I really liked the experience, a good chill horror game filled with creepy moments and without cheap jumpscares (but I was still tense by moments) If you're into aesthetic in a very dark atmosphere with an easy going story but still challenging this is for you I wouldn't pay attention to the bad comments, I didn't played it that sneaky, enemy's are pretty straight forward once you understand how they work
😡🕯️ Unholy — rozczarowanie w mrocznym wydaniu. Wydałem pieniądze, a dostałem produkt pełen błędów. Pożegnanie z tą grą to ulga.
Beautiful graphics and awesome story. I really dig it.
Looks great , good story, good fun. Picked it up on sale, worth it. Looking forward to more from this studio.
So was sieht man in diesem Genre selten.
Very boring game and nothing horror about it.
Unholy, developed by Duality Games and published under 505 Pulse, is a psychological horror adventure that attempts to blend stealth, puzzle-solving, exploration, and narrative into a grim and unsettling experience. At its core, the story follows Dorothea, a mother whose young son Gabriel is sacrificed by a secretive cult. Stricken by grief and desperation, she pursues him into a twisted alternate dimension known as the Eternal City, a place where masks, rituals, and emotions dictate the rules of survival. This premise establishes the emotional weight that drives the game forward, giving players both a personal and symbolic reason to navigate its sinister environments. The idea of using emotions not only as narrative themes but also as functional mechanics sets Unholy apart in concept, though the execution doesn’t always reach the same level of ambition. The most striking aspect of Unholy is its atmosphere and visual design. The environments draw heavily from Eastern European influences, particularly brutalist architecture and decayed industrial spaces that evoke a sense of bleakness and oppression. The contrast between the drab, suffocating real-world settings and the grotesque, ritual-laden Eternal City is one of the game’s strongest narrative tools, immersing the player in two equally unsettling worlds. The Eternal City is populated by masked citizens, eerie structures, and ritualistic symbols, creating an almost theatrical sense of menace. Lighting and shadows play an important role in building tension, and despite the game’s shortcomings elsewhere, the visual direction consistently reinforces its themes of secrecy, control, and despair. Even when its systems falter, Unholy manages to leave a lasting impression through its art direction alone. Unfortunately, the gameplay struggles to match the quality of its aesthetics. Movement feels stiff and imprecise, and the act of simply walking through the world often comes across as awkward and unrefined. Stealth is intended to be a pillar of the experience, but the artificial intelligence of enemies is unreliable, with detection sometimes feeling arbitrary or broken. Hiding mechanics, such as slipping into lockers or crouching behind objects, are undermined by inconsistent responses from guards, who can either miss the obvious or spot the player through solid walls. Combat is minimal and mostly reliant on manipulating the environment, often through setting traps or triggering explosives, while the slingshot—a key tool that uses emotional “ammo”—is underwhelming in its implementation. The concept of using emotions such as anger or fear as projectiles to influence the environment or solve puzzles is creative, but it never feels fully integrated into the broader gameplay loop. Puzzle design, while serviceable, tends toward repetition and simplicity. Most challenges revolve around locating codes, repairing circuits, activating mechanisms, or using emotional charges to open new paths. Early on, these mechanics hold interest, but as the story progresses, they fail to evolve in complexity or variety. Collecting mementos to upgrade abilities is a nice touch in theory, though it does little to add depth, as the progression is too shallow to meaningfully alter how the game is played. As a result, what should be moments of clever problem-solving often devolve into routine tasks, more about prolonging the experience than enriching it. Narratively, the game has an emotionally powerful premise, but its delivery lacks the polish and resonance needed to truly captivate. The relationship between Dorothea and her son could have been the emotional anchor driving the story, yet uneven pacing, awkward cutscenes, and flat dialogue diminish its impact. Voice acting rarely rises above serviceable, and animations often feel unconvincing, which weakens immersion during key dramatic moments. Instead of building suspense or deepening player investment, the story too often drifts, leaving players waiting for payoffs that rarely land with the force they should. The world hints at fascinating lore—the role of masks, the cult’s influence, the symbolism of the Eternal City—but much of it remains underexplored or obscured by uneven writing. Technical issues further complicate the experience. Reports of bugs range from clipping through the environment to broken cutscenes that leave the player stuck in place. Audio desynchronization, subtitle mismatches, and performance drops in more demanding areas also erode the overall polish. These glitches may be patchable over time, but at launch they make for a frustrating experience, particularly in a game that depends so heavily on atmosphere and immersion. While some players may overlook these flaws in favor of its strong visual identity, others will find the interruptions too frequent to ignore. Reception to Unholy reflects this duality between promise and execution. While its artistic vision is widely admired, its mechanics, pacing, and polish have drawn significant criticism. Some players will find themselves engaged by the oppressive setting and the metaphorical weight of its story, willing to forgive its awkward gameplay in exchange for its haunting imagery and atmosphere. Others, however, will be left disappointed by shallow systems, underwhelming storytelling, and persistent bugs. In many ways, Unholy embodies its own title—it is a collection of strong ideas and compelling aesthetics bound together by mechanics and technical issues that fail to live up to their potential. It is not without merit, but it remains more of a haunting curiosity than a truly satisfying horror experience. Rating: 6/10
