Some time ago, this game underwent a complete wipe when it was under a different publisher. There is no development team for this game, only managers. This game and any european / american versions are the property of techmo koei... in other words, the publishers can only update what techmo allow them to. This means the japanese version is often many months ahead of the version we get. As for the player base. Well because of the wipe and the amount of real money people lost in items because of it, only the die hard fan base would invest money into this. It is because of this why many players are free to play rather than pay to play. We don't want to get burnt like that again ever. As for the gameplay itself, there is a lot to do in it but it is one of the grindiest games you will ever play. It can take months or even years to get a character to its full potential so a huge amount of patience is needed. To be honest there are far better ways to spen your time than moving around in a very slow boat until you can eventually get something half decent. I hate to say it but this game unfortunatly is a pay to win game and if you truly want to progress in this, then sooner or later you will have to spend money in it or sepnd a very, very long time to get even some of the basic gear you will need to do anything even remotely fun. I know this seems like a damning post but it is only fair to warn you what you will be getting into. Many post and comments can tell you more of how this has had a rocky history with several different publishers taking this game over. Finaly.. the worst is the in game items you really want are a lottery system. You spend real money on a gamble that you might get the item you want where the rest of the items are just junk that most players don't want. I speak from many years of playing this. It is not what it once was and I tend to play with huge gaps in between because there is only so much grinding even I can take. You can give it a try as a free to play player but once you see the speed of paid ships, it will quickly dampen your spirits. Also once you leave european waters... everywhere else is pvp !

i wish I was older when this game was in its prime. I started playing in 2012, 2013. Back when Netmarble owned it. The playerbase was large and there was an unproblematic entry for new players. Now that I've returned, grinded about 600 hours just to get to currently 59 trade level and reached Indonesia, it just doesn't feel worth it. Everything is traded for CT (Captain's Tickets). Prices are exorbitant. I told myself I wanted to make money in game away from the player driven market e.g. spice trading, selling crafted goods. I cashed once just to try it, I sold a CT and I got 1.5b ducats in hand... now I'm like wtf is the point then?? The playerbase has aged and this game, in terms of its life cycle, is reaching its end. I think this is my final goodbye to UWO. I need to throw the nostalgia that I've created with this game and move on.

This is one of my favorite MMO's of all time. The feeling of exploration is unmatched by any other MMO. Every time I look at a real life map of the Mediterranean Sea, I get an itch only this game can scratch. While obviously dated.. This game has something special about it. It's not fast paced and it takes a while to do a lot, it's worth a try. I've been on and off UWO for years and I always find myself coming back. I'm happy they are keeping it updated.

Its a very complex game. Very niche too. Woulnd´t recommend if you dont like the plot or dont mind a very slow gameplay. It has a big learning curve and you will need to read a lot, the tutorials sometimes are a bit meh, but nothing you cannot look for in the internet. its a game that doesnt hold your hand, so be prepared to have make your own goals and your own ways of achieving them. +Its a great way to learn about history & geography.
Old school, a little hard to start and get use to but enjoying it when it works.
Great game to get back into. Yes it has a semi abusive cash shop, however it is not mandatory and you can easily play and enjoy it without spending. Ive played this game on and off for many years and still enjoy it. The player base is bigger than ever, remember most do not play through steam.
cash grab mid tier bad game
Played for two hours, still haven't done anything but click npc, read text and watch a boat. It's like if Voyage Century Online had an inaccurate map and nothing to do while sailing
