A really good platformer. With its nice unique style, elaborate levels and easy controls for that cute robot. A lot about the platformer is not to write, but I liked the game a lot)
I liked the game, I completed it in an hour. It is not easy, but interesting and offers a variety of gameplay with challenges. It's better to play on a gamepad!
“Prepare to be frustrated.” If someone had told me this before I played “To the Basement,” or if the store description mentioned how difficult the game becomes, I might not be so angry. But after completing the entire game, I wish I had never played it. I want to like this game. I think the character designs are fun, the art style is attractive, and there’s a neat attempt at a story. The movement is tight and the premise of being able to walk on walls and ceilings is always fun. But this game is not VVVVVV (which only costs $3 more at the time of this review). The problems begin with every single movement ability draining energy (health). You start with a hundred energy, but getting hit, walking on the ceiling, summoning a jump spring, or even double jumping drains that energy. This lends the combined pressure of a timer and a health bar, requiring the player to perform perfectly, as quickly as possible, or you will either die or be locked out of proceeding. These constant restarts wouldn’t be so much of a problem if the game had generous checkpoints. In the hardest platformers, you restart at the beginning of every room, but in “To the Basement,” checkpoints can be five or six rooms apart. This is a huge issue when you narrowly clear room four, but don’t have enough energy to activate the invisible platforms in room five, and still haven’t seen the next checkpoint. There’s also a lack of content in the game, which is surprising considering the entire run time is less than two hours. I saw the same falling rocks used in a mid-boss room, both scrolling sections, and two out of three bosses. The last boss used three attacks across two forms. If the checkpoints hadn’t been so sparse, it would have been a one-hour game. If you want to see my first impressions playthrough and hear more of my thoughts, visit: https://youtu.be/te-mnzEjDLg
Short platformer with good mechanics and pixel visuals that can be completed in around an hour. In this platformer, you play as a robot who wakes up in the trash. It knows nothing, yet it quicky decides to assist people after learning that they sought refuge in the basement after robots began attacking them. The robot's primary ability is to walk on ceilings and walls. While ceilings and low walls do not present any problems, high walls cause it to slide down. This means you can't cheat by climbing up any wall you see. Later on, you get the power to see invisible things and drop a spring, allowing you to reach higher places. The use of all abilities is tied to robot’s energy levels. When you activate an ability, you lose energy. The only way to replenish it is to grab energy power-ups or save at a savings station. Because energy is also your health, you cannot afford to get hit. Each stage is made up of multiple screens. There is no exploration, so you can only move right and cannot return to the previous screen. Each screen is a short platforming challenge in which you use your powers to go to the other side and occasionally save humans, who grant you a key to unlock doors. Energy management is critical because you only have a limited amount of time to complete a stage. Hanging from the ceiling for too long or utilizing too many springs may prevent you from solving the final room. In this circumstance, you have two options: self-destruct or fling yourself into a hole. The game consists of five acts, each with a different threat. You'll have to avoid spikes, enemy flying robots, electricity, and other hazards. There are bosses, but they die after a single hit. Despite the game's limited color pallet, the acts manage to create unique looks. Achievements are easy and can be earned during a normal playthrough. The only tricky part is the secret ending, but even that can be found very quickly.
Great music, nice minimalistic pixel art. But, the platforming is a bit too tough for me. It seems to me that the game is playing a bit faster than the trailers, and I suppose that's part of it. The constant energy drain isn't the worst thing in the world, but it certainly doesn't help the appealing factor to it. And, really.. Watching the trailer a bit more, and watching some other folks play this on YouTube - the weird speediness I had certainly seems like a bug of some sort. I think normally I might give this a "no" recommendation because the game I'm trying to play versus the game I've been shown simply don't match up. But, the music is catchy and I liked it.
I had an amazing experience at The Basement! The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. The food was delicious, with a great variety of options to choose from. The drinks were also top-notch, with a creative cocktail menu that impressed me. I definitely recommend checking out The Basement for a fun night out with friends or a special date night. Can't wait to come back!
I love pixel styled platformers with minimalistic graphics. The gameplay is kinda easy but you need to concentrate to complete all those levels. And that black-and-white + red vibe is so atmospheric. Good game for evening.
