UFO - Unfortunately Fortunate Organisms is a compact arcade-action title that mixes reflex-based gameplay with a light layer of strategic planning, built around a playful inversion of the usual alien invasion premise. Instead of defending Earth, you take control of a struggling extraterrestrial pilot tasked with abducting humans to fuel survival and prepare for a looming confrontation. Developed by Rebourne Studios and published by Back To Basics Gaming, the game leans into simplicity and immediacy, offering a loop that is easy to grasp but gradually reveals a bit more depth through its structure. The core of the experience revolves around short missions on planetary surfaces where you must dodge incoming threats while collecting humans using a tractor beam. Movement and shooting are straightforward, but the challenge quickly escalates as enemy defenses intensify and hazards begin to overlap. The game blends elements of arcade shooters and bullet-hell design, requiring constant movement and quick decision-making to stay alive. At the same time, the act of collecting humans introduces a risk-reward dynamic—some targets are more valuable than others, while certain pickups can negatively affect your run, forcing you to make snap judgments under pressure. What gives the game a stronger sense of direction than a typical arcade shooter is its time-limited progression system. Each playthrough unfolds across a fixed number of in-game days, during which you must gather enough resources to strengthen your ship and prepare for a final encounter. This structure adds urgency to every decision, as failure doesn’t just reset a level—it costs valuable time. The result is a loop that encourages efficiency and planning, pushing players to balance cautious play with the need to progress quickly. It also creates a natural incentive for replayability, as subsequent runs allow for better optimization and smarter upgrade choices. Upgrades form the backbone of the game’s progression. Resources gathered during missions can be invested into improving weapons, durability, and other ship capabilities, allowing for different approaches depending on playstyle. You might focus on survivability to endure longer encounters or invest in offensive power to clear threats more quickly. While this system adds a welcome layer of customization, it remains relatively straightforward, and over time it becomes clear which upgrades provide the most consistent advantages, reducing experimentation in later playthroughs. Visually, the game adopts a clean, minimalist style that prioritizes clarity during chaotic moments. The environments and effects are functional, ensuring that hazards and targets are easy to identify even when the screen becomes crowded. However, this approach also means that the game lacks a strong visual identity, with environments that feel somewhat interchangeable. The audio design follows a similar path, offering basic sound effects and understated music that support the gameplay without standing out. One of the game’s strengths lies in how well its systems come together during short sessions. Each run feels focused, with a clear beginning, progression arc, and endpoint, making it easy to jump in and out without a large time commitment. However, this structure also highlights its limitations. The variety of missions, environments, and enemy behaviors is relatively limited, and once the core loop is understood, the experience can begin to feel repetitive. While multiple endings and upgrade paths add some replay value, they don’t fully offset the lack of evolving mechanics. Despite its modest scope, there’s a certain charm in how the game combines action and strategy without overcomplicating either. It captures the spirit of classic arcade design while introducing just enough progression to give each run a sense of purpose. It doesn’t aim for depth or long-term engagement, but it succeeds in delivering a cohesive and enjoyable experience within its limited framework. In the end, UFO - Unfortunately Fortunate Organisms is a focused, bite-sized game that offers a satisfying blend of quick reflex gameplay and light strategic planning. It’s best enjoyed in short bursts, where its simplicity and pacing work in its favor. While it may not hold attention over extended periods, it provides a solid and occasionally engaging experience for players looking for something straightforward and slightly different. Rating: 7/10

Lovely game with morbid humour. Once I started playing I couldn't stop until I finished it. Has a lot of replayability with fun mechanics. Good purchase!
The core gameplay loop is challenging and can be fun, but it's actually TOO hard to dodge enemy fire and try to abduct humans at the same time, I'm frequently getting in situations where I'm taking more damage than I can repair with resources and getting into this broken game loop. The game only gives you 30 days which doesn't actually seem like enough time to get all the upgrades, learning curve is too steep, game has a "continue" function but after going to the main menu and trying to return to my game all of my progress was totally wiped, the game either needs to be easier or have some kind of save functionality, this is about on par with a web browser game in a bad way and until there's a possible update with QOL changes and tweaking the difficulty this is gonna be a no from me, too frustrating and not really worth the price.
