You are a Wehrmacht soldier in 1940 who opposed the Third Reich. Incarcerated by the SS, you must escape the procedurally-generated dungeon with the assistance of the German resistance using environmental clues to avoid detection by guards. Every playthrough is different.

I generally don't leave a review for a game while having such a low amount of playtime, but I am making an exception for Uberlaufer. [Experienced using Quest 2 over both Wired Link and Virtual Desktop Wireless Streaming] TL:DR Pros/Cons lists at the end. This is easily one of the most enjoyable VR games I've played this year, and I think it has massive potential to get even better throughout development. The core mechanics and game loop are extremely fun. Interactions feel great (though they can be a little buggy at times). Enemy AI is challenging but fair. Sound design is top notch. The game has a good amount of comfort and control options with more on the way. Overall it's surprisingly well made for the asking price! Not to say it's perfect by any means, but these are the type of VR developers I think really deserve more support. You can tell that this isn't some cheap cash grab. It does use a few assets I've seen before in other indie titles, but they don't ruin the experience by any means. Plus I assume many things may be placeholder given the Early Access nature of the game. I Highly HIGHLY recommend giving it a try, even if you're like me and hate Stealth games. This is one of the few to do Stealth so well that I actually have fun evading enemies and using more creative takedown methods. Pro tip. Always carry a brick with you in your off hand. You never know when you'll need to chuck it at an SS soldiers face. For those who want it, here's my personal Pros/Cons lists. Pros: -Runs incredibly smooth -Almost all the comfort and control options you could ask for -Very replayable -Procedural dungeons feel like proper labyrinths -Physics based objects -Quite challenging -Sound Design and Music are incredible! -Good Voice Over (I play with German narration for full immersion) -Rewarding gameplay loop -Achievements and in game items to unlock -Did I mention you can throw bricks at the SS?? -Nice environmental visuals -Optional Spectator Cam (Seriously appreciate this feature Think Tank Decoy!) Cons: -Interactions can wig out sometimes -Reloading could be a lot smoother -No Toggle Grip option yet (acknowledged by developer and is on the way in a future update. Non issue for me since I prefer Hold Grip) Neutral: -The prisoner NPC are the same models from OLD Blade and Sorcery so I hope to see them implement better models in the future. -Enemy NPC are quite simplistic up close and lack facial expressions during combat. Would love to see them get better as well, and have mouth animations like the prisoner NPC have. -Food gives you like... a crumb of health. I'm not sure the extra life would be enough to survive against an extra gunshot. My Neutral thoughts would be negative, but the game is Early Access and hasn't even been out a month so they may be non issues by final release. I'll update my review post 1.0, but I have a feeling my overall recommendation will be the same!
Überlaüfer is a very promising stealth action game with impressive level variety and tense sneaking. Seated and standing play are officially supported but the game allows roomscale movement as well so you can take as many real-world steps as your play area allows. Additional room types haven't been added yet so you'll be seeing a lot of brick walls as you explore. However the different ways rooms, halls, columns, cells, stairs, ladders, tunnels, traps, and hiding spots can be randomly assembled together still surprises me. The dungeons are often quite large and you'll sometimes wonder just how big they can actually get while you're looking for an exit. The game is especially tense when you've completed your objectives but you're wounded and trying to get to the exit without raising an alarm. You might be tempted to run for it and hope you can reach the door with a few guards chasing you. More guards appear if an alarm is set off so firing few shots and staying in shadows is advised. The player can be in one of three visibility states. If you're near a lit bulb or torch your hands will glow red and guards will easily see you and accurately fire at you. 'Normal' lighting (most areas in this game are dim) will keep you from being spotted only if you're very far from guards. Hiding in hollowed out wall sections makes you fully invisible even to near guards. That can seem silly when a guard looks right at you though. Maybe those spots will be darkened further. The core sneaking experience is enjoyable and there are plenty of things you can crouch behind and use to break line of sight. Distracting guards with coins works well and you can lure them near hiding spots or into traps. Thrown coins can't be picked up again so you might want to keep them for buying things later. Conveniently the player can distract with bricks, cups, bottles, plates, and helmets. Bricks and helmets can also be swung or thrown for knockouts. Combat could be better however. Guards will often simply stop 1-2 meters away which lets you calmly reach your pistol around a corner and shoot them point blank. Having guards head to where you were last seen and start searching might make them more convincing and could also allow flanking. The player can take several bullet hits as well so using a brick to win a gun fight is strangely viable. The performance is good and there are a few graphics options available. The various settings for toggle grip, gun angle, and comfort are thoughtful too although I would like a few options for the wrist menu. Opening the inventory by turning your wrist is convenient but not when you just want to reload a pistol. Having the menu completely stop your movement when you're running from guards isn't ideal either. The developer has also included references to real people and historical events. There are leaflets, letters, and dossiers you can find while exploring that provide information about actual WW2 resistance fighters. The somber nature of these notes can be slightly undercut by the sight of a cartoonish guard falling face first into a pit but they're still appreciated. German voice acting is also available for further immersion. There's already plenty to discover and unlock and the developer is planning to add more perks, weapons, and dungeon room types. If you liked the randomly generated levels in Compound but wished you could do more sneaking then Überlaüfer is what you're looking for. I'm sure I'll be returning to the game often especially as it gets updates that add more variety to the guard behavior.
Cool concept still needs work. If I dropped something on the ground the game doesnt seem to sync with my VR settings and thinks that the ground is much lower than it actually is, so I have no way of picking up anything
Fun game! It does really give old Wolfenstein vibes, which I like. if you get a bit lucky and play well you can beat the first dungeon within 30 minutes. I died a lot so it took me almost 3 hours to finally beat the first one, but it was good. Hope the devs expand upon the premise with more area variety, weapons, enemies, etc.
Pretty intense, nice change for a game on VR. Just gotta fix the gun angle in options and its better. 8/10
