A fifty dollar, full-price fairly basic mahjong client with absolutely no one playing it online when you could just as easily get a much more viable functioning client for zero dollars and do so much more with it (Mahjong Soul and Riichi City are two examples on Steam) is a no-brainer. Find another client and don't waste your time with this one. If you are a Touhou addict with infinite financial stability and money to burn or if you want Touhou-themed and honestly insane antics in your day while playing a Japanese tile game and you have others that you'd like to take for a ride, a rather expensive one if you're not on sale because you'll be either asking people to buy it or buying it yourself...well... The real question at the end of the day is: Do you have friends that play Mahjong to that insane degree? Do you have friends that would be willing to get blown up by upwards of 178 million point scores due to Double Yakuman antics that don't take normal scoring into account? And the player that did that to you was an AI? You could do that. You could start that fire for yourself and everyone in your party for 50 dollars. Per player. So, no, I don't recommend this game...even though I play it on a consistent basis for others and get some hilarious results because of it. I grabbed all my copies on sale and that was 25 bucks at best (currently 30) and have upwards of four other people that have the game so my situation is not normal and even then that was steep to me. If it was priced more effectively, south of 20 dollars consistently, and had an actual player base online (there is 1 playing now as of the writing of this review with a total of single digits in the last 24 hours) where you could just hop in for, honestly, stupid crap, then I might change my mind for a more positive review. It's fun for what it is but not at the price the devs want.

This game doesn't have any accessibility options that are required for someone with visual impairments such as myself. Also instead of creating custom rulesets, you have to scroll through 50 game mode sin a single direction, and unfortunately map and music are tied to gamemodes which sucks...
Look what did they do to my girl Patchouli...
Kinda expensive for what it is. The UI looks really cheap, extremely limited options menu, and the game keeps showing controller input even when playing with mouse and keyboard, which I find really distracting. The adventure mode is an interesting concept, so I might keep playing for it and see how that goes. Touhou Unreal Mahjong Revision 2 had a lot more charm in my opinion, this version just feels like a downgrade. Also, I miss being able to select the BGM tracks freely. Needing to activate all of them one by one for each room is atrocious.
Recommended as this is an overall quality product, but wariness is advised as even at half price it costs a premium compared to even paid competitors. I'm not interested in the campaign, I don't have fellow masochists to play with, and I'm not a Touhou fan, so my perspective is purely from the experience playing the AI. That considered, I will list about everything I like/dislike below + The most pad friendly mahjong game I have experience with, feeling slightly better than Yakuza. Every button feels well-mapped, and the board can even be zoomed into with the right analog stick (though this probably wouldn't be needed if the tiles were slightly less pixelated for toimen). Has a nice toggle that allows pressing RB/R1 to discard the latest draw instead of having to move the cursor all the time if looking to discard further away from the right + Dora tiles are a comforting urine yellow. Feels comforting to collect and - more importantly - satisfying to toss aside when it splashes onto the board + Aesthetically very appealing, with over 100+ characters to choose from with overall nice, varied art and over 2 dozen boards. The music is varied and well-made, but the default board is the only one with unaltered rules so it will unfortunately only cycle through the same 3 (quality) tracks if playing on it + Easy to read, with a common lightly angled board that shows all information at a glance with the discard pool being arranged in standard rows of 6. This is only noted because Yakuza's discard pool is a hard-to-read very long 1-2 rows and Kemono Mahjong's steeply angled camera tries to assault my myopia in virtual form +/- Tile discards are a nice gentle thud instead of a hard clack (a + for patricians) +/- Rounds start with 30000 points. Popular, active mahjong clients mostly start with 25000 as far as I know +/- When rounds come to a draw, such as with kyuushu kyuuhai, it moves to the next wind's dealership instead of repeating the round. Seems biased to happening most during my own dealership! +/- The prompt for calling Tsumo is translated to Win. I personally really like this, as with how bad the AI is it's satisfying to press the Win button when you finally see it +/- Emphasizes learning to defend at the drop of a hat due to the AI's bizarrely fast and high value hands - Extremely poor AI that cheats with fast and often high value hands. The worst part is that the AI doesn't understand the concept of ippatsu, suji tiles, or risk/reward so will make very unrealistic live discards post-riichi. This may play into the feeling that the AI cheats when it's just pursuing the most efficient hand no matter what, but regardless once the riichi stick gets thrown expect to see a haneman pulled from the heavens more often than not - The stats aren't very useful to look at, as even though the AI cheats heavily, its fundamentals are so bad that it's easy to regularly get 2nd observing each round's circus at a distance or risking it with bad wait riichis that the AI will deal into because it simply doesn't care (much like many of my opponents ruining my games with bad wait ippatsu tsumos!) - Hard to find enough value at even half price (17 USD) for the average player. It somehow fulfills my needs the best of all options, but if Kemono Mahjong's angled vertical view didn't annoy me so much I'd probably play that instead as it's a well-made product with decent, varied AI by an attentive developer for a fraction of the price (5 USD)
