Unexpected surprise. I basically add almost any game that looks more or less like a twin stick shooter to my wishlist. But upon playing this, it turned out to be quite a different beast. Action-adventure is a super correct description for this game. The action part is really solid. All the weapons have a great feel to them - something that too many games do not accomplish. And later you can upgrade the weapons with alternate modes that expand the fairly varied arsenal you have even further. The game is challenging, but in a good way (except the final boss battle, I hope that can get some fixes). The adventure part is also present with some really goofy dialogues (didn't mind the silly swearing at all) and a good amount of exploration. Overall well worth a try.
Nice little game
Town of Machine is an ambitious indie action-adventure that blends top-down shooter mechanics with a dark, surreal narrative set in a distant, broken future. Developed by BlueEagle Productions and published by Paul Schneider, the game takes place centuries after humanity’s collapse, in a world where technology, the supernatural, and decay have fused into something deeply unsettling. Players step into the role of Agent Silverman, an exorcist and investigator whose latest assignment draws him into a desolate settlement known only as the Town of Machine. From the outset, the game establishes an eerie tone, positioning itself as both a combat-driven experience and a slow-burn mystery shaped by atmosphere and exploration. The story unfolds gradually as Silverman navigates the abandoned streets, industrial ruins, and warped interiors of the town, searching for clues surrounding a missing person case that quickly spirals into something far more disturbing. Dialogue with surviving inhabitants and encounters with hostile entities hint at a past filled with experimentation, corruption, and forces beyond human understanding. Rather than delivering exposition in large chunks, the game relies heavily on environmental storytelling, fragmented conversations, and visual cues to convey its lore. This approach rewards attentive players but can also feel cryptic, leaving much of the interpretation to the player and reinforcing the game’s unsettling, dreamlike quality. Gameplay centers on fast-paced, top-down shooting with a strong emphasis on movement, positioning, and weapon management. Combat encounters can escalate quickly, throwing swarms of bizarre enemies at the player, ranging from demonic creatures to twisted mechanical abominations. Weapons feel impactful, and switching between them on the fly becomes essential as enemy behavior and attack patterns vary widely. While the controls are generally responsive, the challenge level can spike unexpectedly, pushing players to learn enemy patterns and manage resources carefully rather than relying on brute force alone. Exploration plays a major role in shaping the experience. The Town of Machine is not strictly linear, and players are encouraged to wander, revisit earlier areas, and uncover optional locations and side objectives. This non-linear structure adds depth and a sense of place, making the town feel like a cohesive, lived-in environment despite its desolation. However, the lack of clear guidance or quest markers can sometimes lead to confusion, especially when progression depends on locating specific items or triggering obscure events. For some players, this reinforces the game’s sense of mystery; for others, it may result in frustration and aimless backtracking. Visually, the game stands out through its distinctive art direction. Stylized 3D environments are paired with pixel-art characters and enemies, creating a striking contrast that enhances the game’s otherworldly atmosphere. Rusted machinery, distorted architecture, and unnatural color palettes give each area a unique identity while maintaining a consistent tone of decay and unease. Sound design further strengthens immersion, with ambient audio, industrial noise, and ominous music underscoring both exploration and combat. Though the game is clearly made on a modest budget, its cohesive aesthetic helps mask technical limitations and gives it a strong visual personality. Despite its creativity, Town of Machine shows signs of rough edges. Certain systems feel underexplained, and pacing can be uneven, with long stretches of exploration occasionally interrupted by abrupt difficulty spikes. Some narrative threads feel unresolved, and the ending may leave players with more questions than answers. While this ambiguity aligns with the game’s themes, it can also give the impression that some ideas were not fully realized or refined. Occasional technical hiccups and design inconsistencies further contribute to the sense that the game is more ambitious than polished. Overall, Town of Machine is a bold and atmospheric indie title that succeeds through mood, worldbuilding, and intensity rather than refinement. It offers a distinctive blend of action, horror, and mystery that will appeal to players who enjoy exploring strange worlds and piecing together fragmented narratives. While its lack of clarity and uneven pacing may deter those seeking a more streamlined experience, players willing to embrace its imperfections will find a haunting and memorable journey through a world where machines, spirits, and human ambition have merged into something deeply unnatural.
Barely Thumb's Up
It's good and I enjoyed that there wasn't too much "hand holding". You'll actually have to conserve ammo, make your own notes, and keep track of what's next because the game is merciless in these areas. Yes, it is entirely possible to make it to the final boss and be soft locked due to insufficient ammo. This game will let you get all the way to the end and still fail through very little fault on the player's part. A good game gives the player a complete overload of ammo before the major fight, not here, you're given maybe a 10% boost on your existing ammo - good luck! All in all, a nice tight game but some huge flaws. I don't get why the dev would let you run out of ammo, it makes no sense because you can't even go back to an old save. Player beware! Also the map is utterly useless. Most of the time it's "map unavailable" and the times you do have access to it, you're already in a tiny are that doesn't need a map. It's unclear what your goals are because they aren't tracked anywhere... it's up to YOU to literally take notes any time you bump into something you can't get past, or when you dialogue with NPCs and they drop key information. All in all it's a 6/10 game that could be maybe an 8 with some QoL from the dev but it's clear this game will never get another update. Actually skip it unless you're overwhelmed with delight from reading the other positive reviews. I would have been just fine missing this one, really.
