruiting new allies, upgrading capabilities, and conserving valuable resources all contribute to a greater sense of planning. These decisions add another layer of depth that extends beyond the battlefield and help make each run feel unique. Visually, the game embraces a bright and whimsical art style that complements its fairy-tale setting. Character designs are expressive and memorable, while environments successfully capture the playful nature of the world. The presentation may not rival larger-budget productions, but it effectively communicates the game's tone and keeps battles easy to read. Combined with fitting sound design and a lively atmosphere, the visual presentation helps bring the world of rebellious gnomes to life. Union of Gnomes succeeds because it combines familiar roguelike deckbuilding mechanics with a creative setting and strong tactical foundations. Its humorous story, squad-based combat, extensive card variety, and rewarding progression systems create an experience that feels both accessible and strategically rich. While some players may wish for additional polish or greater narrative depth, the game's inventive premise and engaging gameplay more than compensate. For fans of deckbuilders and roguelikes looking for something with a unique personality, Union of Gnomes offers an entertaining and memorable adventure that stands out in a crowded genre. Davvero divertente.
This game made some design decisions that I find hard to understand. You start with a deck of 10 gnomes, and then have the ability to add more throughout each run. But the gnomes you start out with are no less powerful then the ones you find along the way, so unlike StS you aren't making your deck stronger by adding new cards; you are just diluting it and pivoting somewhat. Furthermore, you have to pay upkeep for each gnome in your deck. It is a very thematic rule, but mechanically it makes adding more cards have an even larger drag. Combined with needing to upgrade gnomes individually, the end result is that increasing your squad is liable to make you weaker, not stronger.
Cute fun slay the spire style game. Artwork is there, no so many animations, but it works.
