Look, I actually do like this game. The love interests are interesting, cute and sweet; the stories are a bit on the shorter side, but they're cute; and the art is pretty. HOWEVER, the main female character, Hazel, whom you play as, is absolutely insufferable and unlikeable. She's mean, rude, immature, has the emotional range of a teaspoon and flies off the handle All. Of. The. Freaking. Time. For absolutely nothing at all. Her personality, despite annoying, could be accepted as okay once you start seeing that a lot of it is due to her insecurities, but her attitude is just so completely poop that her "redemption" (her insecurities) is useless. The fact you don't have many choices to make as the player, and, therefore, can't actually stir the conversations or the story in accordance to how you'd prefer the character to be or act makes Hazel's attitude unbearable which, to me, at least, made it hard to get through the game, despite how much I liked Adrian and Cameron and their storyline. I can't talk about the male main character, Jace, since I haven't played from his pov. But Hazel completely demolished this game for me. Her attitude, actions and choices at certain times are just so annoying, stupid, frustrating, and disbelief inducing that I had to stop multiple times while playing so my anger and frustration at her could subside enough so that I could actually continue playing. She is absolutely unlikeable and that sucks.
honestly this game is cute and I love the love interests. I HATE the twins, and the fact that we have to play as them. I cant relate to them whatsoever, and obviously you don't always have to self insert, but isn't that what dating sims are all about?? Why is it that I cant express my love for rock music with Cameron, instead HAZEL is like- "rock music helps you relax??" and we have to say our favorite is classical music? i hate classical music. It just makes playing it less fun, especially since i paid for this. But I guess half of this is my fault for not fully reading the description in detail. other then that, the game is very well made, the art style is lovely and the love interests are very lovable. I personally Just hate the twins lol. But if playing as someone else is your type of game, id totally recommend this game. Again its my own fault for not reading the full description all the way down at the bottom of the page (thanks for that, totally didn't miss it..) But at least I got to support the creators Ig even if i'm not fully enjoying the game. I have come to the conclusion that Hazel is the most unlikable character to ever exist, she is annoying, rude, and weird. She does unnecessary things that contribute nothing, and constantly acts like she isn't in to Cameron. She makes the game frustrating and not enjoyable. edit; ive not finished the game, i wanted to keep playing to give it a a chance. But hazel is so obnoxious, she has the worst personality ever. Im trying to pursue cameron, why is she saying to ignore him? I do not want to ignore him. This is pissing me off the more I play, and im almost to the conclusion that this game was a waste of my money. I will keep playing it got worse when Jace got 'protective' of hazel, except he just acted like an jealous boyfriend instead. That was so gross. Does the creators have a deal with inc3st? why is she calling her brother cute and pretty all the time. This is creeping me out.
一款专门为我们同时喜欢靓男靓女靓人类的双性恋玩家打造的双性恋快乐天堂,OOPS! ALL BISEXUALS!
The Love interests themselves are good. The MCs however, my god, you can play as A-hole A or A-hole B. The most annoying characters I ever had to play as. I almost feel bad that the LIs have the be with them. Self centered, obnoxious and rude. Idk why any of the LIs wants to be around them. The MCs are toxic af
Disclaimer: I also played the DLC, but it doesn't have much to offer. Too short and bland. It's inevitable to find vns with interesting premise, but subpar execution. Especially on Kickstarter. And I backed this one. Trouble Comes Twice is what happens when a developer has a favorite. It's not always noticeable from the get-go, but a certain character may be forgiven for being rude, harsh and obnoxious far too easily by the rest of the cast. It's even worse when it's a protagonist. Hazel is that protagonist. She's the "girl boss" in the worst possible way. She sees herself above everyone: family, friends, strangers. Often snarky and sarcastic, she only cares about herself. She does get a few moments of self-reflection, but it's not enough. She has no character development and imo only has one believable romance option. More on that later. Jace lives in a shadow of his sister, in more ways than one. From writing standpoint, he can be rude and unlikable but not nearly as bad as Hazel. From content stand point, his routes are more surface level. It's like his routes are just teasers for characters and their true conflicts, besides one. On a positive side, he gets character development: learning to accept oneself is never too easy. The love interests/routes: Zoe is the best love interest in the game. Why? Her relationship and potential romance with both twins is believably. She's the only one who even tries to stand up to Hazel and her dynamic with Jace is fine. Her CGs are of consistent quality for this game's standards. She has an arc(mostly seen in Hazel's version) and none of her endings were questionable. A pleasant character overall. Stephanie is the most balanced love interest. Or the most forgettable. You choose. Her development is predictable, but was nice to see. Both versions of her route developed similarly, with no highs or lows. I honestly don't think there's a good reason to choose her over other love interests because she doesn't have a strong personality to stand out. But she's cute, and that's enough for some people. Adrian was the reason I backed this game. I'm a huge sucker for "childhood friends to lovers", and his puppy crush for Jace was so obvious. I'm vanilla af, sue me. But the Hazel version of his route is the worst route of the game, both in terms of writing and art. They had negative chemistry with each other even by the end of the route and CGs looked flat and hideous. I had to stall the game for a while because it pissed me off so bad. Thankfully, Jace version is much better. Nothing new, but a good execution of the trope. My only criticism is there should've been more. Cameron got the shortest end of the stick for different reasons. His sprite looks good, but in CGs he often looked like a different person. Jace version was the worst offender, I had to click to skip the scene and read it from the backlog just so I can avoid those horrible CGs. It's my first time doing that in a visual novel. His writing was weird. Hazel's version was frustrating to read because their relationship barely developed, but there were good scenes that showed more of his sensitive side and his backstory was emotionally gripping. Jace's version had better execution of romance, but lacked any insight on his behavior and personality. A shame, really. I love "jock with a heart of gold" types, but the writers clearly had no idea what to do with him. Forth wall breaks Who thought this was a good idea? It was ok during MC selection, but it broke the pacing and tension for the rest of the game. The sibling banter wasn't funny, it was annoying and repetitive. Ending variations Good idea on paper. Too bad Dramatic endings were strange and best and downright terrible at worst. I wish they were cut out altogether and we got longer Romantic endings instead. Character design/CGs Character designs caught my eye back when I first saw the promo art. Everyone had distict identity and I could tell their personalities from designs alone. Good stuff. Sadly the CGs aren't nearly as good. They were drawn by different artists and suffered from boring composition, weird proportions and overall blandness. Whoever okay'ed them should've known better. The chibi CGs were cute, but I'd rather have better quality for main CGs. Music/SFX Both were forgettable, but inoffensive. UI It's a Ren'py game and works fine. But why did the devs change hotkeys for save/load and backlog? My muscle memory was confused. Conclusion For a character focused game, Trouble Comes Twice only cared about one of them: Hazel. The rest were either okay(Zoe, Stephanie) or had notable quality dips(Jace, Adrian, Cameron). Wouldn't recommend it unless you think obnoxious female characters = empowerment.
I absolutely won't lie, this game was really disappointing to me, especially since I had pretty high hopes for a game with such nice looking characters. Let's start with how the artstyle of the CGs really differs from the artstyle of the sprites. Normally it wouldn't be an issue, and it really isn't that big of a deal to me either, but it can just take you out of the immersion quite a bit, so I wouldn't recommend if immersion is important to you. The next and the biggest issue in my opinion would be the way the protagonists were written. They're described as those siblings that constantly bicker yet love each other deeply, but it's not really visible in the game, and you just have to take it for word. I mainly played as Jace, and I can confidently say that Hazel was mainly a complete ass, which was disappointing, and made me really irritated whenever I saw her on screen. I also have to point out how, for me, straight routes felt as if they were written with much more care than the queer routes, at least when it comes to Jace. On Hazel, I cannot say much, as I haven't finished her routes yet (because of how much of an ass she can be), so this may just be my opinion. Last thing that was quite unpleasant for me was the fact that some things about the love interests are mentioned in their respective routes for one twin, but never expanded upon unless you play the same route with the other twin.
For example, in the Jace x Cameron route, Jace finds out how Cameron tends to get into fights, and all we get is some brief information on why he does it, but ultimately we don't find out much. But in the Hazel x Cameron route, it's more expanded upon, and we actually get to see an example of it. It sort of ticked me off, since Cam is supposed to be more interested in Jace rather than Hazel.
But yeah, I wouldn't really recommend unless you're more in for the girls. I found the Zoe x Jace route to be pretty decent.
Trouble Comes Twice is a romance game about twins Hazel and Jace who make a bet with each other to get a partner by the time Christmas hits. The game is kind to us in that we just select the protagonist and love interest we want from an opening menu and then click OK. Then there's a brief "prologue" chapter where you see Jace and Hazel interact with the four LIs and then it goes into the route (with no transition so you should pay attention to the dialogue). The prologue choices have no impact on the story. I wanna say I would prefer to put this as a neutral review but honestly I probably shouldn't have played this game. For the record, I've finished Hazel's chapters for Zoe, Cameron and Adrian. I don't think I have it in me to play Jace's chapters because I'm already really struggling with Hazel's personality and I don't want to do the same thing but with a man. Hazel isn't a horrible person - it's just that she and Jace are both 20 and they are very, very obviously 20. It is nice to sometimes not play the same whimpering, sad, passive protagonist and for the protagonist to actually have a backbone, but what we sacrifice instead is positive communucation, emotional maturity, and kindness. I don't at any one point really believe that Hazel is nice. I'm so tired of her arrogance; every time she gets a compliment she says "I know" or "Being this pretty is illegal". It's literally killing me because I don't see how anyone could actually like her. She's just "there" in friends' lives but I'm not sure I've seen her there for them because the miscommunication tropes in this game are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ egregious. To add onto this, the dramatic endings just fill me with despair because you have the characters bending over backwards (in the male routes) to please Hazel, or causing unnecessary pain (in Zoe's route). I felt like this was totally unfair to them and it wouldn't make me want to be in a relationship with someone if this was how it was going before we were even together. Cameron:
In the dramatic ending is under the impression that Zoe doesn't like him even though she kissed him because she didn't tell him that she's going to Europe for 6 months as part of her degree. So that leads him to think that there was no reason for her to plan for the future because she didn't intend for them to be together and she stands there in **SILENCE** while he makes up his own story and then when he goes, "Well, I guess I'll see you later, then." She just goes ,"Sure." and FOR WHAT?
Adrian:
Basically is constantly apologising to Hazel thinking he did something wrong because she won't talk to him or tell him what she wants -- there's a scene where she introduces him to her friends and he invites them to sit with them during ice cream (which admittedly I think was a date and he probably shouldn't have done that because it was their time), and he's NICE to them, so Hazel gets up in a huff after sitting dead silent at the table and rushes outside saying she's leaving, so Adrian has to run out after her and he asks what's going on and she says he was being so nice to all of them it made her upset, and he goes "You said they were your firends so I thought you wanted me to get to know them as well."
??????? Zoe:
Throws a party after the event that she invited Hazel to perform at without her mother's permission and so when her mum comes home and chews her out, Hazel steps in to defend her and tell Maia she's a bad mother and to treat Zoe better (based on what Zoe has told her), but Zoe doesn't like that, tells Hazel to butt out and she doesn't need or want her help or even want her as a girlfriend! So Hazel leaves, still admonishing Maia but later Zoe texts her asking to talk and says she didn't mean all that, but she in fact does have feelings for Hazel and wants it to happen.
Stephanie:
I liked how Hazel and Stephanie shared music in common and they weren't familiar with each other before the story - the only thing is, Stephanie is terrible at communication. I think that I probably would've died doing the dramatic ending as there's no way I could treat such a gentle and naive girl like Hazel does the LIs.
None of this is nice to read. I had initially thought that the communication was better in the female/female route - in Zoe's romantic ending, I think it is - but I hated that dramatic ending so much and I disliked both of Cameron and Adrian's endings that I just don't think it's worth doing them at all. The pacing of the game is decent. I feel there's a bit lost as both Adrian and Zoe start off as friends to Hazel already so a lot of that development is missing - I think it's one thing to say about the criticism of the trope of Childhood Friends - in some cases, like this one, we don't really see much of the getting to know you or growing close. Also Zoe seems to have known Hazel for maybe a year or two but they don't really know each other that well as Zoe hides parts of herself. I appreciate that it doesn't rush into I Love Yous like other traditional games (minus one route), and the passage of time does seem to be evident in the story (I mean I feel that it takes place over at least a month and not like 2 weeks of strangers to lovers). I do think the characters have some depth, though. Cameron/Zoe/Adrian have full backstories and likes/dislikes, and even their parents/family have sprites, which I really appreciated. It really helped to bring the game to life. The game has no love catch, love meter or anything - instead it's quite obvious which are the Romantic or Dramatic choices. Just choose whatever one that doesn't: 1. bring up pain for the love interest 2. push back against the love interest then you'll likely end up at the romantic ending. Just do the opposite for the dramatic ending. Each route lasts about 1.5 hours, just ignore my playtime as I had idled a lot in the game. Once you finish one ending, you can go back and skip the dialogue to do the other one. There is a CG for each ending and a few different choices also get you some extra chibi or CG slides. You can view the CG gallery after the game but you only get the extra content if you do both the dramatic and romantic ending for the characters. There's no credit roll, the game just abrumptly ends and goes back to the main menu. The art is good. I really like the sprite art and the backgrounds are decen. The chibi art is quite cute and still makes anatomical sense. The CG art is in a completely different style and that can be a bit strange when it comes to comparing the characters in the sprites vs the cgs. I like sprite Cameron and Adrian more, but CG Zoe and Hazel look really good together. The music is simple and serves its purpose - Hazel plays piano so sometimes there's piano music in the BG in her chapters. Jace is good at sports or whatever. This game is not voiced. Play this one with caution if you want something light/forgettable.
Cute, but the artstyle changes in almost every illustration. The characters are fun and mostly okay. The graphics quality changes in every illustratin as well xd Fan of the siblings relationship, its very accurate. I think it should be a little bit less expensive but in general is a good game. 6/10
