Treasure Adventure Game is one of literally thousands of 2D retro pixel platformers infesting Steam. This one seems to have been mostly written with Python, and involves a young boy on a tropical island jumping around and solving various platformer based puzzles. It seems a lot of effort went into storytelling and level design, which is the best thing that can be said about this, most amateur shovelware platformers don't even go that far. A choice was made to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Resolution is locked and can't be changed, and there's no visual or graphics tweaks, so there's no way to improve the very lazy, mediocre visuals. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC. The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio. It's possible they developed this on an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. The game contains a lot of screen flashing which may be a threat to people with epilepsy, but there's no warning, so that's another reason for some gamers to avoid this. Finally, while this appears free, it's donationware, and also, it's being pushed as a free game simply to advertise the paid version, Treasure Adventure World. Not the worst platformer around, but impossible to recommend if it isn't the 1990s. It's not the 1990s.
Absolutely spectacular game. And it's FREE!!! What starts off as seemingly simple 2D platformer gets more and more complex as you progress. Stellar variety in environments and gameplay, game keeps introducing more and more mechanics as you play which makes you revisit the whole open world again and again and again, and each time you will find tons of new stuff. The open world is brilliant, you go to east or west and at some point you get to the other side of the world, it's like a real whole planet. The game does not hold your hand for the most part. The problem is once you get to the freedom the hint bird becomes absolutely useless, but for the positive, while there are some limitations and order by which you have to do some stuff, but you can usually choose from numerous stuff to do and in your own order, so the freedom aspect in the game is great. The difficulty can be brutal in this game, there are maybe 6 or so massive difficulty spikes in the game where I kept thinking why is this game so hard, so be prepared, it's not a game if you expect something unchallenging; it is often a relaxing game, but definitely not an easy one. The tone of the game is also surprising, 95% of the time I would say it is kid-friendly, but (no plot spoilers here, but a bit descriptive)
there are a few moments in the game that make me question that, some pretty disturbing occasional moments, violent and very dark.
This odd tone really worked for me though. The music is fantastic in this game. I never got tired of hearing the tracks numerous times, they're all so good and the variety is superb too. The puzzles in the game have a great diversity as well. They range from super easy ones, to very difficult ones to cryptic and 'how was I supposed to know it' ones, although the cryptic stuff is mainly only if you go for 100% and there's very little of it; the 100%+ is super rewarding, by the way, and I would highly encourage to go for the full completion even if you have to use guides from time to time. I chose to not use guides for the vast majority of the game and it was super rewarding to figure out stuff on my own; however, near the end, I reached a point where I could not finish a few things on my own anymore. The story is phenomenal too. At first, for the vast majority of the game it felt as if the writing was very minimal, but the ending comes with a blast where all the
lore, little details and foreshadowing
come into play. It's all so well done and earned. This game is a must play if you love 2D platformers and exploration. 9/10
This game seems like the developer's first game and it also seems that it received no playtesting by people, because there are so many bad and unfun design choices. You lose all progress whenever you die and oh boy do you die often, everything deals a lot of damage and you have a very small health pool. Save points are few and far between. Also some of the puzzles are outright annoying and unfun and too time consuming. Same goes for the traversing between islands, whenever you hit a dead end and you have to go find the next new area to explore it just takes ages to get to. Which also sometimes you don't even know where to go next because the Parrot is as helpful as a rock. Can't progress in this game unless you look at a walkthrough online. What would make this game better: Autosave on each room or at least save orbs more frequently. Bigger health pool and/or less damaging enemies/environment. Fast travel between islands. Parrot that actually guides you where to go next. I want to like this game because I can see the effort put into it and I like to explore the world, but it just needs a lot of improvements to make the game actually fun and enjoyable to play.
