Very nice game in the Hades-like genre. While arguably less grim, its cutesy graphics are a weird pairing with its "sacrificing an endless series of peasants to the pit" theme, which really is significantly darker than the "you're a magical prince and immune to death" theme of Hades. When you die it usually feels like it's your fault, and the speed of unlocking things is pretty reasonable - it *seems like* it's going to be doing the annoying thing of exponentially escalating the cost of upgrades, but the rate of gaining money also accelerates (if you're doing reasonably well) so it doesn't get painfully slow. There is a slightly annoying thing where some upgrades are optional purchases, and it turns out having them makes things worse, but you can't deselect them (something like wesley's boots, that's not quite it, is the worst - it makes you immune to spikes, but playing competently you almost never get got by spikes, and there are places where intentionally being harmed by spikes is beneficial, so having that power in hand means you can't claim those things, and having it purchased means it can show up in your run, thereby preventing you from getting something good that you would have got instead.) Other than that very minor gripe, the balance is very good, I *usually* feel like it's my fault if I lose, not the game being unfair, and it does a decent job of being different each run for at least enough runs to get to the main plot endgame. There's some post-endgame content that's a bit less reasonable, but I'm happy to just not play that, and it's nice that it's there for people who want more of the same but harder.

this game scratches an itch while giving a very unique new and welcome twist. 10/10 I got it for very little since the sequel in getting hype. I may check out the sequel one day but for now I had a great experience.

Not my thing.
