It's exactly what I expected in a game when I purchased a "slavjank" bundle. This wasn't too bad. It's nowhere near a good or polished game, but I did have quite a bit of fun with it. The save system isn't the best and you'll want to manual save frequently in case you die to something odd. Otherwise you'll have to restart the entire level. Damage is all over the place. The final boss hits you with pins and needles, while some of the regular enemies you encounter hit you for about 20% of your health per hit.
They're Alive! is an eccentric and deeply unconventional first-person shooter that feels less like a product designed for broad appeal and more like a snapshot of a very specific creative moment. Developed by Orion Games and published by Strategy First, the title blends low-budget shooter mechanics with heavy-handed satire, science-fiction paranoia, and an unmistakably Eastern European sense of humor. Originally released in 2009 and later resurfacing on Steam, the game carries all the hallmarks of its era: experimental ideas, rough execution, and a willingness to be strange even when that strangeness undermines cohesion. The premise drops players into the role of an ordinary engineer who moves to Moscow in search of opportunity, only to become entangled in a surreal conspiracy involving aliens secretly controlling humanity. This setup quickly establishes the game’s defining tone—bleak, absurd, and conspiratorial—where mundane urban environments collide with outlandish sci-fi concepts. A signature mechanic involves special glasses that allow the protagonist to see hidden truths, revealing enemies, secret messages, or concealed pathways that are otherwise invisible. While this idea has clear thematic potential, its implementation is inconsistent, often feeling more symbolic than mechanically essential, as the game rarely builds meaningful challenges around its use. Moment-to-moment gameplay follows a straightforward, linear shooter structure. Levels funnel the player through cramped interiors and bleak cityscapes filled with hostile enemies, broken up by scripted sequences and occasional environmental interactions. Combat is simple and frequently unrefined, relying on a mix of melee weapons and firearms that lack satisfying weight or balance. Encounters tend to feel chaotic rather than tactical, with enemy AI behaving erratically or predictably, offering little in the way of strategic depth. Rather than testing player skill, many firefights feel like exercises in endurance, emphasizing persistence over precision. Weapon variety adds a layer of novelty, if not polish. The arsenal includes both conventional firearms and improvised tools that reinforce the game’s grimy, offbeat tone. Unfortunately, this variety rarely translates into meaningful choice, as differences between weapons are often minimal or poorly communicated. Feedback from shooting, hit detection, and enemy reactions feels inconsistent, contributing to a sense that combat systems were assembled more out of necessity than refined through iteration. As a result, the act of shooting—normally the core pleasure of an FPS—becomes one of the game’s weakest elements. Narrative and tone are where They’re Alive! most clearly sets itself apart, though not always to its benefit. The game leans heavily into satire, conspiracy tropes, and social commentary, blending dark humor with exaggerated caricatures of authority and everyday life. Dialogue and story beats swing wildly between grim seriousness and absurdity, often without clear transitions. For some players, this dissonance creates a unique, cult-like charm, making the game feel like an interactive fever dream. For others, it comes across as incoherent or unintentionally comedic, with awkward writing and uneven localization undermining any deeper thematic impact. Technically, the game shows its age in nearly every aspect. Visuals are dated, animations are stiff, and environments lack detail, even by the standards of late-2000s shooters. Performance on modern systems can be inconsistent, sometimes requiring manual tweaks to achieve stability. These technical limitations compound the already clumsy mechanics, making the experience feel more like a preserved artifact than a game smoothly adapted for contemporary play. The audio design fares little better, with serviceable but unremarkable sound effects and voice work that often struggles to convey tone effectively. Player reception reflects this uneven package. Some approach They’re Alive! as a cult curiosity, appreciating its unapologetic weirdness and willingness to embrace ideas far outside mainstream shooter conventions. Others find it frustrating, dated, and lacking the basic mechanical polish expected even of modest indie titles. Its mixed reputation is well-earned, as enjoyment depends heavily on tolerance for rough edges and interest in obscure, experimental games rather than conventional quality benchmarks. Ultimately, They’re Alive! is less a recommendation in the traditional sense and more an invitation to explore a peculiar corner of gaming history. It stands as an example of ambition exceeding execution, where bold ideas and satirical intent are hampered by technical and mechanical shortcomings. For players fascinated by forgotten shooters, cult oddities, or games that feel almost alien in their design sensibilities, it can offer a strange and memorable experience. For most others, it remains a reminder that originality alone is not always enough to sustain engaging gameplay, especially when the foundations beneath it are so unstable. Rating: 5/10
