If you're looking for a simple game with some challenging platforming and fresh mechanics, it is definitely the main appeal here. I was pretty satisfied. Gameplay spices up quite quickly -- the second ability you get is given early, and is one of the the biggest appeals for me. Forget wall jumps to scale up walls, you get to stick your scissors into walls, and using that to climb high or make cool jumps. Its implemented quite smoothly too. The Nail/Pin in the first section is also a cool concept. Secrets challenged my thinking and prowess of my moveset. There's also room for different solutions to one challenge. The way the level design teaches you early on is well done (ex, finding secrets, dashes, etc.) There were some rough moments in the middle of the game that confused me about where to go however. I would've loved an extra hint or so when getting to the later sections. The atmosphere of the game is dark and mysterious which I love. The music is pretty good at enhancing that in the early game. However in the middle of the game (not the end), I think it the energy of the music clashed a bit thematically with the objective. Overall a great platformer with some very interesting mechanics that make it quite fresh. The lore also provides a great story that I was invested in.
The controller did not work for me. Not using a KB for a platformer. Never got past the landing zone as I could not move or interact.
The mood of the game is very wholesome. I love the soundtrack and the game mechanics. The game itself is using very interesting concept of jumping on your weapon. This leads to creative interactions of player's game-play. I haven't got to the ending yet but definitely recommended. Shops and upgrades are interesting as well. The whole game is very well developed. One improvement could be, because it is an open world sandbox game, a player could spend lots of time moving around and stuck for hours. A more detailed map or teleportation portals could be very useful for future updates.
This game has a great atmosphere and style to it. Enjoying it so far, the controls take a bit of time to master but once you get the hang of things you really get to explore around the game. Really hopeful and looking forward to controller and Steam Deck support if and when it shows up in the future! Recommend giving this one a try!
I went through three phases while playing this game. The first phase was when I was pleasantly surprised by how good the game was and happy with the exploration and novel mechanics in the game. With a buttery smooth perfornance, secrets all over the place, it seemed nothing could go wrong. The second phase was when the game started to wear out its welcome, mainly because of how ridiculously easy the combat it. The game is just constantly throwing health potions at you so you'll never die. This also has the effect of making many of the charms useless which in turn makes the money useless, which in turn makes the secrets gradually less and less interesting. Then the third phase. The third phase begins immediately after you get double jump. You will then discover why you were given so many health potions. The game is comparable to aeterna noctis from this point onwards. This game is recommended for all fans of aeterna noctis.
A hidden gem. The game has a great pace and flows to it. You always feel smart when you find the solution to a tricky area. Mastering the mechanics of the game takes time, but is incredibly satisfying once you nail it down. Give this game a shot.
This would be a neutral rec if there was an option. It’s VERY short. On the one hand its got some originality to it. Ugly, common, basic visual style. Music does nothing for me. The controls are good, but some of the level design can be pretty annoying. There are no bosses in the game. This game is all about platforming. I have a love/hate relationship with the platforming. It can be a little tricky in places, sometimes for the right reasons, other times for the wrong reasons (at least in my opinion). For instance: A series of platforms where its very easy to bump your head trying to jump across each one of them. Things like that which are moreso unpleasant than they are impressive. I found the thorn barriers in the game to be very annoyingly restrictive. There's a couple of screens where you can hit a switch to toggle which thorn barriers are active in the world. This makes navigating confusing unless you are making some seriously aggressive use of the rather basic looking map pins. I found this to be very frustrating, I like to see clearly where I can and can't go on the map. Supposedly there is an ability later in the game that can destroy these barriers if you make it that far in this maze of confusion. There are plenty of treasures to return for when you get new abilities. With a bit more patience than I had, you might have a good time with this.
as the composer, i really like the music :P for real tho, Mathew made an incredible game and its definitely worth checking out!
Only half an hour into this game and it is super fun and so beautiful! As a huge metroidvania fan this game has been very intuitive, well designed and also challenging at times. Highly recommend picking it up and I can't wait to play more!
A cute little game that is small in scope but densely packed with fun platforming and a polished presentation!
The unique mechanics quickly build up into a broad suite of movement options, and levels provide platforming challenges that challenge your precision and timing, and sometimes play like mini puzzles. The game is difficult in places, but is seldom frustrating. The hardest sections are rarely mandatory, and there are many rewards for skilled jumpers and meticulous explorers. The music, sounds, and visuals are overall quite polished, which makes exploration fun. There are also tons of secret nooks and crannies to find, most rooms have one or more! The game does a great job of pacing out new abilities, as you always get a new fun toy once you've mastered the previous one. Combat is simple, with enemies serving as platforming obstacles more than opponents. The world-level puzzles can be a bit annoying when backtracking, but that was partially my fault
I forgot to get the charge attack, it's in the bottom left of the map.
My first play-through took 3.5 hours from start to finish. I took the time to get every ability and find some of the secrets, but I left a few of the hardest challenges unfinished, as well as the post-game section. Thread is a solid and innovative platformer. Short and sweet, with plenty of attention to detail and a mechanical depth that rewards mastery.
